Forming a Dynasty League (1 Viewer)

I know this isn't the best time to start discussing forming a dynasty league- the season is only 1/4 of the way over and the jury is still out on most teams, but I have been considering forming a league for quite some time and I had some general questions about them. I am aware how they function, I just was curious about specifics and hoping to get some answers from individuals who have been in leagues for quite some time.

First, specifically roster size. Is there a best size for league size of 10? 12? With a starting roster of 9, including a K, D, TE right now we have a roster size of 15. Seems like an extra 5 would be fine? Maybe 10? I don't know, which is why I am asking this question

Second, how many rounds of a rookie draft work out? I have seen 2 and 3 rounds, but nothing more than that, nothing less. When a rookie draft is over, the teams have to make room for those picks correct? The roster just doesn't increase in size. Retirements (and unretirements) obviously factor in, but are players released to make room?

Third, how long does it take to really see a turn over of "superpowers" in the league, assuming that someone who sucks a couple of years in a row drafts accordingly and those draft picks pan out? Nothing's worse than a league where the same 4 people make it to the semifinals every season. People tend to lose interest and I wouldn't want to see a dynasty league fizzle out.

Thanks for any help. I'm bored- my Packers sucked last night... well the OL did, and they have a bye this week... so I start thinking of things to entertain myself and this is about the same time every year I start to ask my league about potential interest in a dynasty league. That being said, I may be posting on here for openings so keep your eyes open!

I run a dynasty league that is now in it's 6th season. We have 10 teams with a 20 player roster. We start QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/WR/TE/DEF/K. As for the draft, we hold round 1 in May, a week after the NFL draft, round 2 in June, round 3 in July, and round 4 begins the day after the last pre-season game. The draft usually sees rookies drafted through mid round 2, and then at that point we usually start to see vets or young guys in good situations get drafted. We require that you cannot go over the 20 man roster max. Owners must drop a player from their roster before making thier draft pick. This has worked very well with players retiring or underperforming. You will need to require that all teams have a K and Def at the conclusion of round 4.

As for turnover of dominant teams, we've actually had a different team win the championship every season, and every team has made the playoffs at least twice. We take the top 3 teams in each division for the playoffs, so 6 teams total.

Hope that helps!

The best way to do a dynasty rookie/free-agent draft is to give every team a first round pick and what round each team picks in after that depends on how many players the team dropped.

That way the weaker teams(who usually drop more players) have earlier picks and more picks after the first round while the better teams can keep all their studs.

My league is 12 teams with a 6-team winners bracket playoff and a 6-team losers bracket playoff. The winner of the losers bracket gets the #1 pick and so on. The winner of the winners bracket gets the 12th pick and so on.

I joined this established league before the 2006 season and inherited the worst team in the history of EVAR. I dropped pretty much the entire squad before that draft and was able to win the league last year thanks in large part to my 2006 picks that included DeAngelo Williams, Brandon Jacobs, and Marion Barber.

The previous "top dog" team is now average as he still owns LT, SJax, and Larry Johnson.

- 14 team leagues are best. Good dispersal of talent, but not easy for a team or two to become dominant with studs. Also best in terms of scheduling....have one division involving all 14 teams, each team plays each other once (13 game regular season) with a 3 week playoff (wks 14, 15, 16)

- Roster size of 24 in-season. 30 players in off-season.

- Rookie Draft of 4 rounds.

- My newest league incorporated a 1 college player per roster feature. Sweet new twist that makes it different than the normal dynasty leagues.

- Biggest tip I can give is to institute a 1 year advanced entry fee. For example, if starting this year the first payment upfront would be both the 2009 + 2010 fee. Then next year the 2011 fee is due. If anybody bails on the league than the new incoming owner gets their 1st year free to fill the spot easily and make that squad their own (new owner pays the future year immediately so everyone is always paid up one year in advance.

Send me a PM with your email address if interested in seeing our full league constitution. Covers a lot of areas and loopholes that have been dealt with over my years of playing and running leagues.
