First 5 draft picks were busts (1 Viewer)

The old cliche is "You can't win your league in the 1st/2nd/3rd (cliche varies) rounds of the draft, but you can lose it"

Despite this, I've heard of a number of people, including Bloom in this week's podcast, mention that they are still faring well despite a number of injuries or busts in the early rounds.

I wonder how many other people find themselves in this situation and what they attribute their, perhaps unexpected, success to.

FWIW, I went: SJax, Edwards, Colston, McGahee & Lewis and all have done little for me. It was guys that I took in the middle to late rounds, trades and WW pickups that have steered me this far into the playoffs.

It happens. I went Sjax, TJ Housh, Holmes and Bush in rounds 1-4 of a keeper league. Clinched a WC and advanced to the semis with a combo of Rogers, Forte, Turner, Megatron, Berrain and Walter. I'll keep you guys posted on my progress :D

Well, I took Tomlinson and Wayne...and am still the #1 team in my league.

Helps to have Turner and DeAngelo (and road the fatdale TD train earlier in the year)

I went S. Jackson, R. Wayne, and Plaxico Burress in the first 3 rounds. I made it and shouldn't have. Mostly due to Thomas Jones and Chris Johnson.

I took:

LT

AJ

Boldin

Selvin Young (still can't believe this :bag: )

Calvin Johnson

Forte

Cutler

DeAngelo Williams

VJax

Gage

Reggie Williams

Campbell

Olsen

Jaguars

McMichael

Jeff Reed

Steve Slaton

Sitting at 11-3. Alot of luck with guys staying mostly healthly, and grabbing Slaton late.

Go on, tell 'em what you did with Forte and VJax!See you in the final :bag:

1. S.Jax

2. E.Graham

3. C.Palmer

4. S.Smith

5. Cotchery

Got lucky in drafting Forte, Pitt D, Cooley later on. Early pickup of Rodgers. Made a good trade. Ended up 10-3 and a bye as #2 seed. Got pretty lucky all year in h-2-h.

That is an absurd 5th - 8th round. Nicely done!

I have won my division in a 12 team keep 2 players league and am still alive in the playoffs despite starting with:

Brady (keeper)

TO (keeper)

J. Lewis (1st round pick)

Grant (2nd round pick)

I was able to draft Gonzalez in the 3rd, Chris Johnson in the 10th, Slaton in the 12th, and got Warner off the waiver wire the day after the draft when the Cards announced he would be the starter. This has been the best draft I have had in 8 years due to the late round picks of CJ and Slaton, and the Warner addition. All have been starting for me all season and have been huge for me. Plus, it looks like I will be able to keep CJ, and Slaton for next year.

I drafted a WR for the first time ever in the 1st round, then for some reason followed it up with another WR, then took two aging RB's. Pretty much the worst start of a draft ever.

1.09 Wayne, Reggie IND WR

2.02 Owens, Terrell DAL WR

3.09 McGahee, Willis BAL RB

4.02 James, Edgerrin ARI RB

10-team keeper league. I have a 8-6 record, #3 playoff seed, 1st in total points. Mainly because of these picks:

5.09 White, LenDale TEN RB

6.02 Jennings, Greg GBP WR

7.09 Slaton, Steve HOU RB ®

12.02 Warner, Kurt ARI QB

13.09 Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB

1 - Barber

2 - TO

3 - Brees

4 - Turner

5 - Holmes

Boldin went one stinking pick before I took Holmes and I took Thomas Jones in round 6. If I had got Boldin it would have been an incredible draft. I passed up Jennings, Roddy White and Hines Ward to take Holmes, for some reason.

The top 4 got me through the first half at 7-1, but now Brees is the only one I have left. Currently at 10-3 with 1st round bye last week.

picked 8th got r. moss came back with b. edwards  .......then jacobs, witten, white, bowe, cj3, finished with 8-5 record.

Traded them to you for Portis :bag: In my defense, I feared the Grossman effect and the rookie wall. And Portis' 3nd degree MCL sprain was announced 2 days later.

How did you get Turner and Megatron AFTER the 4th round in a keeper league?Or were they your keepers? To which I am going to say, who throws SJax back?

Portis(keeper)

Wayne 1st round

Housh 2nd round

no 3rd and 4th round because they were traded last year

Selvin 5th round.

12 team league 1 keeper each. end the regular season 6-7 with the 7th overall playoff spot, but was the 2nd highest scoring team in the league. In the semi this week.

1. Addai (keeper)

2. Calvin

3. Andre

4. KSMith

5. Ward

Best record and most points overall a 16 team league, PPR.

traded Ward for JStew midseason, picked up Mewlede, oh yeah and picked Warner right before the season started and Breaston a little later.

Addai sucks.

16 team redraft. I picked second. My first 8 picks:

1.2 Peterson

2.15 Holt

3.2 Chad Johnson

4.15 Gates

5.2 Cotchery

6.15 Vince Young

7.2 Mendenhall

8.15 Norwood

Peterson has been great, Gates was very good the first half of the season, and Cotchery has had mixed results... but that is overall a pretty bad first 8 picks, which was supposed to yield starters at QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, and TE.

Rivers at 9.2, good waiver moves, and a trade for AJ has me at 9-5 and in the final 4 of the playoffs.

My first 3 were Moss, LJ, and PLax! :coffee:

I would like to thank CJ3, LunchPale, Slaton, and Rivers for coming out.

1. Brady

2. LJ

3. Grant (semi-bust)

4. Holt

5. Welker (slight bust due to 1 TD)

1st place in a 12 team league, H2H matchups got me there. Middle of the pack in points thanks to:

6. Boldin

7. Warner

9. S. Moss

18. Pierre Thomas

What's most amazing to me is that this is a start 2 QB league and I rolled the likes of JT O'Sullivan, Sage Rosenfels, and Empty (seriously, people hoard QBs and there wasn't an available starting QB a few times) with Warner all season after Brady's injury.

Makes up for my primary league where I had highest points by far and snuck into the last playoff seed with a 7-7 record.
