Final Jets Play (1 Viewer)

Anyone have a link to the official scoring of that last play for the Jets? Who gets the yardage on that?
(:08) (Shotgun) C.Pennington pass short middle to L.Washington to NYJ 40 for 8 yards [D.Freeney]. Lateral to B.Smith to NYJ 37 for -3 yards. Lateral to L.Coles to IND 44 for 19 yards. Lateral to C.Pennington to IND 37 for 7 yards. Lateral to J.McCareins to IND 35 for 2 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by NYJ-B.Smith at IND 33. B.Smith to IND 37 for -4 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by NYJ-L.Coles at IND 40. L.Coles to IND 27 for 13 yards. Lateral to N.Mangold to IND 27 for no gain. FUMBLES, RECOVERED by Not a link I realize

I would asume that L.Washingotn gets the credit for the catch and the rest who touched it get credit or yards. Until the fumble. Then it is fumble return yards.

L.Washington- 8 yards

B.Smith- -3 yards

L.Coles- 19 yards

C.Pennington- 7 yards

J.McCareins- 2 yards.

Since the initial play was a pass all of the yardage goes as passing/receiving yards. The final receiving stats look like this:

edit to add: The Gator is correct, after the McCairins fumble they are no longer receiving yards, they are fumble return yards

Code:
PASS RECEIVING NO YDS AVG LG TD L.Coles 6 81 13.5 19 0 J.Cotchery 3 65 21.7 33 1 T.Dwight 3 31 10.3 15 0 L.Washington 1	8 8.0 8 0 C.Baker 1	6 6.0 6 0 S.Ryan 1	6 6.0 6 0 C.Houston 1	5 5.0 5 0 B.Smith 1 -4 -4.0 -1 0 C.Pennington 0	7 0.0 7 0 J.McCareins	0	2 0.0 2 0
This is according to the NFL Gamebook: http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/gamecenter/g...0061001_IND@NYJ

I have a question about this play. When there were "FUMBLE" during the play, I thought there was a rule that on an offensive play only the fumbling player can advance the ball (if / when he recovers the fumble)??

It looks like after several fumbles the ball was recovered by someone else and advanced? Am I thinking of a college or special teams only rule? Or just imagining things? Sorry, it's Monday am.

I think if it's assumed that Chris Berman will go "woop woop woop woop" during the highlights, then you are allowed to advance a fumble.

I didn't see the play, but I think that rule is a "forward fumble". So I assume none of those fumbles were forward?

That only applies to fumbling a ball forward, IIRC. Also, I think it only applies to 4th down.

I think that rule is if the ball is fumbled foward.

Here's the rule concerning fumbles:

On a play from scrimmage, if an offensive player fumbles anywhere on the field during fourth down, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If any player fumbles after the two-minute warning in a half, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If recovered by any other offensive player, the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble unless it is recovered behind the spot of the fumble. In that case, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery. Any defensive player may recover and/or advance any fumble at any time.
Since the ball should have been dead at the spot of the first fumble recovery by the Jets, that would have really sucked had they scored a touchdown and had it called back.

Except that since it was after the two-minute warning, there can be no return yards. The play was dead as soon as B. Smith recovered McCareins fumble. There has to be some games that these stats matter.

Thanks for the digging. This is what I thought while watching the play unfold. I kept yelling, "That ball is DEAD!" and waiting for the refs to blow a whistle. Well, if Coles is hurt and misses anytime, owners can send some happy XOXO letters to the refs for allowing a dead play to continue long enough to get someone hurt.
