FFA Movie Poll - 2010 it's countdown Monday! (1 Viewer)

@Ilov80s - was it you that posted that site where you can look up a movie and it tells you what streaming services a movie is available through?  If we can get that again from you or whoever posted it, that would be a good link to have in the OP of these threads.
Krista posted it. Letterbox is also a great site for movie nerds.

As I’m kind of evaluating some of the new movies I’m seeing, it made me think:

What is the newest movie you’ve seen that you would consider “an all time favorite/classic/ 5 stars”?

This is a great question.  Going to think on it.

THAT is a hard question.   As has been suggested, it's hard to stack newer movies vs. old movies because the conditions they were made under are different and they have decades of repeat viewings head start on the newer movies.   Some that came to mind:

Drama/Award winners: Her, There Will Be Blood

Horror:  Let the Right One In, The Orphanage, Get Out

Documentary: The Act of Killing, Stories We Tell

Foreign has too many to narrow down.

As far as what might be studied/talked about in classes in a decade or so, maybe Tree of Life and Boyhood are on there too?

Any of these that you can get information from without signing up?
Letterbox- yes, but it doesn't really help you find the movie IMO. It's more for making movie lists, posting ratings, sorting movies by year/genre/rating

I think you might need to make a free account with Reelgood so you can set which channels, streaming options you have. That way it allows you look for movies that are available on the services you have access to.

The Lives of Others is right up there for me... But already a while ago IIRC

Boyhood was the first thing that popped into my mind.  But you mentioned Get Out in another post, and I would put that on my list already.

I've been using Reelgood without an account.

This was the first one that came to mind for me but I don't watch enough movies

Well, I THINK I am done with my 2010 research unless somebody brings up another movie that sounds good.

I watched The Illusionist and thought it was damn good.  I loved Triplets of Belleville and honestly didn't know that director did another movie after that until I looked it up when krista suggested it.  I wanted to get to Elite Squad, but the library just has one DVD copy in the system, and it was jacked up when I got it.

I have a huge pile for the next 2 years.  I saw all the Karate Kid and BttF sequels back in the day, but my pile includes: When Harry Met Sally, Uncle Buck, Do the Right Thing, Heathers, Glory, Born on the 4th of July, and Lean on Me.

I am watching Incendies right now, good recommendation.

Do you even movie, bro?

I'm watching Tucker & Dale right now.  Have Incendies open in a tab for another day soon, too.

:lmao:

I'm glad you liked The Illusionist, KP.  It's not for everyone.  I should have mentioned it was the same guy who did The Triplets of Belleville - loved that movie, too!

I've seen 2 of them, but was 14 at the time so most of what i have seen from the year are cheesy action and comedy movies, which looks to be about 80% of movies from that year anyway.

How you liking Tucker and Dale?   "We have your friend!"

You might have mentioned that about the director of The Illusionist as well.

Overall enjoying it a lot, but a slightly mixed bag for me.  I have literally laughed out loud, huge laughs, several times.  But it consists of one joke played over and over, which gets tiresome.  Just at the moment I think it's too tiresome, though, something else makes me nearly die from laughter.

I’m a big fan of The Fighter but I also really enjoyed watching Mickey Ward fight. Christian Bale is so good in this movie.
This movie had a lot more to offer than just Bale's performance IMHO.

I thought it was the best casted movie of the year and deserved a lot of ensemble praise.

@TripItUp - you are 100pts short.  Didn't know if that was on purpose or not.

True, but he gave the best performance by quite a bit (although his part had a lot more meat on it than some of the others).

Great call on Let Me In not making the cut.  Honestly it's about as good as your are going to get from a foreign --> American remake of a horror movie, but like you said the original is so good.  In the end it's just an unnecessary movie and I would want people to watch that one over the original if they haven't seen either.
I was just taking a look at this one, mostly because I noticed it was filmed in Albuquerque and Los Alamos (my wife is from ABQ and I've spent time in both of those places).  Horror/vampire-type movies are not generally in my bailiwick, but would knowing/loving the scenery add some value to watching it, or not really?  I'm not sure if it's mostly set indoors/outdoors?

They got a huge soundstage out on the West Mesa now & the state pays beaucoup bux in filmco subsidies to keep it from looking like a boondoggle so it makes money sense to make flicks there even if you dont have Vince Gillgan's fetish for scenic Burque transitions & setpieces.

Yeah, it seems like there is a mixed bag that gets filmed there.  I've done the Breaking Bad tour thing in ABQ; so, enjoy that kind of stuff.  Then there are things like The Avengers that you couldn't tell was filmed there if you didn't know it.

Inside Job was interesting but I had read about most of that by this point. Also it feels more like something made for educational purposes than entertainment - it was really just a series of interview clips and powerpoint graphics. I would say if someone didn't understand what happened with the recession and how the world financial system works, it's worth watching to get educated. As a film, it has little value.

The Big Short is a better movie

Best 2010 scene? Nothing is jumping to mind for me
Woody, Buzz and Co holding hands as they resolutely face tight what they believe is their doom.

Mark Zuckerberg staring longingly at his computer waiting for his friend request to be accepted by Erica.

your face has little value.

Re-watched The Social Network and besides just holding up well as a movie, it actually becomes more interesting after we have seen what Facebook has become.
