Looking at the early 2009 Chiefs season, they didn’t seem to have an identity. In year’s past they were power-run football, complemented with the all-pro TE, a super line, and a decent defense. That was the Chiefs of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. That era just ended.
Coming into this year, the offensive identity seemed focused on trying to do the same style of football (without Gonzales) that they were able to execute in years past. They had an emerging stud WR in D. Bowe, and Larry Johnson was 2 years removed from his uber-stud campaigns. On the surface, it looked feasible to consider some success would come their way with new hot-shot Bilicheck protégé Todd Haley calling the shots.
Now consider the last vestige of that power run football is now gone. Really, the Chiefs O-line would make Adrian Peterson look bad. L. Johnson ended up precipitating a situation that had to be dealt with. Really, he ended up doing the Chiefs a favor. Now, with LJ off the team, it seems that Haley has taken the opportunity to re-made the offensive identity. He is making this Chiefs team look more and more like the Patriots.
Think about the similarities to the Patriots. He has the same QB that executed the Patriots offense last year in Matt Cassell. He has brought in Chris Chambers to be the downfield threat to help Bowe stretch the field. He has no playmaker at tight end, so he brings in Lance Long to be the Wes Welker type that scoops up all the underneath junk that is left over from Chambers and Bowe. Jamaal Charles isn’t going to be scaring any defenses any time soon. And it’s mostly due to the weakness of the O-line. With the weak line the TE’s are being asked to block more now, so that Cassell can get down the field.
And couple this new wide-open philosophy with an inept defense, and a quality QB that can get the ball down the field…and I see the reason to optimistic about the Chiefs offensive weapons as being fantasy-start worthy.
They play the hapless Raiders this week. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a high scoring game.
