Footballguys Interactive Magazine - The Scoop (1 Viewer)

Hi Folks,

Wanted to give you an update and let you know exactly where we are on the Footballguys Interactive Magazine. It's changed significantly since we first started talking about it. Here's the scoop.

First thing. And it's a big one. You'll notice the name is not the Footballguys Interactive iPad Magazine any longer. That's not a coincidence.

We've made the decision to release this content as a web subscription sold by Footballguys instead of the iTunes Store. It'll be similar to the Footballguys Insider Subscription. It's still $4.99. But the difference is that we redesigned it so that it will look great not just on the iPad (it does) and not just Android tablets (it does), but also on laptop and desktop computers. We say it's not meant for smart phones but I have to say that much of it looks good on my Android phone (although if you complain about it not looking good on your phone, the answer is it's not meant for smart phones).

Bottom line is we've decided to make the Footballguys Magazine available to a much bigger group of people than just the folks that own iPads as we'd originally intended. And to make sure we didn't water down the iPad user experience that does have the cool swipeable technology stuff the iPad offers, there are actually two versions of the subscription. One that is optimized for the iPad. The other that is for Android tablets, and desktop / laptop computers.

I'd be lying if I said we came to this decision all on our own. The reality is that the Apple / iTunes store had a good bit to do with it. Apple didn't like some of the things we had in the app that made it easy for us to have multiple versions of this. They rejected our initial app and gave us a pretty severe list of changes we had to make in order to comply with their system. We made the decision to go a different direction and offer it as a web subscription.

The downside is that we won't be in the iTunes store. That's a pretty big thing as if something sells well in the iTunes store, it can see really nice exposure. And everyone we've demoed this to has been blown away so I feel good that it would have sold well there. But the reality is we decided not to play within the Apple framework and instead open the app up to everyone.

Second thing. For 2012, we've decided to make the Footballguys Interactive Magazine part of the Footballguys Insider Subscription If you purchase the Insider for this year, you'll receive access to the Interactive Magazine free of charge. Note that this is for 2012 only. For the guys that purchase a multi year subscription, 2012 is the only year we're promising the Magazine will be included. That may change, but for right now, that's where we are.

Third thing. For people that buy the Magazine only, they can upgrade to the full Insider Subscription at a later date and receive credit of $4.99 towards the price of a Footballguys Insider subscription. We know that when the subscriber wall goes up next week and much of the Footballguys content becomes for Insider subscribers only, there are still lots of people that want to see at least some of the content. The Magazine won't have nearly as much content or as much detail as the Insider subscription. We want the people that purchase the Insider to have an advantage over the Magazine and they will by having full access to everything. Plus features like the Draft Dominator that is only available on the Insider. But it will be a way for people to try some of the pay content out and then hopefully like what they see enough to upgrade to the full Insider. Remember that the Magazine content only runs through the preseason.

So that's where we are. Doug and Keith and David are putting the final touches on getting it ready for sale. Hopefully it'll be ready for download tonight. You know how tech things go though so it's still possible it might be tomorrow. We're shooting for tonight though.

Thanks for your patience. And I hope you guys like the changes we made making it available on laptops and desktops as well as iPad and Android tablets. I think you're going to like this a lot.

And thanks to all the FBG Staffers that have been killing themselves on this. Very proud of our guys here.

J

I know you said it looks ok on a phone. Is it an app or am I just going to follow a link to get to it. Will it be different than the PC link?

TIA.

Hi belljr,Yes, you can follow the same link that is for the pc. Again though, don't buy it just for viewing on your phone. Let anything you get on the phone be a bonus.J

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but there's a reason that everything has an app (as opposed to a web app). Native apps typically look better and run much faster than their web counterparts. For example, most people that use Facebook or Twitter on their tablet do so via apps, not their web browser, because its a better experience. (Ironically the FB app is really not much more than a glorified web browser, which is why its kind of slow, and why FB is furiously working to re-write it as a native app, but I digress.)

I'm still going to subscribe (I have for many years.) but FootballGuys has always had a lot of pre-season content. Pointing my web browser at part of that content and calling it a "magazine" and then pointing it other content and calling it "the subscription" doesn't entirely make sense to me.

I don't know. I'll check it out sometime soon. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Sammy. I hope you'll give it a try and let us know. But you're exactly right, it's online content through your browser - no bones about that. But that's essentially what all the apps are that have dynamic content. I don't disagree that there are some style advantages to having it as an app, and we hope to have that for next season. But this season, we made the best with the cards we had. I actually love the fact we're able to open it up to all the non iPad guys. I love my iPad, but I know there are lots of people out there that don't have one. J

First piece of feedback.

