FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (2 Viewers)

Wife and I watched Terrifier and Terrfier 2 back to back nights.

Art The Clown is seriously insane. We enjoyed the heck outta these two movies. And the sequel is better than the original.
I was amazed at how good Terrifier 2 looked after hearing how crazy low the budget was.

My grades on a few horror films I've seen recently in the past month or so:

Bloody Hell - 4/5. Best of the bunch. a guy on the run finds himself in a bad situation with a weird family
The Offering - 3/5. decent movie about a funeral home under a Hasidic Jewish leader's home.
Knock at the Cabin - 3/5. Interesting M. Night Shyamalan flick about a couple and their young daughter visited by odd strangers
Play Dead - 3/5. A girl breaks into a morgue to retrieve something and finds out there are shenanigans going on
The Vigil - 2.5/3. A former Hasidic Jewish man agrees to sit vigil of a corpse for one night. Could have been a lot better IMO
In My Mother's Skin - 2.5/5. Unusual monster/fairy film set in WWII Philippines. I liked the setting, the story was odd to say the least
Artic Void - 2/5. 3 guys making a documentary about the artic take a tourist ship to an island but wake up with everyone missing. Meh.

These are available on Prime, Hulu or Netflix

I watched The Pyramid (on HBO) yesterday. Hadn't seen it since it first came out. It's not good, but if you liked The Descent and As Above, So Below it's similar to those.

Also watched Behind the Mask and Grave Encounters this weekend.

Us (Netflix): Jordan Peele's second movie. Well made on the technical side, good actors, and I wanted to like this... but it fell short of expectations. There were too many times when the bad guys had the good guys cornered and decided to play Bond villain and play with their food rather than kill them... but every time we saw any other bad guy, then went instantly for the kill. Also, the whole plan for the bad guys didn't make sense as far as I could tell.

I'm a bit dull when it comes to seeing deeper meaning in movies, so I didn't notice while watching, but thinking about it the next day, I guess the real point was how much circumstances/family/privilege determines a person's future, where a sewer monster can step in for a cherished little girl, and as long as she looked the same, she could thrive... while the cherished little girl had no chance to succeed when she got dropped in the sewer. Still, none of this made any sense - Real Adelaide just had to walk up to the surface and reclaim her position as soon as she was uncuffed, which appeared to be right away. At that point, she can speak and Fake Adelaide can't, and the follow-up reveals the whole sewer colony.

What was up with the mirrored movements working sometimes but not others? Who did Fake Adelaide's hair as a child so they looked the same? Did it just happen when Real Adelaide's hair was done? Where did Fake Adelaide's clothes come from to mirror Real Adelaide's? Where did the red suits, gloves, and scissors come from? What did the bunnies eat?

Why would Real Adelaide end up with Fake Adelaide's husband's clone? Why would she have kids the same age from the clone father? Did they have sex, or did she just spontaneously become pregnant when Fake Adelaide does? Can the clones have sex with each other and force real people to have kids?

What was the hand holding plan by the red suits on the surface?

Also, what was with the government plot? Control people by... having clones that are so tied to them that their movements would control the surface? I don't think I follow.

The wife didn't love the B&W flick, so last night I tried Saint Maud. It was my turn to dislike the movie, and I really struggled getting through this one. I'd rather watch Nightmare 2 again, at least that made me laugh.
Ugh...that's on my list and I'm kinda wavering on it already.
I also moved Hell House LLC up to tonight in place of As Above, So Below. That one might get the boot eventually after reading some reviews.
Just started this now thanks to y'all.
Nice recommendation, Hell House was good and had some creepy moments. Clowns suck.

The Conference: Swedish slasher film that has potential for some sequels. Imagine, if you will, Michael Scott takes the Dunder Mifflin crew on a team building retreat and while they all hopelessly try to bond Jason from Friday the 13th decides to attend. Hijinx ensue. Some interesting kills to go along with messed up humor. One kill in particular had me cracking up. Its more dark than comedy but a good watch.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe: a 2016 movie I finally came around to and I'm glad I did. A father/son mortician team get an odd case of the chills one stormy night and thing will never be the same. Some creeps to go along with the good bonding make this a perfect weeknight October, lights out watch.

Thinking about it more, I've liked all of Peeles movies less than the masses.
Get Out was fantastic.

Us and Nope were utter crap.

Great acting though….stories sucked.
The top one is where I seem to disagree with people the most. What you posted seems to be near consensus. It's rare I don't see Get Out get the best horror movie that year, or best horror movie of the decade type of praise. I saw it in the theater, I thought it started great but by the end turned into something I didn't click with much. Not bad by any stretch - I'd give it a solid 7.5/10 or so, but not worthy of the near universal praise I see heaped on it.

I really liked this movie too - it builds so slowly and is properly creepy.

I thought Bodies Bodies Bodies was pretty clever. I didn’t love it but the last 1/3 I finally realized it was actually going for comedy and the ending was really good. Might be worth a rewatch now that I get the satire element of it.

Get Out was great. I liked Us way more than most. Did it make sense? Not really but it was very scary imo. Really well made and acted, scary as hell. Nope didn’t do anything for me outside of the monkey scenes.

