Friday night/Saturday morning once in a lifetime meteor storm (1 Viewer)

Here's the link with the map for best viewing areas. We're in the FAIR area, so I'm hoping the clouds stay away.

This is the first ever pass through of this comet so no one knows the exact numbers. Early predictions were 100 meteors an hour. But some experts are saying this could produce 1000 meteors an hour. That's a meteor storm, not a shower. The Perseids in August are usually 100 to 200.

Some experts have backed off their numbers while some have upped theirs this past month. It's going to be fun to see if this is a boom or a bust. I've got my alarm set for early Saturday morning.

The show should start around 2 am ET.

Another cool thing. If you've seen a meteor shower before, you know they move very quickly across the sky. This one may be different. Scientists are saying that the objects are moving slower and are larger than other comet trails.

This could mean slow moving glowing trails.

Unlike most meteor showers, the Camelopardalids was not predicted well in advance because it is such a new discovery.
Anyone else think that this is kinda lame?

Me and my wife set up our hot tub time arounds these. I am in the good zone, I can also guarantee it will be cloudy and raining during it. That always seems to happen when we have a good look at celestrial events.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I plan on camping out in my local movie theaters projection room tonight. Either that or in the metal shed in my backyard.

Middle TN is in between a Bad and Good area, so no clue if I'll be able to see it, but hope I do. Thanks for sharing.

They don't like to advertise this type of event too far in advance. It keeps the cults from getting organized.

All of North America will have a chance to see the meteor shower, but the farther north you are, the better the viewing. This is because the northern U.S. (like Michigan), will have the meteors originating from higher in the sky. As long as skies are clear, you should be able to view it.

Sweet. I am going to be on a lake in middle rural Alabama (in the midst of the "good zone") with lots of edibles for this. Hopefully, we get a nice view of the show.

Poor zone here. But the middle of the desert with zero light pollution so I'll be hoping for the best. Thanks!

Looks like I am in a good zone but it is supposed to be cloudy and rainy tonight especially after midnight. Not looking good for viewing.

Are you in Charlotte? My weather app says rain tailing off at 9pm, then partly cloudy til about 2am, then mostly clear starting at 3am...so u might be able to catch some of it...of course if you look at 3 diff weather apps you might get 3 diff forecasts.

Yeah Charlotte. Last time I looked it seemed like right around midnight would suck cloud wise but like you say everyone has a different take so we'll see.

Forecast for 50 degrees and clear skies here tonight. I'm making a Space Night out of it and taking my boys to Perkins Observatory beforehand for the weekly space program they put on. Should be a good, sciencey night with the kids!
