Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (2 Viewers)

I'm in a suburb of LA, CA.

A Five Guys opened up (inexplicably) in the same shopping complex as an In-n-Out.

Despite the long llne and full dining room in the newly-built 5 guys, i decided i'd check it out, see what the fuss was about, within 2 weeks of the opening. Loved the myriad options for toppings. Dug the fries. Not bad. The deal breaker was i came out of that place spending $14 for a hamburger, fries, and drink. Really??

I hit up In-n-Out once a week, as i'm a single guy who doesn't cook. I've never left there speding more than $7 for a comparable meal. When i went to In-n-Out last week, the drive-thru was packed(it's always atleast 8-10 cars long, but this time 15+), so i decided to walk-in the restaurant and order. Line too long, Dining room full. So i thought i'd go ahead and walk over to 5 guys and bite the bullet ($$). Here it was only a year later, i walk into 5 guys, NO LINE, ONLY TWO PEOPLE IN THE DINING ROOM.

Not sure how much longer before that location is forced to close down. Genius move, or more likely arrogant move on their part. Opening a restaurant next door to IN-n-Out..
Sorry, but you're not getting a comparable meal from In-n-Out. You get a ton more food from 5 guys, both in volume and calorie count. Not that you actually need that much food in one sitting, but you're certainly getting significantly more.
They both serve burgers, fries, and a drink. Seems like they are very comparable.

Because one charges double for the same meal is where the comparability breaks down.

How much does INO charge for bacon and sautéed mushrooms on your hot dog?

I honestly hope the Five Guys makes it, but the location seems very weird.

So, a McDondalds hamburger, value menu fries and small coke are comparable to a Fuddrucker's 1lb bacon cheddar burger, unlimited fries and chocolate shake?

Are all In-n-Out regulars completely irrational?

You would be, too, if you subsisted on bland fries and paper-thin meat patties shoved inside of a horrible bun. Their brains crave fat and flavor.

Do you own a 5G franchise?

The 5G here is surrounded by all kinds of other options too, and does just fine.

Within a half mile of 5G here, there's a Firehouse, local Italian place, Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, BW3, Chick Fil A, McD's, Bob Evans, Golden Corral, Dickies, local Mexican place, Chipotle, Moe's, Arosto Pizza, Jersey Mike's, Subway (next door), O'Charley's, some other steakhouse chain I forgot the name of, Ruby Tuesday's. Also about 4 little frozen yogurt things.

Most either adjacent to the same Target parking lot or no more than a couple hundred yard trip down the main road.

They do fine.

Odd as it seems, they seem to be a fairly unique market.

If you want a very solid burger and great fries without having to bother with waiting 20 minutes and tipping someone, it's the only place here outside of Cookout (and it's an order of magnitude better than Cookout in terms of quality).

I know a lot of cities might have some comparable Mom 'n Pop options for burgers of the same quality and price, but there's literally only one here. It's across town, close to downtown. Parking sucks and they don't take cards. Not a great competitor, even if you feel like sitting, waiting, and tipping.

In many markets (like mine), 5G's job is very simple. Just be better than fast food.

until you get your order.

I've never waited more than 12 minutes in Vegas and the line is almost always out the door. I marvel each time on how they process so many orders so quickly.

It takes 5-6 minutes at 5G with no one there. Half full at lunch is the best I've ever seen a 5G. Probably because customers drop dead from eating the 3 servings of fries you get when you order a small.

Your choices sound like exactly like mine. No one cooks anymore

sounds like another pro for Five Guys compared to In N Out. No lines!
Have you had In N out? I never have so I can't compare but I have a feeling that if one opened up by the Five Guys by me that the In N Out would crush it.

It was cheaper than buying lunch there, so I just went ahead and opened one up.

So I went today and got a tasty burger from the local chain no one not in Charlotte has heard of. Double cheese burger 4 bucks and change. Best burger in town IMO. I guess because it's cheaper it wasn't inedible when I got it home ten minutes later. Still juicy and hot.

10 cars in the drive thru, no big deal... Only like 20 minutes give or take.
#1 I thought you were a New Yorker

#2 you have drive through In N Out near you?

if yes to 1 and no to 2, then not sure you're qualified to comment given that every recent comment has talked about how packed the In N Out always is and how dead/empty the Five Guys always is.

I was kidding, piggybacking off of LABroncos anti FG post. I would never wait 20 minutes at any drive through...

