Doesn't seem like a good method to me.

As one example, consider third base. Mike Lowell was first on 3 ballots and second on 1 ballot but left completely off 4 ballots... We don't even know who 5 of the panelists chose as their first or second candidate, since the top 10 vote getters only collectively got 5 of the first place and 5 of the second place votes.

This makes absolutely no sense. How can Lowell be the top choice of three panelists and finish #10? How can the first or second choice of half of the panelists not get enough votes to even finish in the top 10?

Seriously, what makes this better than the Gold Glove choices?

You are misreading the ballots. Lowell was not first on any. He was 10th (as in 10th place, not 10 points) on 3 ballots, 4th on one ballot, 7th on another, 9th, and not in the top 10 on the rest.Like any measure of defense, it definitely has its flaws. But looking over the numbers, there seems to be quite a bit of agreement between the panelists. One glaring way that it is better than the Gold Glove is that not everyone is eligible. No Rafael Palmeiro winning even though he DH'ed 140 games.
