FFOC 2009 (1 Viewer)

Hey Hey all-

I know a bunch of posters played in the FFOC last year- and since the first real leagues drafted today at 9am CST, and since I'm a junkie I have my first team all drafted and ready to go- so here's the thread for lamenting/bragging about last year and discussing strategy for this year.

Last year I had 6 teams (accidentally auto drafted one of them)- finished 1st in one league and was eliminated on the last cut, and 2nd in one league.

For those not familiar FFOC is a 2rb, 3wr 1qb, 1te, 1dst, 1k 1 flex league where the flex CAN be a QB- 4 pts for passing TDs otherwise standard Non PPr scroring.

This morning I had the 4th pick in the draft.

Round 1: Maurice Jones-Drew

Round 2: Randy Moss

Round 3: Steve Smith

Round 4: Anquan Boldin

Round 5: Larry Johnson

Round 6: Carson Palmer

Round 7: David Garrard

Round 8: Kellen Winslow

Round 9: Antonio Bryant

Round 10: Jamal Lewis

Round 11: Derrick Mason

Round 12: Willis McGahee

Round 13: Shaun Hill

Round 14: Baltimore Ravens

Round 15: Steve Smith

Round 16: Laurence Maroney

Round 17: Anthony Fasano

Round 18: Tashard Choice

Round 19: Indianapolis Colts

Round 20: Adam Vinatieri

Obviously my plan was to go wide receiver heavy- snagging three guys I think can be top 10ers in the first 4 rounds and sacrificing my 2nd/3rd RB slot. I am going to be counting on one of Jamal/Mcgahee/LJ/Maroney to take or hold onto the bulk of their teams carries to not feel this pinch.

Pleasant surprises: Kellen Winslow being there as the 7th or 8th TE of the board, Ravens falling to 14th as the 7th or 8th Def of the board- Antonio Bryant being there in the 9th round in a 3 wr league.

Biggest decision for me was in rd 11 Lance Moore or Derrick Mason. Went with the steady vet to help fill bye weeks.

I was just coming in here to check if anyone was talking about this yet. I still need to set up my draft times.. I like the buy in to have a better chance at the vegas bracket this year. Last year my brother and I took first in two leagues and lost the matchup between #1 and #2 in both leagues and didn't make the vegas bracket. We still got free teams with both leagues though. We're buying in with another 3. Should be fun again. I'm looking forward to it, as last year we got in real late and didn't know the in's and out's of roster space and roster moves. Playing two QB's is huge.

I've got to get my draft days set up soon.

I'm curious what the incentive to go WR early 3 times in a non-PPR league? Also, I agree that even with 4 pts per passing TD, that 2 QBs are the way to go.

Going 3WR has to do with the whole setup. Once you agree that you want to go QB>RB as a flex in most situations you can start to see that RB holds more depth than in traditional drafts (and especially 2 rb 2 wr 1 flex drafts)- first there are 10 teams- so you could realistically have every team have a starting RB on their squad as their 3rd option. Then you have increased importance of the 2nd and 3rd tier QBs- putting the run on QBs higher which allows a lot of players to drop- enough of which are starting RBs. Finally this year has multiple situations where a RB is going in the 5th or later and is expected to get the bulk of his teams carries (or at least will have the opportunity to). Larry Johnson, Jamal Lewis, Magahee/Rice, Fred Taylor, Julius Jones, Benson, Beanie, D Ward. This year is simply the best year i've seen for putting together a RB#2 by committee. I only need one of LJ, Lewis, Magahee to hold onto their starting job to have good odds at RB#2 production from a late round pick- and I still have a chance at Maroney or Choice getting enough carries to plug in some weeks.

I took the q school route, using the FBG special, but I don't draft til august. I've never played in a league where you get return points for both the individual and the ST/DT, will be leaning on DD for help on this draft. Tho, I do that anyway. Gotta figure that changes peoples draft minds.

What is this special you speak of?

Played here last year with 3 leagues, wound up coming in 2nd place in the July Bonus Bracket and also

scored a few 1st place finishes in my 10 man leagues. So i have a couple of free leagues this season

(2 tier 2 teams and a free tier 1 team)... Just drafted a couple of Q-School teams to get in Fantasy mode

for 2009  .....QB is the way to go if your looking to compete in this format. All in all Stan runs a pretty

good game....

