Frerotte likely OUT for a couple of weeks (1 Viewer)

Devil's Advocate
I'm sure nobody was pinning their playoff hopes on Gus, but it wasn't the worst matchup in the world this week.

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is expected to start for the Vikings on Sunday at Arizona, although team officials are believed to be holding out hope that Gus Frerotte will be able to play. According to people with knowledge of the situation, the reality is that Frerotte will miss a week or two because of a fracture in his lower back. Running back Chester Taylor told WCCO television today that Jackson would be the Vikings’ starting quarterback on Sunday, his first start since Sept. 14 when the Vikings lost to Indianapolis to drop to 0-2 on the season. If Frerotte is sidelined for two weeks that means the earliest he would not return to the starting role would be the regular-season finale against the New York Giants at the Metrodome.

huge boost to Arizona's defense!
I'm not so sure about that.a) Teams subconsciously tend to coast once they have wrapped up their division.andb) T-Jax looked MUCH better than Gus last week.
:goodposting: on both countsThis game will depend on the suspensions of the Williams boys most likely, but either way, if MN was going to gameplan to RUN RUN RUN to keep Warner & Co. off the field w/ Gus, I think they'll run even more (if that's possible) w/ TJ @ QB.TJ actually looked decent last week in the reserve role. Maybe this season, sitting and learning more, will help in the long run. I do agree w/ a post above that this KILLS Berrian & Rice (though the latter is already likely dead to non dynasty FF owners). Shaincoe or however you spell it might get a bump.I doubt they let TJ pass it more than 18x - and it's very possible they won't need to.

Well, to get back to reality a bit, T-Jack only looked good last week because he was playing against Detroit. They have a hard enough time game planning for one QB, so for them to defend Jackson(who plays QB way differently than Gus) was pretty much impossible. Arizona won't be surprised with T-Jack, and his mobility will be something they plan for. They will force him to throw the deep routes(where he struggles) while limiting the slants and hitches.

Now, I'm not saying he can't play a good game, but I would bet against him being any better than Gus. In fact, I would expect Arizona to stack the line even more(bad for AP owners) since the threat of the deep ball is extremely reduced with Jackson at the helm.

Bad news for AP owners period. They will be in catchup mode all game long. Big bump up for AZ D.

Wonder how this affects Longwell. I know he's just a kicker, but he's been a good one and every point matters at this stage. Could this help or is that wishful thinking?

I don't see how it will help. Childress already did everything in his power to help Longwell's stats, like running play action from the 2 on first and goal with an immobile QB. I don't think anything will change in that regard, so probably expect the norm. The only thing I see is the Vikings maybe not being able to move the ball as effectively. If this is the case I would think it would be more punts.

Let's look at this statistically:

In 4 games in 2008, Tarvaris's stats

Comp.%: 55.7%

TDs: 2

Int.: 1

YPA: 6.0

Passer Rating: 77.1

Football Outsiders DVOA: 0.2%

Now, for Frerotte:

Comp.%: 59.1%

TDs: 12

Int: 15

YPA: 7.2

Passer Rating: 73.7

Football Outsiders DVOA: -8.3%

Statistically, these guys look very similar. Only major differences are that Frerotte throws more interceptions and has a higher YPA. Gives a lot of credence to the theory that teams will bring more guys in the box.

However, as a Vikings fan, I'm not certain that the Vikings chances of winning or losing look that much different, particularly given how good Tarvaris looked in the 2nd half last week. The whole offense just looked a lot more dynamic last week once he came in. Yes, it was Detroit, but Frerotte didn't look nearly as good against that same Detroit defense. I honestly think I would rather have TJax in there; Frerotte just looks a little tired and beat up at this point.
