I think that's the case for a lot of the comedies we're talking about. I personally don't think Christmas Vacation or Bill and Ted's are particularly funny overall. They have a scene or two, but that's about it for me. Major League has a lot more moments, but you have to kind of like the mythologies and stereotypes of baseball in the first place to really enjoy a lot of the humor. If Bob Eucker being Bob Eucker isn't funny for you, then the movie overall isn't going to be funny for you.Great scenes, but I don't think it's great all the way through.
Uncle Buck is more character study as comedy than broad humor. It's another Hughes adult comedy in the same vein as Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Not quite as good, but still worth a watch.
I did see SL&V a bit later than when it came out, which I think helped. In 1989 I was too innocent to have appreciated it. Maybe.
