Being from Boston and seeing Matt Ryan for many years, I don't see how he will be successful in the NFL. I hope I'm wrong, but I see Atlanta in a world of hurt if they draft him that high and pay him the kind of money it would cost.

It'll come back. I just got bored with it for now. The avatar comes from the novel The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress and the brass cannon comes from a joke one character tells. A cleaner whose job it was to polish a brass cannon outside a courthouse, eventually saves enough money to by his own brass cannon and go into business for himself... TANSTAAFL! stands for "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch", a maxim frequently used in the book.The point being, if a guy can't make money polishing a cannon in his own business, why should we pay him to do it as a government job?

Just curious why you think Harvey makes a good bookend to Cole? Both guys are what, 260? Wouldn't that leave them rather vulnerable to getting overpowered? A nice passrush combo to be sure. But it seems to me thats asking to get run all over.
And I think Brutis got it right. Everyone mocks a WR to Dallas. Last time it happened was Alvin Harper. Not very likely to happen this year. Its an organizational thing. The Talib pick is spot on though.

Still don't know about McFadden and the Jets - even though it's on half the mocks I read.
I'm just not sure where he fits right now - I'm split between Oakland (which has bigger needs) and him potentially *shock* dropping a bit further.
The Jets just have bigger needs on the Oline and in the D to go with - as good as he is - a guy who would be a luxury pick. They don't need a RB. They need to replace Jason kendall. They need someone to put pressure on the Qb - they might LIKE McFadden. But they don't need him the way they do the other things.

Well Trent Cole is about 270, and has been putting on weight ever since he was drafted. He is actually very good against the run. So I am not worried about him being overpowered at all. Harvey is pretty light right now, and would have to hit the weight room like Cole has.The Eagles took DE Victor Abiamiri in the second round last year, and he is a pretty big guy. So I think they already have a big LDE on the roster. They just simply need another guy in the mix. The Eagles love to rotate defensive lineman constantly, and they need at least 4 good ends on the team. Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, and Jerome McDougle could all be outta here, and that opens up 2-3 roster spots at DE. Knowing that the Eagles prioritize lineman they will almost certainly draft one high, or sign a big time free agent(Terrell Suggs maybe).As far as the Cowboys going for a first round receiver. I don't know about past mocks, but I feel they need one now. Terry Glenn could be retiring, and T.O. is in the final of his contract. It seems apparent that with two first round picks they can address a receiver, and their secondary.

I understand not showing trades in a mock but I would expect the Patriots to try and trade down from the #7.... maybe someone would want to move up to take McFadden there.. but I don't think outside LB is a need of theirs with R.Colvin, Vrable and A.Thomas there.

I really like it. You have some picks in there that seem on par with everything else and then some of picks that are a bit different which I like.I like Baltimore taking a QB (especially Brohm). If your scenario plays out like this then I would love to see the Bills give Baltimore their 3rd rounder back to move up ahead of Cincy to take Ellis. If Ellis does fall that far it would be perfect. Buffalo, Cincy and N.O. would not pick Brohm so the Ravens would know they could get him at 11. Ellis would be a great fit for the Bills D and would be the DT we always wanted. We could get a really good WR in the 2nd round still with all these decent WR's this year. I would absolutely love it if that happened!But good mock. Overall, I do think there will be more RB's taken in the 1st. At least one of either Jones or Stewart. That, and I'm not completely sold on Manningham being a 1st rounder.

This is only my first mock, and it's very early. I plan on making two more before the draft, and I am sure it will look a lot different. My take on the RBs so far was that there just were no teams that really need a RB. I am sure some moves will be made in the next month that will change that though.

See the reason I went Gholston is his talent. I think he is a top ten pick that is hard to pass up. I do realize that ILB appears to be a much bigger need, but there really are none available that high. I also believe that Vrabel, and Thomas can move inside. They have both done it before, and been successful at it. I also think CB is a big need, but I think they may address that in free agency.

All I'll say is that there's a difference between picking who you think would be best for a team to take and picking who you think the organization actually will take. Organizations have philosophies about drafting. Philly's tends to be taking linemen early. I'm sure you're aware of that. One of Dallas' philosophies is not taking WRs in the first. Not saying that philosophies are hard and fast. But mocking against them seems like a recepeit for inaccuracy.

I am not even sure who has taken Jeff Ireland's place as the director of scouting. Could there possibly be a new philosophy with this change?

As of yet, no one has taken Ireland's place. Now, Tom Ciskowski has been lead college scout. And he's still in place. He's been most often discussed as replacing Ireland. But when Ireland left, the comments from Jones were that they might not even replace Ireland. Just let the college scouts do their thing and the pro scouts do theirs. Ireland kind of oversaw the whole thing.But both Jones and Wade have commented publicly about taking WRs early. When the 2 biggest powers in the organization have made comments about doing something, especially when that comment matches up with historical action, its a good bet that they mean it. I believe it was Jones who said that they'd like to fill WR needs through either FA or trade. So yes, they acknowledge they have a need here. But it gets filled through other means.As mentioned earlier, Alvin Harper was the last WR Dallas took in the first. He was in the early 90s, the Jimmy Johnson years. Actually, the last offensive player the Boys took in the first was TE David LaFleur in the late 90s. The entire millenium has seen Dallas take only defensive players in the first.Not saying Dallas won't break trends. Maybe they feel that with 2 firsts, they can play a little.
