Skins are in deep need of more draft picks to build up depth. Perhaps they entertain the idea of trading Cooley?

if the NFL remains in an uncapped year in 2010, they could trade him without cap worries. Outside of that I agree with you

Skins are thin at WR. They'll use both of these guys next year. Cooley will be more of the traditional tight end with more blocking responsibilities. Davis will be a hybrid TE who is actually used as more of a WR3.

And that'll be a misue of one of them, since they're both primarily pass catchers, not blockers. So logically, that's what the Redskins will do.

Eventually, yes.But his cap hit is rather huge in any trade scenario. Was 8.8 million hit this year. Next year will be slightley less.

He got a 6 year deal in 2007.

When he restructured in '08 he got an additional 11 million in guaranteed money... and he already had 14 million in guaranteed signing bonus before that.

Spread over 5 years the 14m = 2.8per (-2007/-2008/-2009) leaving 5.6 currently.

and then 11 million spread over the '08-'12 seasons. So 2.2 per (-2008/-2009) leaving 6.6.

Thats 12.2 million guaranteed that is owed (but I dont think current year '10 will have to be eatin if traded) which is about a 7.2 hit from my basic understanding.

But I dont think he will go anywhere next season. The cap hit doesnt work. Best to keep his services and get the hit lower with each passing year.

This is typically more of an issue when they player in question is no longer as good as they once were. In this case, Cooley is simply injured. So while he may impose a substantial cap hit, he would likely be worth it to a team that needs a top tier tight end.

Given that Fred Davis is BETTER than Cooley, at least at catching and running, and 2010 is uncapped, and there's a new GM, I'd be surprised if they don't move Cooley.