Yeah it’s way overhyped IMO.

The problem with Get Out (yet I still generally liked it) as that it started out mysterious and tongue-in-cheek but devolved into campiness.

Get Out was good. His other two movies are just flat-out bad.

Also, Get Out isn't really a horror movie and if you go into it with that mindset, you aren't going to like it. It's a dark comedy about race relations, not horror.

I'm not overly concerned with if it's true horror or not. There is enough in it that it qualifies for me.

Imo great movies if the genre are great horror/movies first, and if they can get some social commentary in there to chew on, or it's accidental- even better. For example, people attribute all sorts of commentary to Halloween that Carpenter claims to not have on his mind. To me, Peele leads first with the social commentary, and the movie itself is clunky at the end.

I liked this movie after I saw it more than during it, if that makes any sense. Once it was over, I liked how it fit together and ended but I didn't really enjoy the journey there.

12th - Tormented (1960) (on TCM, available on Prime). Grade C+
13th - Identity (on AMC+). Grade B

14th - Goosebumps (on Netflix). On the other end of the spectrum of Saw X, this movie is also not for everyone and in this instance, I'm the one falling outside the target demographic. It has a good setup and a decent resolution but I found the middle pretty silly. I'm sure if I saw this at a younger age or watched this with children who enjoyed the ride, my opinion would be different, because there is something there. It just isn't for me. Grade C-

We watched The Burning last night. Pretty good slasher with some impressive effects. George Costanza was a bit of a distraction early on, and I was hoping we'd see him get killed. The kid that played Woodstock is Hugo from Succession. Had to look it up since he looked so familiar. I saw in the end credits that Holly Hunter was in it but didn't recognize her. Must have been the really little kid in the group.
Overall worth the watch though. Plenty of silliness in decision making and cheesy acting but a fun one.

I was into it more than you two were during it, it seems. I thought it was funny, and I really liked how they had different ways to tell who was running around in the dark - glow necklace, phone, etc.. I also seem to gravitate to movies that have uncomfortable interactions, and that was front and center at the beginning of the movie. The ending and how it ties in was the icing on the cake for me - so well done. It's one of my favorites of the last couple years, and I think I've watched it 4 times now.

Tom Savini. He was doing stuff like this and The Prowler (also I haven't seen and is near the top of my list now) instead of Friday 2 and 3. Holly Hunter is just in the background and maybe has one line while they are in the canoes rowing. Very easy to miss her in the movie.

Yeah, as soon as I saw his name, it gave me hope for some great stuff and he didn't disappoint as usual. Big fan since Dawn of the Dead.

15th - Triangle (on Freevee). Watched this based on a vague rec upthread and otherwise went in blind. Didn't know what the premise was going to be until it was well underway, and then it changed. This turned out to be less of a horror movie and more of a mystery, albeit a very unconventional one. Not a lot of scares here but it was an intriguing journey and it entertained me. Grade B-

Absolutely makes sense. I felt similar.

16th - The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (on YouTube). This is a short film by Ari Aster, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar. Man, is this a twisted movie. Not so much for anything overtly graphic but the ideas here are thoroughly icky. There are scares but its the subject matter that makes one's skin crawl. Very well done and it will stay with you, for better or worse. Grade B

It's made by the same guy who made Hereditary and Midsommar, but this one is really twisted this time? Okay, I guess I should check this out.

[watches trailer]

Oh FFS I'm totally watching this but I'll need to shower afterward.

I watched Sissy just a bit before Bodies and it had a bit of a similar approach - bottle set with young people stuck in a house for a party, things go awry... but it also did some things that weren't what you expected. It had a couple of terrible special effects, but I liked it (and Bodies).

Uh oh, I’m about 15 minutes into Zombie Town (Hulu). New movie that surprised me with bit parts by Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, and Scott Thompson early. I checked IMDB and see Bruce McCullough is going to show up too.

This movie suuucks - just brutal acting, high school play level. I’ll stick around for Bruce then bail most likely.

ETA: it kept getting worse. I’m out.

The Exorcist
The Shining
The Omen

Nothing good has really come out in the last 40+ years
I would put Scream, Candyman, Barbarian, Let the Right One In and Hereditary pretty high up there. Maybe not Shining or Exorcism but on par with The Omen.
Let the Right On In, the Swedish Fish or foreign version I liked much better
But it's like Romance Horror, it's different

Yep, it has a little teen romance twist on it but it's still a horror movie for sure. The Wailing and Train to Busan are 2 other pretty great modern foreign horror movies. Shaun of the Dead and Cabin in the Woods also are good for not pure horror.

I love Cabin in the Woods, haven't seen it in a while

My list so far
Texas Chainsaw(22)
Horror of Dracula
REC
REC 2
Hell House LLC
Evil Dead(13)
The Boy
The Boogeyman
Tales of Halloween
Haunted Mansion (23)

Candyman(21)- decent sequel that adds a new twist but most of the kills are off screen
The Possession of Hannah Grace- a different take on exorcism type movies. Creepy and relatively short, I liked it.