I would LOVE to be able to have more than one customized league profile and be able to save/switch between them. I can't be the only one in multiple leagues right?

We decided early on to add this feature next year. The problem with saving all of the multiple leagues is that some users can be confused as to what the info is telling them (ie that league choice has to always be front and center). This sounds like a trivial add, but it's actually MULTIPLE times harder to program to deal with unlimited (or a large number of possible configurations). We get it though that people want this. It's on our enhancement list as well.

I probably won't use the right terminology for this question but... can an iPad "cache" data so you can view the info offline? I'm connected most of the time while using my iPad so I'm buying this regardless. It's just that my league usually drafts at a bar with no wifi, and I'd love to be able to take advantage of the draft mode.

Right now the answer is that you have to be connected to the internet. We're working on caching options. But right now, you need to be connected.J

It currently does not support caching. This is on the Enhancement list though so we are hoping we can have this in this sometime during the preseason. Another non-trivial add though that got scrubbed at the last minute when we had to change gears when Apple wasn't willing to approve the app as designed.

Thanks David, makes sense.

Something else I just realized though. I don't have a 3G iPad and my draft location has no wifi. I was hoping to be able to use draft mode on my ipad but it doesn't look like I can.

This is the caching issue that was asked earlier. It's on our to do list here. We know people need/want this. It's tricky though as the app has 3,000 pages of content and a lot of them use different things from our databases that are constantly being updated (especially in late August)

It would be awesome if it pulled in the league info I already have in my subscriber section. But ####### A what a start for this product. Very cool so far. You guys are awesome.

My league has bonus points for Lenght of TDs, and chance of adding that?

Really awesome so far guys, fantastic job.

Wish it was on an app, but I'll take the browser version for now, excellent work!

This is only true if you hire really crappy web guys to build your web apps. There's all kinds of magic you can use to make web apps look and feel native. I'd argue that this type of app is far more suited to be a web app than native anyways, since (unless I've missed something) it requires none of the advantages of creating a native app. As often as not, the decision to go with a native app has more to do with leveraging the distribution medium of an app store to reach a new audience than anything else. It's a shame that the HTML5 local storage goodies weren't used here so that the magazine content could be viewed offline.Joe/David: I'm curious as to why this much effort was put into creating a "sub-site/magazine" with tablet compatibility in mind instead of just making the site itself responsive, and compatible with both tablets & mobiles. Are there any plans to make the site more mobile/tablet friendly?

Where in the magazine is the custom league scoring used?

Just for fun I put in 4 starting QBs and expected to see the rankings load up with QB at the front, but it still looks like it's just giving standard rankings.

Also, both the positional writeups and projections links are giving me blank pages with an Error on Page message in the lower left corner of the browser. This is on IE 8.

Also, is there a chance you can create another category for combined wr/te, my league does not use te as a sep category.... I'd like to see where gronk and company stack v Calvin and co

I agree and disagree. You can do some great things with HTML5 (I'm creating an HTML5 app now.) That being said, I am struggling to think of web apps that were as slick or fast as their native counterparts.I do agree that what is being offered doesn't really require a native app. When I heard "Football Guys Magazine iPad app" repeated over-and-over I was thinking:- Slick native presentation (something along the lines of Flipboard or Zinio.)- A very fast app.- Offline mode as stated previously. (Sync all the data locally. If you're online it pulls the latest, if you're offline it looks at the last data sync.)If all the above is off the table, then an app doesn't really buy you anything.I also agree that going forward, I'd prefer to see the FBG site itself become more tablet friendly than another magazine.

If you haven't already, check out the LinkedIn app. Nothing past the login and account selection screen is native. There are some slight differences, for sure, but the vast majority of users would have no idea it's not native.

Few things don't seem to work in my GFs iPad1

Depth charts error out.

Customization fields for team number / roster size are too small to see content

Draft mode seems a little buggy/laggy

love positional writeups.

Like draft mode: wish it was smoother and had hotlinked names

Seems pretty plain design-wise... But is an effective means of displaying information.

Thanks icon. We'll look at those. And yes, the design is definitely more plain and functional. We wanted to get something out there that worked like wanted and then we can start prettying it up. J

Just change TE to zero and it does this
My league has the same setup. I put the TE value at 0 and I still have two separate rankings for TE and WR when I look at the rankings. Any help or suggestions. I love it so far. Thanks for all your hard work on this one.

The rankings section has them separate. However, when I am in draft mode they are combined. Is this how it will remain? And one other question. Percy Harvin jumps to the number 3 spot for WR/TE in draft mode, how can this be?

