Flutie retiring (1 Viewer)

Should be interesting to see if the Pats bring in a vet, or if they're willing to have Cassel as the backup going into the year.

I hope they make Cassell #2. He doesn't have a lot of experience, but a lot of talent and poise. I think he could handle it no problem.

I think they need to bring in a vet to push Cassell - he's shwon flashes, but still extremely inexperienced.Fiedler isn't a bad thought.

That boy had heart. Always good for a comeback win and one win as a starter in the last few years. We went down to SD 2 or 3 years ago to watch them play the Viqueens. It seemed the whole parking lot was purple, it was disgusting. Then after LT opened up the scoring, Flutie throws for 2 TDs and runs for 2. It was amazing to watch him play at 40 or so and have so much fun. I doubt we'll see him in Canton but I'll always remember his career.

Perhaps you're right. I just think Cassell has the talent, and I'd like to see him get a shot - at least a shot to get one step closer. Not that he's gonna take over any time soon.As for Flutie, I would have like to have seen him get the QB coaching spot for the Pats. He says he wants nothing to do with coaching, and will be working college games for ESPN next season.

BC @ Miami....Hail Mary..... one of the greatest moments in sports.
Even though I know very little about college football, I like to tell college football fans that this is easily the best moment ever in college ball. This drives them into a frenzy every time.

I also liked the Stanford Band getting run over....Ahhhh, Flutie. We'll miss you. Not FF-wise of course.

But it was fun to see his little head popping up over linemen as he scrambled. :)

Why would it drive them into a frenzy? It is easily one of the Top 10 and should at least get serious consideration as the best from any serious college football fan.

I liked it when Ditka traded him to the Pats, only to lose to Flutie a few weeks later. Ditka also suffered a heart attack that year, not sure if it was caused by losing to a player he just traded for a 4th round pick.

I don't know. Why would you follow college football in the first place?

Off topic here, but I just saw Kicking and Screaming with Will Ferrell. Ditka's war with Robert Duvall is absolutely hilarious. Laughing out loud all by myself!

Most overrated player in the history of professional sports?
Totally disagree with this statement. Flutie was an amazing CFL player. He may viewed by many as a guy that could never make it in the NFL which is partly true, but it should not take away from how great his career was in the CFL.

Maybe, until M. Vick retires.

*One of the best college QBs I have ever seen. As exciting as there was. You always got your dollars worth of entertainment when he was on the field. He brought the BC program back from the dead and lead them to wins against Bama, Penn St and Miami as well as a Cotton Bowl win and a #4 ranking.

*An up and down NFL career. Often it didn't look pretty but you can't argue with the won-lost results. He was the type of guy who would look bad for three quarters than find a way to win it in the fourth.

*The only time he really got a shot in the NFL was with Buffalo. He was somewhat blackballed early in his career because he was seen as a scab. Ray Berry with the Pats never forgave him for that and that was a big reason he didn't stick with them when he should have.

*Flutie is one of the greatest athletes I have ever seen. I have met him a few times and am always amazed by how small he is. It's really unbelievable he did what he did with his size. Athletically he's good at everything as he also gets it done on the hoop court and on the ice.

*I can't believe anyone would think of him as a Hall-of-Famer. Great guy to root for but he's not even close to Canton. The CFL and NCAA H-O-F are totally different stories.

As for the Pats I'm actually glad he retired. I like the guy but wasn't convinced he had anything left. While I like Cassell and think he's the definite backup of the future there's no way the Pats can hand over that job to him right now just in case he's not ready. They need an experienced veteran for one more year to let Cassell develop. A guy like Fiedler would make sense. Add in a veteran, let Cassell develop, stick Bramlett on the practice squad and they'll be in great shape at QB for years to come.

I'd like to see an analysis of Fluties career and statistics. I know he gathered most of his career stats in the CFL, but wasn't Warren Moon recently admitted to the HOF based on stats in the CFL?

Depends who you were rooting for that day. :bag: Every year I start to not hate Flutie, and then college football starts and they show that replay 3 or 4 times a day and I remember to hate him again. :wall:
