FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (7 Viewers)

Revisited a few older movies this weekend, watching with the wife who had not seen these before.  (Will keep these spoiler-free)

Started with Sleepaway Camp.  Was curious if it would keep her interest all the way through and it did, and mine as well.  Few real scares but a fun air and near-perfect 80's cheesiness made it a good watch.  YMMV if you didn't grow up in the 80s or find these movies too cheesy.

Then was Fright Night.  The original.  She got into this more than she expected, though she didn't like the casting of Marcy Darcy as the lead female and didn't buy the antagonist as a captivating presence to women.  Beyond that, had good scares, a good atmosphere, and (for 80's horror) a strong story with diverse, captivating characters.

The last was Wolf.  She had just been talking about never having seen Jack Nicholson as a "good guy" and probably not being able to buy in if he ever tried.  I showed her this and proved her wrong - she was cheering him on the whole way through.  Not a scary movie really but definitely well-acted, fun in its own way, and an overall positive experience.  Much more polished than the other two.

We both agreed all three were good watches.  My favorite was Fright Night while she preferred Wolf.

I think I was in the "all style, no substance" camp on this one.  Remember it being original but feeling mostly men about it.
I agree.  I watched "The VVitch" over the weekend.  Was not impressed with it at all.  Glad I didn't waste my money going to see it in the theaters.

Good question.  I don't know.  Gonna do a search of "good movies with bad sequels" and see what jogs my memory.

Matrix

Speed

Godfather (after part 2)

Blair Witch

Dawn of the Dead

just off the top of my head looking through here.
Going against the grain here big time. But I thoroughly enjoy Day of The Dead a lot more than the coveted Dawn Of The Dead. To me it has aged incredibly well. And Savani's make up and gore work on this is the stuff of legends.

Actually, I also love Day of the Dead.  I should have said that instead.

"Us" does look really creepy indeed. I know it does not fall into the typical "horror" genre but "Glass" looks really great in the previews. Definitely going to see that one. I will need to re-watch Unbreakable and the brilliant Split again before going to see this one.

I'm stoked for "Glass" as well.  I was a big fan of "Unbreakable", but "Split" was kind of meh to me.  The fact that it is tied in to that universe is the single coolest thing about it, which is confirmation to me that the movie wasn't all that.  I kind of expect "Glass" to suck as well because expectations are going to be so high, but I'm glad we're going to get it.  And I also need to go back and see Unbreakable with my gf who hasn't peeped it.

"Fright night. For real!" Loved that movie.

I remember not liking Unbreakable all that much but will have to check it out again. I did really like Split and am looking forward to Glass.

House - The 80's original with the Greatest American Hero, Norm from Cheers and Bull from Night Court. Good scares and some funny moments. Don't remember why it's rated R. Gore maybe? It was the 80's so can't be all that bad.

Curious what you will think of Unbreakable after rewatching.

I remember enjoying the movie the first time around. Just rewatched it last night in preparation for “Glass” and found it incredibly boring this time around.

Hereditary:  Don't bother.  Cast of actors is good.  Story is blah & not scary at all.  What's worse is it is a long show.  You know it's bad when you keep checking your watch.

Watched the Suspiria remake yesterday and it was great.  It's both looooooooong and a slow burn but has a more cohesive plot that the original along with better characters and acting.  It has a couple of really gruesome body horror scenes.  Also the soundtrack is done by Thom Yorke.

It manages to capture the creepy feel of the original , while taking the plot in its own unique direction.  Wish more remakes would be this bold.

Not sure if any of you guys nerd out on podcasts like I do, but I really dig The Faculty of Horror podcast.  They just released their best of 2018 episode and I think Suspiria was one of the first they mentioned.  I always listen to their stuff and get ideas of movies to watch.

Just received "Suspiria", will hopefully report back within a week.

Some recent viewings:

Apostle (available on Netflix): 7.5/10 - I love cult films and this one has a nice little twist. Worth your time

From IMDB: In 1905, a drifter on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with a sinister religious cult on an isolated island.

Primal Rage (VOD): 5/10  ---  Bigfoot wears a mask, uses weapons and hunts people - Not quite as bad as it sounds. If Bigfoot is your thing then check it out.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (available on Netflix): 6/10 -- Hot chicks go to Texas ranch with loser dudes and mayhem ensues. I really loved how this one was shot (sort of like the original TCM), however the kills are average at best and they reveal who the killer is far too soon (though it was pretty easy to figure out)

Watched The Hole in the Ground.....right out the gate it reminded me of the Babadook. Just had the same feel and story. It wasn't bad--just slow, but I liked the twist in the movie.

One Cut of the Dead is extremely low-budget Japanese movie which is doing really well in the Asian markets.  It opens with a 37-minute uncut/one-take Zombie movie and the rest of the movie unpacks it for you.  It is both clever and funny and really well done.

watched The Greasy Strangler (available on Amazon Prime and Kanopy)

to me was like a cross between David Lynch and Tim & Eric. What a weird freakin movie! Here is a bit of trivia from IMDB that may give you some idea as to what type movie this is...All male genitalia seen in this film are prosthetics.

Couple different summaries...

Ronnie runs a Disco walking tour with his son, Brayden. When a sexy woman takes the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her love. It also signals the arrival of an greasy strangler who stalks the streets at night.

When Big Ronnie and his son Brayden meet lone female tourist Janet on Big Ronnie's Disco Walking Tour--the best and only disco walking tour in the city--a fight for Janet's heart erupts between father and son, and the infamous Greasy Strangler is unleashed.

The Orphanage

Finally got around to seeing this one.  I thought the story was pretty good and the suspense was there throughout the movie.  The ending was a little cheesy and formulaic, but it tied everything up nicely.  4.5/5

Is this streaming somewhere? I've been looking for this on the usual apps with no success.

The Nun is on HBO so I tried watching it. I fell asleep half an hour in, pretty boring. I may try to finish it later.

I think I've watched everything good on Amazon, Shudder, and Netflix.  Been a while since something really stood out.  Only one I can think of recently that has been good was Clovehitch Killer.

A friend of mine recommended 2 prime movies recently . Haven't seen either yet.

Devil's Rock

The Night Eats The World

this one is on Shudder and I thought it was pretty good. It is horror-anthology and the stories are interwoven somewhat