My draft the other night i went QB/QB to start and wound up with Brees and Manning.

Leaves my RB's a little weak, but in this format who knows.

Ok- draft #4 from the 10 spot

1. Stephen Jackson

2. Randy Moss

3. Steve Smith

4. Marques Colston

5. Darren Mcfadden

6. Knowshon Moreno

7. Dallas Clark

8. Matt Hasselbeck

9. Donald Brown

10. Eddie Royal

11. Shaun Hill

12. Jerricho Cotchery

13. NYG

14. CHI

15. Marc Bulger

16. Nate Washington

17. Correll Buckhalter

18. Washington Redskins

19. Anthony Fasano

20. Matt Prater

1. Clearly I dominated the WR position, Washington will probably end up being cut for a QB quite quickly- as soon as someone in Tampa, NYJ, Cle, MIN irons their starting QB situation out.

2. RBs are very good to. Happy when Sjax falls to me, thrilled when McFadden and Moreno are still there at 5/6, pumped to grab Donald Brown's upside in the 9th.

3. Dallas Clark looks good to me this year.

4. MY QBS SUCK. Fasano and Washington and Washington are likely to be quick cuts to add a few QBs. The runs were crazy. 3 went in the 1st, 4 more went before the 3/4 turn, I ended up taking the 16th QB with Hass in the 1st pick of the 8th round. Looking at the draft I don't see any reason to think I should have grabbed someone higher. I will probably be rotating my flex players with my backup QBs and RBs- and maybe even Royal due to matchups. Its a weak position for me for sure.

5. Good defenses to rotate in and out.

Overall I'm very happy with this draft. If I can get good flex play from Moreno/Brown and a couple of QBs I'll be sitting pretty and dominating with my WR corps and RB1.

Just did a draft, here is the results, two of the picks where by accident I never wanted knowshow or deangelo, I was unfamiliar with the draft setup and they got auto drafted :/ Still think I have a top 3 team. I wanted to go 3 wr / 2 qb in the first 5 rounds but the auto picks screwed me so i changed my strat, my stafford pick is that i think if he starts he will put up numbers like paytons rookie year since the lions suck and will always be behind.

Round 1: Andre Johnson

Round 2: DeAngelo Williams

Round 3: Anquan Boldin

Round 4: Terrell Owens

Round 5: Knowshon Moreno

Round 6: Dallas Clark

Round 7: Marshawn Lynch

Round 8: Matt Cassel

Round 9: LenDale White

Round 10: Matthew Stafford

Round 11: Patrick Crayton

Round 12: John Carlson

Round 13: Tim Hightower

Round 14: Chris Henry

Round 15: Jake Delhomme

Round 16: Jeremy Maclin

Round 17: Arizona Cardinals

Round 18: Nick Folk

Round 19: Glen Coffee

Round 20: Shayne Graham

The draft format sucks...you only have 90 seconds to make your pick and even if you have an idea of who you want, if you don't get that guy up in the draft slot it will auto pick the next position you need. It's BS.. We drafted last night and already had Reggie Wayne, and the POS auto drafted Anthony Gonzalez.... I don't know where they come up with their projections and listings but they are nowhere near the Draft Dominator and sometimes it is very difficult to find a guy that is at the top of the DD listings, and nowhere to be found in the FFOC listings. So you start searching and then run out of time. I guess the best thing you can do is put a bunch of the guys you are looking at over in the right hand column "watch list" and then they will be easy to find.....if they aren't picked by someone else. Here's ours:QB Ben Roethlisberger PITRB Adrian Peterson MINRB Clinton Portis WASWR Reggie Wayne INDWR Anthony Gonzalez INDWR DeSean Jackson PHITE Heath Miller PITOP Jay Cutler CHIK Stephen Gostkowski NETDSP Philadelphia Eagles PHIBench Lee Evans BUFBench Reggie Bush NOBench LenDale White TENBench Earl Bennett CHIBench New England Patriots NEBench Chad Pennington MIABench Rob Bironas TENBench Anthony Fasano MIABench Sammy Morris NEBench Chris Henry CIN

Agree that it's a horrible system. If you want to queue someone up, you have to find their name, double click them which sends them onto another list, and then click the name again on that separate list to move them into the queue list where they will then be the autopick. At a couple points during one of my drafts, it wasn't registering my double click until I went into a separate browser window and came back in. Don't remember these problems last year, but only had one team so who knows...

