FFA Official Horror Movie Thread (21 Viewers)

I Saw the TV Glow is an excellent bit of 90s tween horror nostalgia (Are You Afraid of the Dark, Buffy, etc) and identity psychology backed by an amazing soundtrack. I enjoyed it and will see it again when it comes to streaming.

Just watched this last night on Max. Weird movie lol.

More a horror of a general feeling of unease/disorientation than the classic horror flick stuff.

Felt like the movie production of some guy's bad acid trip.

Watched Jennifer's Body last night (my first time using Tubi). Very fun popcorn horror comedy. Diablo Cody wrote it...she also wrote Lisa Frankenstein, which I had a great time watching.

Beezel 2024---This was a movie that all the TikTok horror creators were just hyping as one of the scariest movies of the year. It follows a house over three periods of time that in the basement there is a witch that possesses one of the residents to bring victims to her so she can eat them.

It had some terrifying scenes, but the problem is we needed more witch. The creature/special effects were well done and it just seemed wasted to only have about 3 minutes of it on the screen. Also I think the 3rd half of the movie fell victim to the director/producer's egos in that they were also the main actor/actress. I get it was a low budget movie, but we got too much of them acting and not enough monster.

It was 5.99 on PPV and I give it a 3/5

Alex Garland's "Men," (Max)
I enjoy all his work and this one is no different. Well shot, solid feeling of menace throughout, the third act is something I could see people loving, hating and everything in between.

You guys renting, streaming? Watching classics or going outside the norm for some new stuff?
Yes
I'm trying to pick stuff that my wife will watch, so I'm sticking mostly to the mainstream. And TBH, the Top 200 exercise convinced me that I've seen 90%+ of the horror movies that I would want to see, so these are mostly going to be rewatches except for Maxxxine and Longlegs (if it hits streaming this month).

We're going to kick things off tonight for sure, but I haven't decided what to start with. We will definitely do TCM, with X and Pearl to follow, but I doubt we'll start that tonight. Rosemary's Baby is on the list, and so is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I think The Witch is too slow for Mrs. K -- she wouldn't get it. Midsommar is another one that's probably too much of a slow burn. On the other hand, I think [REC] would probably be fine despite the subtitles.

We'll for sure do Halloween on the the 31st, although the Jets game would be a good alternative I suppose.

We are starting with Rosemary's Baby tonight. In addition to my list...we will be watching plenty of other classics....we are horror mavens in our home.
Paramount Plus has Apartment 7A, which is either a prequel or sequel to Rosemary's Baby. This will almost certainly be making my 31 for 31 list.

I remember seeing it a long time ago….let us know what you thought about it.

As soon as I feel this way I look at yet another list or hear another podcast episode that reminds me of things I haven't gotten to, heard of, or just saw so long ago I have no good memory of it.

I am going to try to give my silly category list an honest go and try to have fun with it, but I also want to do a large portion of stuff that would fit the description above. I still have about 10 categories/days I don't at least have 1 idea written down for, but they are also some of the most generic ones like witches or the undead. So far I have ideas ranging from Eraserhead to Monkey Shines to St. Maud to Deep Red to Halloween 6 written down. The main rewatches I want to get to are Shaun of the Dead, The VVitch/The Lighthouse, and maybe Ari Aster's movies but including his shorts.

The one main subgenre my wife and I gravitate to are found footage movies, so I am trying to figure out how to sprinkle in more of those as I go.

There are so many movies I like watching in October. Here's what I usually watch in the horror genre:
The Orphanage
The Shining/Dr Sleep
Signs
Night of the Creeps
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Ghostbusters
28 Days/Weeks Later
Psycho
Poltergeist
Christine
Paranorman

And there are about an equal amount of non-horror movies I like. Won't get to everything.

My October list is taken mostly from the Horror Countdown, either movies I have not seen or ones that had a vastly different rank than myself. Started last night with Hush, directed by Mike Flanagan, which ranked 135 on the top 200. Solid movie, short runtime, more of a thriller than horror imo, but a different take on the home invasion story. I did have one major gripe but don't want to give anything away here, B+.