It should be available real soon. Was hoping that it might be tonight, but as the night gets later, tomorrow is looking more like it. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see details on how non-subscribers can purchase the magazine in tomorrow morning's daily email update.Update - now available! http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2012/12magazine.php

Let me just say as a subscriber that it makes me very happy that this was included in my subscription. I would personally like to see subscribers continue to get the content you put out in every form you provide it. Thanks, guys!

my 2 cents...

as an iPad user (and FBG subscriber for years), so far I've only found a single thing in this online magazine that I would use instead of going to the full web site. That's Draft Mode. Nice little way to have a digital cheatsheet that you can check off the players that go off the board as well as the players you draft. Nice, simple interface.

One question/request though...it's always set to David's projections. Any way to chose someone else's or, better yet, let me mix the 4 projections in whatever percentage I want a la Projection Dominator? Would be a sweet (and seeminly simple enough) tweak to an already cool feature in this web app.

thanks

What's the difference between this mag and the site content? I'm not seeing it.

And draft mode is just a cheat sheet based on dodd's projections and how you can enter bits of your scoring system? I see no best value or overall rankings?

I'm a little disappointed, but admittedly haven't given it a full try yet. Offline use would be huge though, otherwise it's kind of just the site.

So you ignored what improvements or features your customer wanted/asked about and announced that you'd instead be creating an amazing, revolutionary Ipad Magazine App.

You announced all this without ever having confirmation that it would be accepted by Apple.

You've now had to save face and essentially give it away for free this year after hyping it up massively for the last 6 weeks.

Am I correct so far?

In summary, you'v essentially ignored features your customers have been asking for for a while and then offered them an updated web format for your content? In 2012 people shouldn't really be expected to pay extra on top of a $30 subscription to have content displayed in a modern format.

Thanks, but not for me.

While this post is pretty harsh, I have to agree that's what it feels like happened here. This is more of a modernization of the current subscriber content than anything else, but that's only good until the season starts. Then we're back to the same old thing. It's certainly not a magazine.

This year. And only because the app didnt get approved. Next year you will and based on the current iteration its not really added content, especially because you need to stay on the internet and it isnt truly optimized for a tablet. You might as well lug your laptop around and use DD. I was hoping to use my ipad for all my drafts this year. I still will, but this isnt as good as expected and without the offline mode it might end up useless to me and many others.

The format of this and even the DD at this point looks/feels old. I bought a subscription this year to support the site innovating into the app world. Hopefully there are improvements before august.

Does this mean that next year certain strategy articles that were traditionally pre-season subscriber content (Defense by Committee, From the Gut, Coaching Philosophy changes, etc) will now only be available if you pay $5 for the app? Or is content like this going to be available by the traditional method of having it posted to the site for subscribers?

Hi Leeroy,Nothing different in a big way is planned before August for the site. We do have a money back guarantee though as we don't want anyone to be unsatisfied with their purchase. Let me know if you'd like to cancel and I can get a refund for you if you'd like.

Hi Joey,Thanks - right now it's just for David's projections. The Draft Mode is definitely something we'll continue to try and improve. I doubt it'll ever get near the power of the Draft or Projection Dominator but I do think it can move in that direction. We knew that for this year, we needed to get something stable that we could build on. But I definitely see movement for it there. Thanks.J

I'm talking about the Magazine really and working out an off-line mode some how. I'm just giving input. I don't want to see you guys fall behind.

Sorry, I misunderstood. It's possible we might have something improved for caching and offline mode before August. I'm just super hesitant to promise (or even hint at) things I don't know that we can make happen for sure. I agree for sure about offline mode. Trust me, it's something I want a lot. I just don't always get what I want... ;) J

Its definately a buzzkill. If someone created a book/ mag using ibook with its video integration it would be real slick

Just to point out... you're not expected to pay on top of your subscription

Couldn't agree more with these posts. It seems like a cop out for FBG's, and reading between the lines, this is all a 'oh crap, we didnt get approved. What do we do now???'Joe, have you ever thought about hiring a designer? if there is one thing your site and 'e-mag' is in desperate need of, its a new design.

I'll be taking my money elsewhere this year. I know FantasyFootballIndex is planning on releasing their entire magazine via iTunes app in the next few weeks...I look forward to that.

This. Although I also realise this isn't for everyone and some people prefer basic. Which is why I'd also like to see you open up your data feeds etc and have a 'developers section' similar to MyFantasyLeague etc. People with some knowledge and design skills could thn do the work for you.

I saw the question asked above, but not answered. Will the articles in the magazine be duplicated in the normal subscription area of the actual website?

If not, I see a problem with this. I am all for bonus extras for those who wish to pay for them (yes, I know it is free this year), but ALL the content should be available for traditional subscribers as well.

Can we get a confirmation on this issue?
