One of my all time favorites. Love Clint's transformation after he hits the whiskey again. Also, I’d put Unforgiven up against any other movie we have covered so far. It’s in the GF2, Chinatown territory.

So many of the most badass quotesOne of my all time favorites. Love Clint's transformation after he hits the whiskey again.
We were talking about quotable movies earlier - this is #1 for me.So many of the most badass quotes
Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a #####! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.
Brian Singer was taking notes, eh?Will Munny: All right, I'm coming out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any sum##### takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife, all his friends, and burn his damn house down.
I will finally watch Army of Darkness and holy #### our lists might be similar well other than #1 which for me will be a newspaper boy movie starring Batman. With a fair bit of Tarantino dislike around these parts, I figured Glengarry would be in the mix, along with other stuff like Unforgiven, A Few Good Men, My Cousin Vinny.
Army of Darkness better be getting high points.
After actually looking at the 92 movies, I may have to retract this - there are a ton of good to great movies to give points to.Gr00vus said:It'll be getting the full 30 from me. Buckle up boneheads.

I do think his '92 movie is one of his 3 best though (I don't have PF in there) and still love that movie. Then he started hanging out too much with Rodriguez and got into the over the top Grindhouse silliness.I like Tarantino’s movies but I think he is overrated. Maybe it’s the fanboys he attracts or how repulsive I find him but I just never got the insane love for his work. It’s all good but a lot of it borders on too much pastiche.
Also, I’d put Unforgiven up against any other movie we have covered so far. It’s in the GF2, Chinatown territory.
As far as major filmmakers go, he is one of the better ones for sure. However, he is the opposite of original. That isn't an insult, it's just an acknowledgment of what he is trying to do: remake film and film genres that he loves.Definitely not a fanboy but Tarantino is one the few artists in film today.
At a minimum his films are original and unique which is more than I can say for 95% of films released.
Yeah... he's a living homage-maker- so unique or original probably not the right description. but he's really good at it, and I think finds interesting ways of combining them.As far as major filmmakers go, he is one of the better ones for sure. The Prometheus of the Fanboy - made his men from the clay of every revenge fantasy, catch-phrase & empowerment scenario he collected at the video store like ballcards. And then King of the Nerds was he.....As far as major filmmakers go, he is one of the better ones for sure. However, he is the opposite of original. For sure, and I was just coming in to post something similar. He writes fantastic dialogue and has talent behind the camera, but basically he is a movie geek that is regurgitating all the types of movies he loves and doesn't think gets widespread love. The Kill Bill movies are probably the best example of that - it's basically a mishmash of about 10 genres and directors he loves jammed into one movie. Spaghetti westerns, kung fu movies, DePalma nods, anime, on and on... I still like most of his movies, but he is a director that has taken hits and been knocked down my rankings as I watch more and more movies and see just how much he is mimicking. IMO another negative with him is that I am not 100% sure what it a Tarantino movie. Because he apes so much, he lacks something that gives his movies a signature that is his own (well, besides the overuse of the N-word and a foot fetish I guess?).As far as major filmmakers go, he is one of the better ones for sure. However, he is the opposite of original. That isn't an insult, it's just an acknowledgment of what he is trying to do: remake film and film genres that he loves.
Not disagreeing, but you do realize that attaching classic rank to anything you first saw @ age 11 carries some baggage, right?I was going to do some poll research for this one or next, but as I was scrolling through after some baseball last night I saw I'm Gonna Git You Sucka was on, so I couldn't NOT watch that. Now that movie is a comedy classic...
Hey, I was 16 or so when I first saw it.Not disagreeing, but you do realize that attaching classic rank to anything you first saw @ age 11 carries some baggage, right?
Mostly because of my In Living Color obsession in HS.
Nobody in here saw the same movie at the same age, under the same circumstances, and with the same life experiences. I saw lots of these movies when I was a kid or teen and I will rate them based on my impressions from then. However, I don’t think I’d put a movie I’ve only seen as a kid into my all time classic or eve great category without a rewatch.Think we'll see something similar to that phenomenon w Bill & Ted here in '89. Whoa!
Right. There is absolutely no anointing of subpar movies by people who were babysat by the VCR. Check. Ooh, that's right - my gen goes just as nuts for Gidget & Jerry LewisEvery opinion we have in here about a movie comes with baggage and needs context.Nobody in here saw the same movie at the same age, under the same circumstances, and with the same life experiences.
On Amazon Prime right nowI was going to do some poll research for this one or next, but as I was scrolling through after some baseball last night I saw I'm Gonna Git You Sucka was on, so I couldn't NOT watch that. Now that movie is a comedy classic...

