FF League Schedule starts after NFL season? (1 Viewer)

We normally hold our player auction Labor Day weekend, before the season starts. This year, due to various life events, we are unable to do that. We are considering holding it the Saturday of week 1. Of course, that would be after the opening NFL game.

Does anybody have experience doing it this way?

How do you handle players drafted and that have already played a game as far as starting lineups for week 1?

TIA

My league is in the same boat this year. Several guys have balked at it because it's against the norm, but therelikely isn't any way around it.

As far as scoring, I think the fact that a game has already been played is irrelevant. If Peyton throws for 350 and 3 TDs and Flacco blows out his knee on the first play of the game every owner has the same advantage/disadvantge (pick number aside).

Why not skip week 1 of the FF season? Shorten the season by a week. Or, have your championship game week 17 instead of 16.

You can't do a slow email draft and start now or even in a week or even the first of August?
We do an auction. Could do a slow auction but one of the best parts of the ff experience is getting together and talking smack at the draft/auction.

Another option is week 2 of the pre-season but wanted to hear from those with experience having drafts the first weekend of the NFL season.

Ya I have done a slow auction before. They suck compared to the regular

The FFPC Main Event has for years held all our drafts after NFL's opening game (usually on Thursday) and its worked out perfectly. Owners are able to draft the NFL players from Thursday's game and then have the ability to insert them into their Week 1 starting lineup, or keep them on the bench if they want. This actually adds tremendous strategy into the drafts. Remember Kevin Ogletree's 30-point game against the Giants in 2012? He was at the bottom of most cheatsheets before that game but ended up being drafted as high as the 6th round after his performance.

I'm sure you can handle your draft the same way and I guarantee your league will love it as FFPC owners do.

We've drafted on that day the last two seasons. Here is how we handle players that played in the Thursday Night game:

Any player drafted as a starter will be automatically placed into your week one line-up no matter how he performed in that game.

For this purpose a starter will be defined as:

1. The first QB that a team drafts;
2. Either of the first two RBs that a team drafts;
3. Either of the first two WRs that a team drafts;
4. The first TE that a team drafts;
5. The FLEX starter will be the first drafted out of a team's third RB, third WR or second TE;
6. The first K and D/ST that a team drafts.

An exception will be made for a player that misses the Week 1 game, so long as it was known in advance that that player was going to sit out (i.e. If Hakeem Nicks' injury causes him to miss Week 1, he can be benched even if he was drafted as a starter.)
This is done so as to not give anyone the benefit of hindsight. Say you draft Peyton Manning as your starting QB, would you really have benched him during Week 1? So if he has a bad opening game, you'd still have to start him.

ETA: Last year this caused Kevin Ogletree to be drafted much earlier than he would have since he scored 3 TDs in Week 1. Adds a little different twist and now we kind of have grown accustomed to this wrinkle and are drafting on that date again this year.

Thanks everybody for your input. This is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. Doesn't sound like it will be a problem at all.

I think it could actually be fun. How much do you reach for a guy that went off week 1? (Assuming you allow teams to start the players from the Thursday game.) Especially, imagine if a very late round pick puts up 30 points. He could go several rounds ahead of his ADP, making things interesting.

That actually happened last season with Ogletree, as pointed out. I beleive he went in round 5 or 6 of our draft, when it was likely he would have gone undrafted otherwise. It wasn't a bad gamble as he at the very least would give the team that drafted him a nice advantage in their Week 1 matchup.
