Footballguys Joins Fantasyplayers Ad Network (1 Viewer)

JB, I'd like to suggest you consider a freeze pane ad at the top of the page almost like an ad toolbar(one that stays at the top even when you scroll down the page) this way, the ad is still in our face for the advertiser, and we get the full width of our screens back.

The super sizing of ads is the worst, followed by the right side ad. Plus, the side ads are only effective advertising when you're at the top of the page anyway. So, at 50 posts per page, there is a lot of lost space.

Just my $0.02

Two words: Mozilla FirefoxNever see the ads.
Not an option for some. The adds and the pop ups will be forthcoming.
No popups.
You have my word (and I made them write it into the contract) that we would not have popup ads. I hate those as does everyone I know. I told them I'd shut the boards down before we had popups. If you ever see any popup ads, it's a mistake and please report it immediately.

Joe, I'm getting popups and they are very, very, frustrating. They are dragging my computer and everytime I click on a link a DeVry popup appears. :kicksrock: :lmao: :lmao:

Top ads - no issue

Side ads - irritating but not as bad as many other sites

Loading times for pages - unbearable

Keeping the boards free for the masses is a must to drive the subscriptions and keep this site different from others, but ads on the top of the page only is the way to go imo. These side ads and long page load times would drive me crazy if that's how it is going to be from this point forward.

I don't have any problems with this. Need to do what you need to do to keep the forums free. The side add is a little annoying but I can live with it. I have no problems with download times, not much difference than before for me.

I'm loving the side ad. I usually don't notice all the great stuff that gets advertised, but it's impossible to miss the one on the side.

It's like Christmas morning waiting to see what ad i get next when i reload.

Only thing i don't like is that the ads don't move down the screen with ya. Maybe do some frames or something so we always have the ads available to us. I suggest frames on the top and bottom with the ad-bar and maybe have the side ad move down the page with us as we scroll through the thread.

I don't mind the ads, but the Chrysler ad gave me a pop up.

ETA: and the Cinemax ad.

Maybe they're not true pop-ups.... they expand over the message board. Same thing in my book.

It's like Christmas? I guess we found Joe's alt.

No ads on the side for me!! I guess I got lucky! Using Firefox though...maybe thats it? I am not noticing anything in regards to speed or anything like that. I don't blame you for trying to generate some money!! This site still is very clean.

That side banner was so annoying, I hope you'll consider entrance ads or those ads between page views before you'll consider putting them back again.
Please do NOT do anything of the sort. I can't stand interstitial ads -- much more intrusive than any side banner.

Hey Guys,

Headsup on something that is coming soon.

We recently signed an agreement to work with the folks at Fantasyplayers.com to be part of their advertising network.

Before something gets started, this is a deal for nothing more than advertising. Fantasyplayers.com has no ownership whatsoever in Footballguys. Zero. All we are doing is using their ad network to help us generate some money from advertising. There do own a few sites but the great majority of the sites in their network are just like us - using the network soley to sell ads.

We've done some ads in the past with limited success for us. The problem is always that we are not big enough to be able to secure an audience with the people that matter in the huge corporations when it comes to quality ads. Fantasyplayers.com has a very large network of sports specific sites (mostly football and mostly fantasy football) and they have been able to put enough sites together in a network that they have an attractive base of eyes to the huge advertisers.

So we're going to see how it goes here.

I realize full well that ads are not popular. But we're at a point in our business where we can't continue to operate the site and boards as we have been. They have to be able to generate some money. One alternative was to charge a subscription fee for the boards. Many have asked that we make the boards for paying subscribers only but you guys know I'm not a fan of that. Another option would be to dramatically raise the price of the premium FBG subscription in order to help offset the costs more. But that's not a very attractive option either.

What we settled on was offering ads on the pages. The pages here will have a banner at top and a taller skinny banner on the right side. Again, I realize that's not going to be popular, but that's the reality of where we are in that we have to be able to have the pages generate some money if we are going to continue offering free access to the boards.

You have my word (and I made them write it into the contract) that we would not have popup ads. I hate those as does everyone I know. I told them I'd shut the boards down before we had popups. If you ever see any popup ads, it's a mistake and please report it immediately.

All advertising is a trade. The viewer "pays" for the material (even when the material is free) by accepting ads being on the site. I realize that fully. So it's our job to help the free material be worth "paying for".

It's my hope that the quality material you guys continue to post on the boards will be enough to make the ads worthwhile. So I'm asking for your help there. Keep posting good stuff. I'm also asking for your patience there as I have no doubt there will be some that don't like this. This board has become what it is for one reason only - because guys like you provide great discussion. I contribute relatively nothing in the big picture of it. It's you guys. Thanks for your patience and making this place what it is.

Thanks.

J
Looks like AFFL's home page. :goodposting:

I rather we move these boards to subscriber only than have the ads.

If your on here all the time - then kick up your $25 for the year like a bunch of us do and we can get rid of this crap.

I really try not to be a squeaky wheel. Joe wants some more $$$, I can understand that.

In the past, when people in my fantasy league would ask why I still read the FBG forums, where the content is rated R PG13 PG G Teletubbies, I would say it was worth it. Sure, other forums may be more fun. However, the content here was worth it. I believe this to still be the case. I need to weed through "homer" postings that border upon militant in their views, LHUCKS postings, and petty bickering (I'm sure all of these are prevalent in other forums only with more colorful language which adds to the entertainment), but I would say a solid 20% of the daily content is truly informative and useful.

Sadly, the only thing these banners have done for me is force me to use Firefox, Opera's plugins do not seem to work against the power of these eyesores. Pity really, I do very much enjoy Opera.

As long as they are having the desired financial outcome for Joe & Co, who am I to complain?

I've been a subscriber for a few years now and am payed up for another two years ... and the forums are every bit as important to me as the in season content .... subscription costs have risen annually since I can remember yet still we're faced with changes in the economic climate ... this idea of joining the adnetwork is obviously FBG's answer to rising cost and if it's gotta be it's gotta be ... but the side ads ... MAN THEY SUCK ... and the fact that now my page loads are much much longer .... that SUCKS TOO .... VERY VERY LARGE SUCK!

I primarily use Firefox, so I opened up the forums with IE. One word: HORRIBLE. Get Firefox NOW!

LMAO @ using...errrrr....not using 1/5 of the page because of an ad. That's called making a quality decision in the best best interest of those involved.

I'm using Firefox and not seeing the ads either. But pages are loading noticeably slower.

I can live with the ad at the top, and even live with having to close an ad every now and then, but I can't live with the reduced width because of the annoying add to the right of the screen. Very very bad IMO. Is this necessary?

the top is fine, i am getting no load issues, but the side bar is pretty weak. although i dont see an ad just white space.

but the narrowed usable message board space pretty much sucks.

i'm sure we'll get over it.

I've had a subscription here for years. 5 years, 7 years maybe.

I understand why there needs to be ads if you go the route you're going, which is to keep the boards free to people. I guess I disagree with keeping the boards free to all people. What you're doing essentially is penalizing the people who actually pay. The penalty is for us paying and having to put up with the ads because the truth is in my mind, I'm not just paying for the weekly information I get from you guys during the season, I'm paying for that plus these boards. I guess I have the option to not pay anything and just use the boards, but that's not how I do things.

To make my final decision if I were the person having to decide on this, I'd have to wonder HOW many regular people you have here that are board membes that DON"T get a subscription. How many people that are actually useful on here that we'd lose if you did choose to go with NO ads and charge to use the boards.

So, what you'd get is a membership to Fooballguys. And with that membership you'd get your weekly information, emails etc....all the free competitions you offer for members that relate to fantasy football AND your privlidge to use these boards.

I don't really like these adds and I've seen a few pop ups come up while surfing topics. I'm loyal, I'm not going to leave because of the adds nor am I going to complain all the time but this is my opinion on the subject.

FYI, I would much rather have a message board for subscribers. Not for nothing it's a crime these boards are free I learn so much from them....I would without a doubt pay for them. In all honesty, I rely on the boards more then I do on my subscription.

Thanks for the help and feedback guys. We're pulling the ads off here for a short bit as we figure out a couple of tech things that are causing us trouble.

Getting Pop-ups also.
