I am looking to handcuff Gore. Does anyone know who has the edge to get most of the carries if something happens to Gore? I have seen both Robinson and Hicks listed as the backup in different places, any help would be appreciated.

Since this was about to fall off the 1st page without a reply, I'll drop in. I'm a SF local. There's no clear handcuff. If Gore went down there would be a RBBC, though my guess is Robinson would get the greater share of carries. Nolan himself called them about even recently.
How about Clayton? He looked good in limited action this summer.31/116/1 1/6/0 Not sure how many times he was targeted in the passing game, I was surprised to see just one reception.
As Gore's top backup, ahead of the other two guys? No chance of that. In fact, he's a good bet to land on the practice squad rather than the main roster. The other spot on the 53-man will be taken by FB Moran Norris, and they will probably only use four spots for RBs. If they go five deep, then Clayton s/b in. But not as Gore's top backup.

I was thinking more on the lines of M.Rob as the #2 and Clayton possibly as #3, but it looks like Hicks is a better receiving option. I guess there really isn't any place for him at this time. Seems like a Clayton/Hicks one two punch might work if both Gore & Robinson were out.

Hicks is a team favorite -- good work ethic, attitude, intangibles, etc -- and has always performed well when called on. If Robinson (or Hicks) were hurt as well as Gore, then Clayton would be promoted up from the PS if that's where he's sitting at the time. I think they like Clayton but he still has to wait before getting into the rotation, barring injury to others. Look to 2008 for him perhaps.