Didn't mean to confuse. I have it as an '88 movie.Ruling? Limited release December 14th '88 ...wide release January 11th '89.
Will definitely be on mine if qualifies.
Yep, I have been trying to be fair with my re-watches. Maybe some I am too stubborn about and will still get decent marks, but I have been surprised at some not holding up the best on re-watches.I saw lots of these movies when I was a kid or teen and I will rate them based on my impressions from then. Rwatched The Killer this weekend. It didn't hold up as well as I had hoped. It's been aped by every freaking 90s action movie to the point where it seems like a parody of itself. It is surprisng sometimes what will last what and what won't.KarmaPolice said:Yep, I have been trying to be fair with my re-watches. IMO 80s movies that do hold up: Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Karate Kid
ones that I have watched that didn't hold up as well: E.T., Sixteen Candles,
ones that maybe don't hold up, but don't care and I still love them: Revenge of the Nerds, Bill and Ted.

I gave in and watched Driving Miss Daisy this weekend. Had the same kind of feeling where I went with low expectations, but it exceeded those at least. Agree on Tandy and Freeman, but nothing really memorable about the story though. Probably on the cusp, but I’m not sure if I will give it points.Watched Driving Miss Daisy last night. I had low expectations but it was pretty good. I’ll give it points. There are some flaws: it’s predictable and Dan Akroyd was totally miscast. However, Tandy and Freeman are so freaking good that it overcomes everything else.
Right?!Major League - I will admit that I don't laugh at loud nearly as much as I did when I was younger, but for the most part I laugh myself silly. And the quotes back and forth between the guys never get old. "How's your wife and my kids," is still literally the only way one friend and I greet each other, and it's funny every single time.
Caddyshack I can recite from memory right now and probably be about 85% dead on. And yes I still laugh at every single scene in one way or the other. And of course, the quotes are endless on the golf course.
Christmas Vacation - is not only all of that, it's my favorite Christmas movie, a standard of family get togethers for us, and most everyone in the family, including the wives, know this movie and the scenes when we reference it. And some of the scenes still make me laugh until it hurts. Frankly it's gotten funnier as I've gotten older as I've become Clark in some ways for Christmas with the lights and the big tree and the unwanted guests..... it's rings true and funny now, when it was just outlandish and funny then.
Love Bill & Ted. Made my list. Haven't seen it in a very very long time. Still pronounce Socrates like they do in the movie, and even did it in law school.
The Burbs was never my favorite. Didn't make my list. But I don't begrudge people that love it.
Three Amigos was hysterical. Love that movie. Quote it every time we are in Disney and we are on the Three Caballeros ride. I think - think - the wife still enjoys it. Think.
Ghostbusters is a top 10 all time movie for me.
Airplane! is silly funny still to this day, though probably not nearly as much as it was when I was younger. I still like stupid comedy, but some of the bits don't hit. HAving said, that, "you ever been to a Turkish, prison? / do you like gladiator movies?" are still lines that me and the guys will throw out there at really badly timed moments.
And then Animal House. I don't know if I have ever met someone that didn't like Animal House. I don't know how to process that.
Woo imitated himself as much as any Western director did.Rwatched The Killer this weekend. It didn't hold up as well as I had hoped. It's been aped by every freaking 90s action movie to the point where it seems like a parody of itself. It is surprisng sometimes what will last what and what won't.
I will fight you.it's ok ... but, like "Caddyshack", it just hasn't held up ... i give it a resounding MEH![]()
I would disagree. I think it is the deepest year that we have done so far.this year feels very top heavy
Type [ spoiler ] before what you want spoiled, but don't leave any spaces between word spoiler and the brackets. If want to add non-spoiler stuff after, close it out the same way but with /spoiler surrounded by the brackets... Otherwise you don't need the end spoilerhow do I do a spoiler?
Thanks, I feel dumb. I should have just assumed that it was BBcode.Type [ spoiler ] before what you want spoiled, but don't leave any spaces between word spoiler and the brackets. Absolutely he did so he is as much to blame for the watering down of his style. It is pretty amazing watching The Killer now and then looking at 90s action movies like The Matrix. It's very clear Woo set the style for a decade worth action sequences: 2 guns, no reloading, liberal use or slow motion, lots of cuts...someone called it bullett ballet.Woo imitated himself as much as any Western director did.
Video games have beaten Woo's style to death as wellAbsolutely he did so he is as much to blame for the watering down of his style. Great call. I remember some game call Max Payne- it was 100% John Woo.Video games have beaten Woo's style to death as well
Right?!
One of legendary comedies. And I agree with all of your post to a tee.