Good posting. Most anywhere a 5G's opens up, theyre going to have a decent amount of competition as I cant recall ever seeing one in the middle of nowhere. The "burger specialty" market is fairly unique as you arent getting a burger better than 5G's anywhere where you dont have to tip - for most people/locales - and sometimes Id rather have a greasy toppings stacked 5G's double chee than a medium rare "insert style" burger at a restaurant anyway, depends on my mood.

Now as for opening up a 5G's near an In N Out like someone posted earlier, that's just dumb. Ive never had INO so I cant know for sure if the INO supporters are completely brainwashed by whatever they inject into their food, but it the food quality is even arguable, INO being far cheaper is where most of the herd will flock regardless. After all, its fast food.

I don't know where $14 comes from either.

I just did the online order, regular cheeseburger (2 patties) & little fries (prob bigger than an extra large at INO) = $9.78. This is a gigantic meal that would leave most people very full... They'll give you a cup for water, and if you're that concerned about the $2, you can use it for soda.

Lets put money aside here... Lets just pretend that either meal was free, would anyone still chose INO over FG?

change the little fries to a regular and add a soda and thats $14. I love FGs but dont be ignorant about the prices. Its not cheap fast food.

regular fries aren't made for one person to eat they are made for 2-3 people.

FG is too expensive for the Super Size crowd I guess.

I'm sure there's an All You Can Eat place down the block.

That's like having your regular size soda be enough for 2-3 people.

Wife and I made made it for $17 today (Regular CB, Little CB, Large Fry to split). Probably should've just stuck with splitting a regular fry.

Not too bad.

Plus ordering online was a breeze. Just strolled right in like I owned the place, past all the poor souls in line, to pick up the food.

yes i realize that. The country is obese for a reason. But people are acting all shocked that people are spending $14. "I dont know where $14comes from". Thats where it comes from.

Bacon Cheeseburger with everything and regular fries is around 1800 calories... and that's assuming you eat the fries plain and don't drink soda too.

That's like having your regular size soda be enough for 2-3 people.
according to coke, a serving size is 8 oz, so maybe it is.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but the menu board explicitly says (or at least used to) that regular fries serves 2-3 people.

ETA: Image searches of Five Guys meny boards says shows I am wrong, they dont explicitly say that. Maybe the cashier told me...

The little fries are equivalent to a large anywhere else...

They give you a large cup (same one used for the large fries) without hesitation if you ask for it... I drink the water anyways.

I walk out under $10 every time... For the wife and me its $13 for burgers & $4.5 for fries.... $19 with tax and that leaves us with more fries then we can eat.

Some of you are being willfully stupid. A 'regular' at 5G is a double anywhere else. The larger sized fry at 5G is enough for 2-3. If those items plus drink are $14 that's at least 1.5 times more food than a fast food place. Probably 2 times.

So if you rob them of soda, you can keep it under $10.
I actually got kicked out of a 5G's because a manager/assistant manager noticed I was coming in and bringing in my previously used 5G's soda pop cup for a refill. I dont know if she was looking for a promotion or what, but I was like "damn, you care that much about your fountain drinks"

Rud can we get a permanent hyperlink in here for people who think Five Guys is too expensive to show them where the closest Golden Corral is to them? TIA

Its not cheap fast food.
regular fries aren't made for one person to eat they are made for 2-3 people.
yes i realize that.
We've been thru this. You dont order the soda, you get the water cup for free and then if you wish, you drink that mother ####ing soda as much as you want in your "water cup"

Good jello there.

:lmao:

This is a shtick, right?

Nope, no lie.

I was traveling once a week for school at that time, this was 2-3 yrs ago. Got my lunch a couple times at that 5G's on the way to school or back, whichever. I kept my cup I guess because why not for a free drink next week, and I figured why not keep it and get a free refill next week when I might not get lunch their on my way in case im not in the mood. But yeah, this "manager" called me out and basically said she had seen me come into 5G's and just fill up and refill without buying anything, bounce after a couple times (which was true, but seriously, you watch #### that close?!). I just threw my cup in the garbage and told her I didnt realize fountain drinks had reached the price of getting a promotion, good luck, you must be on the fast track!

And you are proud to tell that story as the manager being the #####?

Somewhat, but mostly because of people who think they are on the "fast food freeway" to a promotion by clipping me because I want a free soda pop that I was overcharged for in the first place.

I'd like to think the managers of an establish like that are doing more than being fountain drink gestapos.

How many days a week do you fatties eat out? The $4 extra at 5G is killing your wallets so I'm guessing you're eating out no less than 7 days a week.
