FFA Top 200 Horror Movies of All Time: #107: They Live (31 Viewers)

I thought this was a very good sequel that satisfied fans of both The Shining movie and book. Was a late cut for me and might have placed had it not been for my bias against sequels, prequels, reboots and offshoots

I didn't include many sequels in my list, but this didn't really feel like a sequel to me. I think the story holds up on its own. But my love for The Shining and some of the scenes from this movie are probably what catapulted it up in my rankings.

I get that. While very good, this did not feel like a Kubrick film.

I was actually talking about this gem at work this week after I watched it. I described it to the kid as the movie I would play in the 2am movie slot of my horror movie event at a theater. It's a perfect party/group movie to wake everybody up and get some "WTF are we watching?" reactions. As I posted earlier - this would be my version of Evil Dead 2. It's stupid, crass, and vulgar. But, it's also at time charming and hilarious as well. It gets metal right, it hit's some good nostalgia buttons being a period piece, and it lands perfectly in the stupid/sarcastic comedy zone that I seem to occupy - part Arrested Development part Beavis and Butthead? (not quite right, I will keep thinking) I watched it this week, had a blast, and realized how much I'd want it in the collection. Like Scores posted, looking at what I had written down, this would have landed in the 15-20 range on my list. Not quite to the level of a couple horror comedies that I am sure will be on the countdown, but for me personally it's currently not far behind. It won't take you more than 5mins to see if this is up your alley or not.

Hmmmm...sounds worth checking out next October even though I am not a big Evil Dead guy.

Sort of related: I just saw Sam Raimi's Spiderman on 35mm at the same theater where his first movie Into the Woods and The Evil Dead premiered.

Ah yes, the Redford Theater. That place is beautiful and their prices are really reasonable. Play tons of old classics there. Saw recently that they are going to be playing Boogie Nights in 70mm in early May and was planning on checking it out.

ETA: I just looked on their website again and saw that they are planning the original Godzilla ('54) and the rare Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster ('71) on a double feature in June....lol.

This sounds interesting too:

Yeah I am going for Boogie Nights on 70mm for sure. I was surprised to hear Raimi had never come back to the Redford despite then trying many times to get him to do a showing of one of his films now that he is famous and has several well known films.

Just an FYI, I think that this is the best movie in the predator franchise. I appreciate the risk it took and think it nailed it.

Better than the original? I haven't seen it, but I know it was well-received. I should check this out sometime.

One of my final cuts. Think I had it at 82 or so

The Black Phone

Finney Blake, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer's previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.

This one's mine so I'll pimp it the best I can. This is a movie where I really wanted to vote for the entire series rather than one specific movie. I chose three, because that's really when the story opens up, but the whole series is worth watching in order.

This is a found footage/mockumentary style series that starts with the very simple premise of a ghost hunter trying to prove the existence of ghosts. 7 sequels later, this series has morphed into a mystery horror film with the guy using his documentary to solve a decades long serial killing.

It's campy, fun, and very low budget, but the main character/director is very likable, he excels at telling the story, and they have some genuinely creepy found footage/hidden camera moments. I feel like despite it dealing with ghosts and such, it's very solidly grounded in reality which is a major plus for me. Each one usually ends with some kind of hook or twist that makes you sad it's over.

Highly recommended just note that each one is a continuation of the next so you kind of have to watch in order, and the first two, while good, don't come close to how good the series gets.

The Blackwell Ghost 1 only has a 59-minute run time, so I think I can squeeze that into my busy social calendar and give it a try.

I love it. Wan wears his influence of late 70’s early 80’s horror on his sleeve.

Super creepy atmosphere…..great musical score, outstanding twists.

Highly recommended!!!

This is one I really need to rewatch. I should have liked it more than I did, and I'm not sure if I was in the wrong frame of mind or wrong atmosphere or distracted or what. We just got Apple TV to watch some show my wife wanted to watch and I see this is on there so I can give it another spin for free now.

This would have been pretty high on my list but I filtered it out as not horror. Pretty silly considering the prior one was Annihilation from my list, which is probably just as borderline. I think some googling convinced me Annihilation belonged and the Predator movies didn't... but I can't reconstruct that border.

I preface by saying that I get why people love this movie. I hate it. Not sure why but I got angrier at not liking it the further into the movie that I got. No plans to revisit this one.

I think there are probably 4 movies that have this same synopsis. I went with Deadstream (77th, so not sure if it got included), same movie.

Prey is definitely horror in my book. Skews toward slasher, which is weird because you’d think that it would be a monster type movie. I mean, scary, invisible alien stalking the “helpless” female protagonist/final girl is real close to shadowy figure stalking helpless female protagonist/final girl.

I hadn’t thought about Prey as a horror movie but I can see it. Works for me. Real good flick and I can’t wait to see what they follow it up with. It’s a pretty much endless concept. Predator in Ancient Rome, Predator in the Old West, Predator vs Vikings, etc.

Take my money right now.

I'd pay good money to see more Predator crossovers.

Predator vs Terminator
Predator vs Winter Soldier
Predator vs Sweetrobin Aryrn from Game of Thrones
Endless possibilities.

This thread is going to be great fun.
