"Firefly" on Ovation TV (2 Viewers)

I still think it is a huge mistake to watch a short series and skip the most important episode, that being the first, Serenity (which is a double length episode), not to be confused with Serenity the feature length movie which should be watched after the series is over.

But yeah, in general Firefly does not sound like it is for you. Shame though, I have watched pretty much every Sci if series ever made and Firefly had some of the best writing I have seen. Although to be fair, I really believe the series should be classified as a western before being classified as a Sci if show.

If you are looking for hardcore, try BSG. If you are looking for something in the middle, try Babylon 5 (note, with B5, you can't give up after two episodes. It really needs a full season investment.)
Ah see, I didn't realize there was a difference. My mistake although I'm not sure it would've made a big difference. I'll check out BSG eventually.
Yeah it is confusing because the names are the same. The 2 hour pilot of Serenity sets everything up though.

Hope you enjoy BSG. Do not get put off by how slow the mini series is (especially the first two hours). If you make it through all 4 hours of the mini series you will be rewarded by watching the first Episode, 33, which many of us considered one of the best episodes of the entire run.

Loved both B5 and BSG, but IMO, Babylon 5 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> BSGBut you are right, you HAVE to give B5 time.

B5 is my favorite series (not just SciFi, but all genres) of all time. There is no better reward than making it through season 1 of B5. It seems so episodic at times and it turned out to be a brilliant layering for the incredible three season arc that was to follow season 1.

I can completely understand someone not getting into Firefly. It's the story of a freaking cargo ship in a Chinese-Western interstellar backdrop and it has minimal production values at best. It's a show that is appreciated for it's excellent writing and clever turns of phrase and mostly for a perceived lost potential. The overarching storyline of who, or what, exactly is Summer Glau oozes potential to me and many of the other fanboys but we only have 14 episodes to begin to make that determination.I can see it wouldn't be for everyone. My first exposure to the series was from the film Serenity, which I thoroughly enjoyed. There are some serious flaws but it was a rousing fun space romp, with solid production values, that made me laugh out loud several times and really root for the main characters. And Summer's bad###ness was on full display and completely explains why legions of pimple faced teens (and those of us who would have to feel ashamed of ourselves but thank goodness she was 21 at the time even though her character was probably much younger) simply can't get enough of her.

I would almost recommend starting with the film because it will satisfy your sci-fi fix and perhaps engage you in the characters enough to revisit the series through a more understanding lens.

I have considered trying B5 maybe 8 times over the years but I still can't get over how cheesy I thought it was when it first came out. I remember watching the first few episodes and just not being able to get beyond the cheese factor and I keep thinking that if I couldn't get into it when I was at the most sci-fi susceptible point of my life I am not optimistic I will change my opinion 25 years later.

Yikes, I could not agree with that advice less. If you want to do the series the way Weadon intended, please watch from the beginning of the series through to the movie. And read the graphic novel Those Left Behind between the end of the series and the movie. It is the only way to really appreciate the character arcs, IMO.

BSG started great for me, then kinda tailed off as it progressed

love me some firefly, but yes it needs to be seen in order

one of my favorie moments

the doctor is awesome

(i am not gonna spoiler tag it but anyone intending to watch the series should skip this, it is better when it happens in context)

I don't think that's what Jamny is looking for. He was looking for a sci-fi adventure not a sino-western with poor production values that rarely has anything relevant happen in space.I am not dissing the show, I'm a huge fan but it sounds like Jamny was looking for something along the lines of a more traditional space sci-fi movie, for which Serenity fits the bill.

Agreed. If you don't have the patience to get through the first few episodes, it is probably not for you. I have zero idea what you mean by cheesy though. It is an extraordinarily well written and well planned out story. The creator had the general story in his head since he was a kid and the show won the coveted Hugo award which is basically as anti cheese as you can get. A lot of people get put off by the special effects not realizing how ground breaking they were at the time. B5 was the first tv show to use CGI for all space special affects.

That's just it, I was ripe for enjoying groundbreaking effects and thought they fell short by a wide margin. And the costume/makeup I thought were just corny. Mind you my frame of reference on TV were TNG and to a lesser extent DS9 but I thought their effects and makeup were better so BS5 suffered by comparison. Perhaps a little unfair actually, because I was also in position to be extra critical of anything I considered to be a Star Trek knock off. Again, I only watched a few eps so I fully acknowledge that I could have bailed out too early. I thought I heard that they pulled the BS5 after the original airing and reworked pretty extensively before rereleasing it. That true or am I confusing it with another show?

