FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (7 Viewers)

Elizabeth Harvest

Not sure where they were going with this movie, but it was interesting up until it wasn’t and then just lingered on. On the other hand, Abbey Lee Kershaw

3/5

Anyone going to see Midsommar over the next week? I'm pretty hyped for this one. Jordan Peele piled on some extremely high praise.

My son and I watched Terrifier on Netflix and man......it was a brutal slasher. The Character that does all the mayhem “Art The Clown” is extremely creepy. The movie was made on a 100K budget. It has what I consider the most brutal kill I have ever seen on film.....jeeeeeez!!!!

For a 100K film...it was well done. It created a sense of dread, had some good music and of course borrowed some atmosphere from the legendary classic “Halloween”. A nice throwback to the great slashers of the 80’s (the good ones of course). This is fast becoming a major cult classic in the genre.

I give it a 3 out of 5 stars grade.

The sequel is filming this Fall. And the director is touting it as 10X’s what the original was.

Enjoyed it very much

Our House

College kid takes care of his brother and sister after their parents die. He’s experimenting with wireless electricity transmission, but is pulling in supernatural forces instead. It was suspenseful and kept me guessing. 4/5

Continuing on with the cheesy 80s horror I somehow missed - I watched Return of the Living Dead on Prime last night.  Full-on 80s experience here:  soundtrack, random naked chicks, ridiculous acting.  I was disappointed that Part 2 wasn't part of Prime.  I THINK based on the preview that was the one that I saw in HS, but I am pretty sure that I never watched this one.

"Send.  More. Paramedics"

Make sure you catch "All Hallows Eve" on Amazon Prime.

I probably should catch up with some decent horror movies at some point, but last night's crappy 80s fare was Slumber Party Massacre.       I am getting sucked in too easily to these campy 80s movies.  I saw that Sleepaway Camp 1 and 2 are streaming too.

Saw the new child’s play. Wasn’t expecting much and it was just about that. They twisted the story a bit and at parts it felt like a horror comedy

It's one hell of a messed up movie.

I don't even know how to rate it. If we're just talking about the craft of moviemaking, or the performances of the actors, then I would be forced to rate it highly.

But I hated this movie.

I'm not an aficionado of the horror genre, so maybe I'm the wrong guy to be giving a review. I can enjoy a well-made horror flick, as long as the director builds suspense and holds my attention. I can usually suspend disbelief regarding the stupid actions of doomed characters. (Because part of the fun of a horror movie is watching a stupid person make a stupid decision that leads to their own demise.)

But this movie..........it's not even a horror movie. It's gore porn. And I don't mean that in the sense that "____ porn" has become a catch phrase to describe fetishized visual depictions of random topics. I mean it in the sense that it is literally "gore" and "porn". The sex scene at the end is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen that involved multiple naked people.

This movie feels like it started out as a G-rated foreign-language travelogue for the arthouse circuit, and then halfway into production they ran out of money and just said, "Eff it, let's go full Cronenberg."

I can't even give it an A for effort because there are plot holes, lazy tropes, and very little effort to build suspense.

:lmao:  Funny review. I get where you are coming from. I did like this more then you did but I would never recommend it or disagree with a review such as yours. Having said  that I did like it. The sex scene you refer to was a WTF is going on here moment. I was really looking at the paintings and runes through this whole movie trying to figure out the clues to where it was going. I was happy I got much of it but I also missed some. It was just a strange movie.

As I left the theater there were a couple employees waiting to come in and clean up. I was kind of chuckling as I walked out and they asked me if the movie was good. I kind of laughed and said I'm not really sure what I just saw. They both laughed and said they are hearing that a lot.

About 1/2 way through the Pet Semetery remake.  I will hopefully get through the rest tonight after work.   The Zelda stuff still freaks me out.  :scared:

Just had the pleasure of seeing a horror double feature in a theater last Thursday night:

The Burning & Sleepaway Camp 2

Same theater is going to show Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter and Nightmare On Elm Street in a few weeks.

LOVED LOVED LOVED  Midsommar, but I do understand how people could hate it. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it. I have listened to the score every single day multiple times... I just can't get enough. I think it was absolutely brilliant in every way.

Finished it up, and it was merely OK.  Yet another unnecessary remake.

IMO a big mistake they made was not spending enough time with the day to day stuff with the family or Judd and make you care about them.  This story is about death and grief, but I didn't feel the connections needed for it to hit home better.

This is one of the reasons I'm so impressed with a good trailer. I think the Pet Semetary remake trailer was outstanding, but from what I've heard about it, the movie licks.

It's a well made trailer, but like most horror trailers, it gives too much away.  A couple of the twists and dodges were in the trailer.

The Forever Midnight horror podcast I recommended to you awhile back did Pet Semetary, and they hated it - particularly the enormous 18 wheeler truck that seems to materialize out of nowhere at 95 mph.

Also, @jdoggydogg - thanks for the reminder to check out that podcast.  I listened to their review of Pet Semetary and IT today and liked them.   A couple others that I have stumbled across in the last few weeks were  Straight Chilling:  Horror Movie Podcast and Dead Meat.    Straight Chilling is a horrible name, but it's a group of guys like your FM recommend.   Scanning through their podcast list, there is a wide variety of horror movies new and old.  (Everything from Friday the 13th 4 to Midsommar).  Dead Meat is a boyfriend/girlfriend duo that also reviews a wide range of movies.  I just like having a female voice for movie reviews, especially with a genre like horror where they are even fewer and farther between.

My guess is that it's a polarizing movie, but I finally got around to watching Hereditary and besides maybe the last 5 mins or so (but still make sense) I thought it was great.  It's been awhile since a movie unsettled and scared me that much.    I knew very little about this, but did get spoiled on something that happened in the first 1/3 of the movie on a podcast recently that I wish I also didn't know.

I didn't see a specific thread for it, but will probably dig more in this thread to see reactions.  Like I said, my guess is it's a movie that critics like more than the general audience - like Babadook, It Follows, The VVitch, etc..

I LOVED LOVED LOVED Hereditary. The acting alone was fantastic.

Not sure why the acting thing is so hard to figure out the acting makes alm difference in these movies.  Maybe not enough good actors want to do the genre (or the budget wont allow it?)

Couple iffy spots with the son, but otherwise I think the acting was great across the board.  Makes the tension ramp up that much more when the actors can sell it.

I thought about this movie most of the day.

Take my review with a huge grain of salt as I’m not the biggest fan of the horror genre (it has good movies, it’s just not the type I gravitate toward):  wife and I watched Hereditary a couple weeks ago and I thought it was pedestrian and mostly just there, nothing special.  We watched The Nun two nights ago and it was a big oof to me.  The wife is a bit upset with me as she is a big fan of the genre and I’m over here panning her suggestions.  She’s trying to convince me to revisit The Ring, but I refuse; that movie scared the piss out of me back when it came out

Did she like Hereditary?

It's all opinion, and horror is about the hardest genre to predict for others.  After skimming through reviews I saw a lot that really didn't like this one and thought it was boring.  It was right in my wheelhouse, so I tense through the whole movie.

She didn’t dislike Hereditary, just doubt it’ll ever get requested for a second viewing.  A somewhat recent entry to this genre, we both loved The Haunting of Hill House.

There was a short film (5-10 minutes max) a few years back with no dialogue showing a lady getting ready for bed and seeing shadowy figure near where lights were just turned off, ended with demon creature in her bed I think.  Pretty certain it won some indie film awards and was eventually used as the premise for a full length film.  Anyone know what I’m thinking of and if the big screen movie turned out good?  The short was pretty scary and well done
