JAKE GROVE GETS PAID

Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2009, 12:05 p.m.

Though the Dolphins have been quiet for much of free agency (after re-signing three of their own), they’ve made a big splash on the offensive line.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Raiders center Jake Grove has agreed to a five-year, $29 million contract. The deal includes $14.5 million guaranteed.

Grove was a second-round pick of the Raiders in 2004. Has 46 career starts in five NFL seasons.

apparently the Dolphins staff feel Satele is not big enough to play center within the Dolphins scheme. He'll probably be moved over to guard or traded.does anyone know anything about Jake Grove? Don't really know how good he's supposed to be, if he has any upside left, or what his reputation is.

odd, should have traded satele first, I'd bet he would have been a commodity.

Why are people under the impression that Satele was a good center all of the sudden? He had a promising rookie year but regressed strongly in his second year, and center has been talked about as a need position all offseason for the Fins.

I know he was a great C prospect out of VT

Dolphin fans loved the guy a year ago. I didn't realize he had dropped so far in the last year.

Regarding Grove, I can tell you that Cable wanted him back, and a lot of Raider fans blamed Grove for any problems the team had running inside. Not a strong, powerful guy, he won't be handling Wilfork by himself. But he must be stronger than Satele, I guess.

I truly never spent much time analyzing Grove, but the general impression I get is that the Raiders would have taken him back if the price was reasonable, but didn't feel he was irreplaceable.

Grove wasn't popular in Oakland with fans, but that might be because he never became a dominating Pro Bowler. He beat out Wade and Newberry in Oakland, so I would call him decent.

Was mentioned in the Dolphins thread . . .Had a great rookie season. Last year started off well but then torn his labrum a few games into the season. Also lost both of their starting guards which didn't help Satele either. The impression I'm getting from Dolphn coaches is that they don't think he's strong enough and has short arms. They'll probably move him to guard or try to trade him.

I echo this.

If the knock on Satele is that he was not strong enough, signing Grove seems like an odd move. Grove is not a power guy and either because of coming off of injury or just that he is not that player to begin with- he never helped much in the inside run game. As a Raider fan, I would not have minded him back but I sure as heck would have been upset if we paid him what the Fins just did.

Parcells has tried a few times to go with finesse players, speed players, skilled players (as their foremost quality that you'd use to describe them) but it always comes down to brute force and power. Parcells offensive and defensive lines were supposed to be built to overpower their opponent. (Apparently) Sparano thinks similarly.Satele might not be cut out for that but that doesn't mean he's not still a very good player. We see linemen move from team to team all the time because they don't fit the scheme.Once Tiki retired, many thought the Giants would have to overhaul their OL because while they could get outside and block for Tiki on those cute little screens, with Brandon they'd have to just be powerful. As we found out, some of those linemen actually fit the new scheme better.Anyhow, it's not much of a knock on Satele nowadays. What will likely come up is how Cs fall in the draft and it's not hard for teams to get the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best Center in the draft, since they do. A team could very possibly get a highly ranked(top 5? 10?) college center in the 4th or 5th round. I don't know how deep the draft is on Cs but, Satele needs to find a home soon before teams think that way.BTW I think Mangold was the highest picked Center in quite some time.