Babylon 5 was shot as a backdoor pilot, meaning that it was used as both a stand alone movie and as an enticement to be picked up as a series. The pilot did well enough that they were picked up. Between the time of the pilot and when the series first aired there were a couple of changes in the cast and a touch of makeup difference in one of the lead characters. As for ST-TNG, I loved the series but comparing TNG to B5 is about as apples and orange as one can get. TNG was a pure 100% episodic, reset everything at the end of the hour, TV show while Babylon 5 was the complete opposite as an intricate multiple season story arc in the form of a space opera. So if you ever do go back and try it out, remove the thought of it being a knock off, it is a completely different show in every possible way outside of the fact that it takes place in space.I am currently completing a run of DS9 now with my daughter now. While still different from B5, DS9 is at least a tiny bit closer because it tried to have a small story arc with the dominion war.

Exactly and it's my mistake for not looking into what Firefly was to begin with. Had I known, I probably wouldn't have started to watch it but once I had them all recorded I looked past the western theme in hopes of a serious sci-fi series. Easily the most interesting part of the show to me, as you mentioned before, was the Summer Glau storyline. There was at least some kind of mystery about it and besides being cute, she's a really good actress. I liked her in the Terminator series.

I think you should enjoy the movie. The western aspect is still there on some levels and you're gonna see a sword fight but there is plenty of sci-fi, tech and space battles. Plus I think it is very funny at times and as I said Summer is quite the little bad###.

I just looked at Joss Whedon credits and just realized I've never seen any of his shows.
you disgust me
:lmao: Buffy fan?
I'm a really big Whedon fan. Everything he does I really like.
I really should have looked into Firefly more before watching. None of his shows ever interested me in the least. I get it though, a certain style appeals to you and the formula works across genres I guess.

Buffy was one I avoided for years. Thought the movie was dumb and just couldn't get into the concept enough to ever give the show a chance, regardless of how hot Sarah Michelle Gellar is (which is very, very hot). I finally gave in and watched it this year. As with Firefly the production values are cheesy (but they get a little better) and over the course of seven seasons a lot of the basic vampire slaying becomes repetitive. I also found vampire abilities in general to be at times distractingly inconsistent. But the vampire thing was just a MacGuffin to move the show along anyway so I let it pass. But despite all that it was just a very well written and fun show. The character development is top notch and, unlike most shows, it has the remarkable insight to call bull#### on its own silliness. The very best episodes (all Joss Whedon directed) rank among the best television out there. All in all I think it was an excellent show and I am glad I finally got around to watching it.But, again, I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone.Try Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. It's a one off (45 min total I think) that I think is very funny. You can find it all over the innerwebs.

I hope I never read a sentence like that again. :(
:lmao: How about this. I couldn't even tell you who he was before this thread.
wow, you really must not follow tv that much. The guy is basically a legend. In football terms it's like not knowing who Bill Parcells is :)Do you enjoy movies like Thor, Iron Man, Captain America etc? He is going to be directing The Avengers next summer which brings all those characters together.

Oh, c'mon, like Bill Parcells? His resume seems pretty narrow and geared to a specific audience. I've kind of soured on the superhero films. The first Iron Man was good but didn't like the second. I have no interest in Thor or Captain America although I'll probably catch them on HBO some day. I did really like the new Star Trek and X-Men. Love Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

Narrow? His writing credits range from Roseanne, to Toy Story, to Aliens, to Buffy, to Firefly etc. That is as wide a range as you will find when looking through the majority of Hollywood writers.Parcells was as good as analogy as I could come up with. Anyone who follows tv knows Weadon, whether you like any of his stuff or not. Anyone who follows football knows Parcells whether you like his coaching style or not. I am sure there is a better analogy but that's the best I can come up with on short notice :)

I'm not going to try and dispute the legendary status of Joss Whedon to a fan. To each his own. I've heard the name before but couldn't tell you anything about him before this. I would've guessed he was an actor. Maybe compare him to Jeff Fisher. :D

Someone start a poll.

I can buy the Jeff Fisher analogy. You named some movies you liked, what are some tv series you really liked? We might be able to point you to something similar you will like.

