Free Safety v. Strong Safety (1 Viewer)

As I pour over stats from last year and find little diamonds in the rough on defense that no one will consider but me.....periodically I find a Free Safety that has more tackles than the Strong Safety on a team.Case in point: The JetsFree SafetyErik Coleman73 Solo Tackles27 AssistsReggie TongueStrong Safety55 Solo Tackles17 AssistsMy question is:Is this a case of the Free Safety having better skill than the SS or is it the design of the defense?

Ok I am not defense expert but I did read an article a while back and it is based on defense. Some defenses do not let safties roam as much. I will try to find the link.

Case in point: The Jets

Free Safety

Erik Coleman

73 Solo Tackles

27 Assists

Reggie Tongue

Strong Safety

55 Solo Tackles

17 Assists

My question is:

The Jets use both safeties interchangeably so FS or SS does not matter.

In some cases, teams play a more Left Safety versus Right Safety system even though one is classified as Strong Safety versus Weak Safety. Normally, you actually have to watch the team and fairly closely to figure that out. SS who play close to the line as almost an extra LB generally out perform all other DBs. Some teams, especially cover 2 teams, the Safeties rarely play close to the line. In those cases, you need to determine who is the more talented player.

Also remember this....IIRC, when Tongue was injured to start the year, Coleman played his SS position. EC then moved over to FS when Tongue came back.

Another tough person to peg stats to position was another rookie, Madieu Williams. He played CB, FS & SS last year depending on which of the CIN DBs was injured at the time.

Suffice it to say they both had FANTASTIC 2nd seasons and really forced me to look at the mid-RD safeties in this year's rookie draft to see who might be the "next sleeper rookie safety."

I really like the approach you're looking at this from.

so have you come up with a "next sleeper rookie safety"?