FYI you can queue guys directly from the secondary smaller list right to the auto draft spot.

Played last year and got 2nd (free team this year) in division.

I meant to write down all my impressions on the league for this years draft but forgot.

What I remember though is:

1) Using a 2nd QB in the Flex Spot is the way to go (Good RB/WR's scored 15-20 range, Good QB's scored 20+).

2) Not to worry about RB's too much. Having one stud and a couple 3rd Tier ones is sufficient. Especially if those 3rd tiers have upside. If you start a QB in the flex you'll only need to start 2 each week and with only 10 teams you should get some decent ones later.

3) In fact thats they best way to handle the RB posistion -> Upside. Drafting people like C. Johnson and D. Williams really helped me last year.

4) WR's are a premium even without the PPR. Especially since you must start 3 each week. This hurt me last year as I tried to go with many lower tier (Cotchery-esque level) players.

5) Kicker and Defense are pretty much a crapshoot as usual. The top defenses (Bal/Pit ect) have a slight advantage due to the negative PA scoring (any points allowed over 22) but your probably better of playing DEF By Comm.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Round 19: Mike Walker

Round 20: Kevin Boss

I will say this, having one single player ranked higher than most has lead to me drafting S Jax with the 3rd, 5th, 9th and 10th picks, so far 4/5 teams have him starting for me. Jason Smith had better pan out.

Had my first draft last night for this...I think it went well, although I definitely went an unconventional route, i had the 9th pick and am not thrilled with any of the first round RB's (that would fall to the 9th pick)...

R1: Fitzgerald...was hoping Brees/Brady fell here but neither did and didn't think Manning warranted a pick here.

R2: R. Moss...again didn't think the RB's avail here were much better than what would be available in R3. My initial plan is to go RB/RB next 2 rounds....

R3: R. Brown...think he will have a monster year, but at the least is a servicable RB1.

R4: S. Smith...I couldn't resist with him still on the board

R5: C. Palmer...was targeting Schaub here but he went just before me....

R6: J. Cutler...2 good qb's are an absolute must in this league

R7: R. Rice...needed a RB2

R8: D. Ward...needed a RB3

R9: J. Cotchery...Bye week filler

R10: T. Jones...figuring I should grab as many starting RB's as there are and hope one has a big season.

R11: D. Mason...Another Bye Week filler

R12: Chicago Def...a defense run was going off and I saw a pretty big drop.

R13: F. Jones...another RB who could break out.

R14: J. Delhomme...just another back up qb in cases of injuries...imo his floor is qb20

R15: D. Keller...I had about 4 TE's i would have been happy with when I started looking around R12, decided to let others make the choice for me.

R16: Edge...maybe a reach but he was the last rb on the board that has a chance to start

R17: M. Crosby...blah kicker

R18: K. Boss

R19: Buffalo Def

R20: S. Rice

My Team:

QB: Palmer, Cutler, Delhomme

RB: R. Brown, R. Rice, D. Ward, T. Jones, Edge

WR: Fitz, R. Moss, S. Smith, Cotchery, Mason, S. Rice

TE: Keller, Boss

K: Crosby

Def: Chic, Buff

All in all i like my team. My 2 Qb's both have a chance to be in the top 10 QB's, My 3 starting WR's are 3 that it wouldn't be a shock to see any of them end up as the top WR. TE are middle of the pack but I think Keller is in for a big year. Kicker is a crap shoot, and i think my 2 defenses are pretty solid. My weakness is obviously at RB, but I don't think i need anything spectacular from them to win, just solid performances.

Here is one of my Tier teams from the #1 spot:

Palmer/Schaub/Delhomme

Peterson/Westbrook/R. Bush/Donald Brown/W. Parker/Ch. Taylor

Andre Johnson/Santonio Holmes/A. Bryant/Santana Moss/D. Hixon/M. Walker

Z. Miller/ V. Davis

Kaeding/Longwell

Colts

I love this team!