I'm already overloaded with TV shows so I'm not really looking for anything else. I was just in the mood for a good sci-fi. Just to rattle off some shows though: Breaking Bad, The Wire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Mad Men, Damages, Hell on Wheels, Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, South Park, Family Guy, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Survivor, Fear Factor, Amazing Race, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Rescue Me, Big Bang Theory, The Tudors, Sunny in Philidelphia, American Horror Story, Community etc.

Ok cool, I won't bother mentioning any. I did not see a Sci Fi show listed in your group anyway so it would be tough to give a Sci Fi recommendation. I like and or love every show on your list that I have seen ( a couple I have not yet seen but intend to. )

I liked Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and V. I loved TNG, liked DS9 and didn't really give Voyager much of a chance. I should probably go back and revisit TNG because I know I didn't see them all.

While I have difficulty recommending it, I have seen pretty much all of Voyager and after it hit it's stride it became a pretty solid show, unfortunately it took about 3 seasons to hit its stride.I have been interested in SCC, does it get a reasonable conclusion or did they leave us with a cliffhanger that will never be resolved?

While I have difficulty recommending it, I have seen pretty much all of Voyager and after it hit it's stride it became a pretty solid show, unfortunately it took about 3 seasons to hit its stride.I have been interested in SCC, does it get a reasonable conclusion or did they leave us with a cliffhanger that will never be resolved?
It went off the air too early to finish its story. The ending they provided was very interesting considering the circumstances that changes the way you look at all previous episodes. It was not a clean ending nor a cliff hanger. Very hard to explain with out just experiencing for yourself.

Personally I hate series that don't have a proper ending but this one was unique enough that I would not dissuade anyone from watching the series.

Just to rattle off some shows though: Breaking Bad, The Wire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Mad Men, Damages, Hell on Wheels, Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, South Park, Family Guy, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Survivor, Fear Factor, Amazing Race, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Rescue Me, Big Bang Theory, The Tudors, etc.

I liked the ending. They left it open to either be a series ender or to continue into a new season, which unfortunately never happened.

i liked it as well. Considering that they tried to straddle a difficult fence, they did a very nice job with the ending.

Cool. What about V? Good wrap up?

I thought the V finale was great but it didn't wrap up at all. It made me really want another season. One thing about the show, I liked it at first but was getting kinda bored with it as it became more soap opera-ish. They went on a brief hiatus and made some changes in the production crew and it came back much leaner and meaner with a more focused sci-fi thriller feel. I'm glad I didn't give up on it and think it's worth a watch.

I might have to keep a few episodes of Firefly to check out Christina Hendricks though.
gurantee you will like that episode
Don't make guarantees! It says 2 episodes...Trash and Our Miss Reynolds.

I have it on my office DVR and I don't record much on it. I'll probably keep them for a while, maybe I'll change my opinion. Maybe I need to smoke a little before the next episode.
Good Lord Almighty. How could you people almost let me miss that. Night and day from Mad Men but I'd have a tough time deciding between the two. Hot as hell and a really a good actress. And a slight buzz does wonders for the show too...

Careful man, it grows on you. Too much more and next thing you know you'll be trying to decide if you prefer Angel or Spike.

That was a good episoede. No western. Hot Christina Hendricks. Some mystery. Some actual science fiction at the end. Funniest episode too.

For the record, it's entirely possible to be a fan of Firefly and not the rest of Whedon's TV work.

And I think it's crazy that he was a screenplay writer for Toy Story.

Read the Wiki on this show and it's sounds horrible. Is it really worth watching?
For a show that was cancelled after Fox absolutely screwed the series and only had 11 episodes aired (out of order mind you), it is almost impossible for it to be more loved. The next episode Jaynestown is one of the worst in the run, but if you make it through that, you will see one of the best in Out of Gas ( which may not mean as much to you since you missed the critical 2 hour pilot).

Jaynestown is probably the low point of the series (all 14 episodes) but I really like the character Jayne so I am forgiving of it (as I am apparently forgiving of all things Firefly), and it's a catchy tune too.

Did you read this thread too?
yeah. Figured I would download the first episode and see what I thought.
Obviously I'm a fan but I can completely understand why others would not be. It is a character and dialogue driven show not a sci-fi extravaganza I don't think it can be fairly judged on a single episode. The entire run is 14 episodes that isn't a big commitment even if you end up hating it. Jump in and have fun with it.