Getting this started

1st - Immaculate (Hulu) I almost saw this at the theater earlier this year, but went with Late Night with the Devil instead (good decision). Interesting casting here, as Sydney Sweeney and one of the Italian prostitutes from The White Lotus portray nuns. Sweeney is actually pretty great here being cast against type. Between her, the eerie setting of the Italian convent and the very timely subtextual themes, I found enough here to recommend, especially for those who are patient enough to let the story develop. Grade B

I'm watching solo tonight, so I decided to run down the Top 200 list and just watch the first one that I've never seen before. That would be #21 Let The Right One In. I saw the American version shortly after it came out, and I enjoyed it, so I have high hopes for this one. (The next one up by this method would be #44 Audition, so I might have to queue that up sometime.)

Last night I started with the ironically titled The Fog.

I just posted the DotM for Oct, and will post in here as well that it was John Carpenter who had the most points/votes in the top 200 countdown we had earlier this year. I was surprised at how many unseen options I had with him so I wrote down a handful to incorporate into any 31 in 31 plans - Vampires, The Fog, Prince of Darkness, Creepshow, and Village of the Damned. Looks like a bunch are on Peacock this month?

Two of my top 10 - I hope you like them. If you liked the American version, I don't know how you don't like the original. Like every other remake I can think of, the original is just more - more unsettling, more edge to the personal dynamics, and just scarier. It's one my wife hasn't seen so I will do a rewatch with her soon.

I might be watching solo tonight, so I bumped up a couple that would cross off a couple boxes on my list: In a Violent Nature and Terrifier. I try to spare my wife the worst slashers and gore during this month.

Started watching Legend of Hill House with my wife, 6 episodes in. Really good so far, hope the payoff is good .
Viking Wolf- Swedish take on werewolves. Low budget special effects and a story you've seen many times before but still kinda liked it.
Escape Room- This was better than expected. Kind of like Cube but with group puzzles

Always start the season off with Phantasm - favorite horror movie of all time, it has it all.
I re-watched this last night. I like how they didn't even try to explain anything - we just have to accept a gorilla strong Tall Man, dangerous flying spears and Jawas and other creatures running all around the cemetery.
I mean it has it all. Great music, scary tall guy, different dimension, and zero explanations. Neighborhood ice cream man is main character. Just fantastic.

Possessor (Tubi) was a trip. The sex scenes edged over into porn somewhat, the violence was extreme and squelchy, there was body horror throughout in flashes… not surprising that it’s from Cronenberg’s son.

The main plot was interesting - particularly at the end. Jennifer Jason Leigh has captured my attention her whole career, and did it here too, in a subdued way.

Keaheliito Horn (no chance that’s spelled right) had a bit part - Tanis from Letterkenny / Deer Lady from Res Dogs.

Edit: Kaniehtiio Horn

Yeah, this was really excellent. It's been a long time since I saw the American remake so I can't really compare them with any confidence, but what struck me about the original was how strangely warm it was through most of the movie. The child actors have some pretty good chemistry, considering the story and the genre. I don't remember the remake being quite so poignant, but like I said, it's been a long time.

The look of the film was nice too. It looked like what I think of when I think of Sweden in the 1980s. No idea if they got the details right or not, but it looks convincing to me.

Glad I made time for this one.

V/H/S - I'm way behind on this one, but watched last night for the first time. It was not what I expected (anthology format) but I think they pulled it off really well. Most of the stories were very creepy, and handling these as short stories helped eliminate "filler".

I think they handled the found footage aspect very well up until the last story where I couldn't figured out who in the group was videotaping it - and why he would keep doing so while all the **** was going down.

"Amateur Night", the story with the Succubus was the highlight for me, and the one with the doctor talking with his girlfriend living in the "haunted" apartment was very chilling and well done.

The Fog and Prince of Darkness are clearly the strength of the ones you mentioned. Creepshow was Romero and King. And a great romp. 5 really great stories of horror and macabre.

I love The Fog. Great performances, great ambience and music. A really good ghost story.

Prince of Darkness on repeated viewings get's better and better. Lot's of things going on. And again some great performances.

Reggie is the man!!!!

Last night was some 80's glory with Christine. I had fun with it and just let it be what it was. Mrs. Yambag was bored and could not appreciate the campiness. She remembers seeing it as a teen and remembering how dumb it was compared to Freddy, etc. I thought it was pretty well done for 1983 and enjoyed it.

Not to sidetrack but I must ask; do you feel that way about The Ring vs Ringu? I personally prefer the American version. I also recognize I saw it first by several years and had rewatched The Ring many times before seeing Ringu to the point where I finally saw Ringu, there were few surprises and my reactions were more technical than visceral.

Underrated classic.

The second VHS is also fantastic with what many feel to have the single best short of the entire series.

After Part 2, the quality overall starts to really tank.
