FoodSaver Vacuum Sealing System (1 Viewer)

Anyone have experience with these? Looking for one as a gift for my dad.

Is there a real difference between the manual and automatic ($50+ more expensive) sealers? Is the automatic worth it?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

If he is old enough, he could use it to wrap his balls up tight and snug. I think the plastic also comes in Christmas colors, so that would be a plus.

Much like gym equipment, everyone I know that has one of these never used them after the first couple months.

I have had one of these for years and use it to store/freeze food we buy in bulk. We have the auto. Works great.

I suspect as much too. The old man asked for one on his letter to Santa this year. But, he does live off the beaten path and he may be looking to buy bulk as he and his wife are getting older. He freezes a lot of venison too. He's got deer meat in one of his freezers that he shot in 1982!

This is a great idea for him, then. Meat in a freezer will last much longer after using one of these.

Manual is better than auto, in my opinion.

I think this may be true in many cases. Some may say the automated mechanisms just add something else to break, etc.

Can you elaborate a little on your reasons why manual is better? I'm trying to see if the extra $50 or $60 is worth getting the auto.

The one I have shuts off when the air is sucked out of the bag and then seals the bag. Is that what is meant by "automatic"? It works much better on dry food than meet with some juice as the juice gets sucked up into the vaccuum.

I think the automatic units start the vacuum process when a bag is inserted and detected, where the manual you put the bag in and then push a button to start the vacuum process. I could be wrong but that's how I understand it.

I use ours more now that we bought a box of pre-made bags so we don't have to #### around cutting and sealing from the roll.

Yes. And it has recognition problems

Like any gadget they are only good if you use them. My wife bought a top of the line one 5 years ago. We used it all the time for the first couple of months, then once a week, then once a month. Now it is sitting in our closet with dust all over it. Have not had it out in over a year.

I have one and use it for 1 primary thing. In early summer Copper River/Wild Alaskan Salmon prices drop below $10/lb. Love Copper River salmon - and not a fan of the salmon you can buy "fresh" after summer - and will not eat farmed salmon at all. Use the foodsaver to freeze enough so that we can have one salmon meal per week from the end of summer till the following June. It's paid for itself many x over. I have a simple "manual one" that I bought at Costco a long time ago.
