Friday Night Tykes YES! (1 Viewer)

My 7.5 yr old son saw this preview and really wants to watch it.

He was also pumped that a little kids league actually does kicking and punting and wanted to know if he could play in that league.

I'm doing my best to slow him down, but my son is obsessed with football right now. He was eligible to play in our local youth football league this last year, but we didn't let him (he cried).

I don't want him getting into it too early and getting injured/concussions or burnt out, but he's been obsessed for the past year now. I think if he is still this passionate about it in the fall, I'm going to let him have at it and see if he likes the real thing. At least maybe he'll stop tackling his little sister around the house.

Wow.

Some dudes with issues there.

Broncos Coach looking to "set the tone" with an intentional offsides cheap-shot on the first play of the game. Guy needs punched in the face. Fun watching him lose and cry though - "this was the biggest day of my life..." Lol.

Just watched the opening and this is just sad. Is it any wonder that girls outnumber boys going to college and seem to do better in school? I went to an Ivy league college and aside from the fact that most parents think their kids are the smartest or best athletes, I know my oldest has always mentioned girls as other students who do as well as him. I am sort of glad he isn't a sports nut, because he is in 7th grade, pretty much handles all his work, test schedules, etc. all by himself. Couldn't be prouder that all he asks me about are questions he gets stuck or giving me a study sheet to test him the night before. If he liked baseball and was good enough for travel ball, he wouldn't have time to do all of this and get straight A's. I sure as heck know which path will lead him on a chance to be most successful in life. I loved sports and love playing baseball with my 2 younger sons, but this #### makes me realize that the great American Empire is going the way of the other empires before. Being like the people on reality TV or being on a travel team is somehow more important than inventing the next big thing. Thank goodness there are still kids going to school for an education, because the more we put these idiots on TV and glorify 8/9 year old Texas football, the quicker we become a has been.

Oh well, gotta get off the soap box, but stuff like this makes me sick. Another reason why even though I love football and played until college that I might not ever let my sons play it. If some ##### is coaching the other team like that and hurts my kid, I would be more pissed at myself for knowing that I put him in that situation. I am not Marshall Faulk, my kids have about a snowball's chance in hell of playing pro-anything and based at looking at the physiques of most of those coaches and parents, so do their kids.

You don't think this stuff goes on with girls? Go to a higher level softball tournament sometime, you will see coaches and parents every bit as crazy as these people.

Where do you draw the line? pushing a kid is ok but this is over the line IMO, but apparently not for a lot of parents. It seems ok as long as you are winning.

You are right, it absolutely is now, but I do think that girls are given more opportunity to not participate, whereas the other thread (and this show) shows how even mediocre boys are still being forced into this stuff by their parents. I am fairly certain that the amount of boys travel teams far outweigh the amount of girls teams, plus for softball there is baseball, basketball is for both, but football? There is nothing comparable.

I think crazy is crazy on both sides, but I know of a lot of girls in my neighborhood that don't participate in sports, but only a handful of boys not in sports, let alone travel teams.

My son played 8/9 year old football for two years in Texas (Dallas area) and even I find myself shocked by these coaches and some parents. GG San Antonio.

I take it you've never heard of Cheer Perfection? As for a counter for football, there is volleyball and cheer for girls.

I've seen the first episode of this show and the coaching is appalling. The coaches for the Jr. Borncos, Colts and Outlaws should be ashamed of themselves. I run a youth football organization and I would never allow my coaches to act in such a fashion. The big problem is that many of these coaches start off as dads and get little to no coaches training. If you are looking to put your kids in youth sports you want it to be with a league and organizations that require training for all of their coaches. You should also look for leagues that require recertification of that training every year or every few years.

I read tons of coaching material in the offseason and attend coaching clinics and league training in the offseason to make myself a better administrator and coach. Other coaches should be doing this as well. I doubt many if any of the coaches in this show are doing that.

This kind of thing is why society is getting less and less considerate and respectful of others as we progress into the future. The idea of ripping someone's head off and watching them bleed is NOT left on the field.

A friend played Division I, and was coaching kids football in Texas. He was the O-Line coach for a team of five-year-olds. Apparently the team had the full complement of specialized coaches. My buddy didn't even have a kid on the team, or any kids for that matter. He was recruited to coach for the team because he played O-line in college. Crazy.

Don't forget gymnastics. There are girls who are spending two and three tiimes as many hours in the gym as these little kids are spending on the football field.

I'm not surprised that a youth team, even a 5yo team, is looking for guys with football experience. O-line is the hardest thing to coach in youth football, because no one wants to do it. There is no glamour there and the line doesnt score TDs or make spectacular runs or catches.

I want two things out of guys who want to coach. A good temperament and a desire to get better as a coach. Whether he or she has a ton of experience or even played before is a distant second. Alot of guys who played ball are terrible coaches. They have a hard time teaching what they know to young kids who are largely clean slates. They know what to do, but can't break it into easily digestable progressions that young kids can learn and understand. Also they have their own biases and prejudices that are often times difficult to overcome. What works or can be taught in High School, College or the Pro's doesnt always work at the youth level.

Both my kids play in this league.

The league is awesome, that team is ridiculous.

Ill post more later.
That team? It appears at least four of the five featured teams are ridiculous.
I didn't watch the show, but the Broncos were another level.

I'll be able to share more this evening.
That coach definitely seems the most unhinged.

Why are these teams so big? You don't need 30 kids on a youth football team.

I would like to see these teams play pour local kids. Not saying we would win or lose just wanting to see if competitive football at this age is anything like competitive baseball. Comparing the two in baseball rec/comp is like apples and oranges. I don't see how in the worlda team can carry that many kids and make it fun. Maybe they have no minimum play requirements?

He's not only the Coach ofthat particular team in his little Broncos organization. He is President of the whole Broncos organization.

They dont have a minimum play rule based on what I have read about the league they play in.

The team Broncos "Momager" said her kid only played one snap and the other coach says "Hopefully next week we can get everybody in."

You can be competetive and play all of your kids. These guys are just terrible coaches.

I watched about 4 minutes and I was so pissed off I had to stop. As an AD I would have tossed the Broncos coach. He has no business at all coaching 8-9 year olds. In fact I'll just go with he has no business coaching. That is a ####### disgrace and I don't give a rats ### how many championships they have won.

Agreed. The tragedy is that he runs the whole Bronco organization. So if they are doing this crap at the 8-9 level what are they doing to their 10-11's?

I watched the trailer to this and it just seems way over the top. I must have seen 3 or 4 helmet to helmet hits in it. The type of crap they are trying to eliminate at the NFL level and these are just 8-9 year olds. The worst part is in one of the trailers where the coach tells the kid if the other player comes across to put it in his head.

This is the reason y kids won't play football. Call me what you want and make all the fun you like of me. I was repulsed by what i saw. That type of crap does not teach character.

Obviously do what you think is right but I can tell you for a fact that crap wouldn't be tolerated in a Pop Warner environment. At least not in Charlotte. We have bounced entire organizations here in Charlotte over stuff like that and that coach would be done. For life.

I agree and I loved watching football. I didn't play any youth football, just when I got to junior high and then high school (didn't play in college). When it comes to my sons, I honestly don't care if they play football or not, at least not until they are in junior high/high school although nowadays that means they will be so far behind it won't matter.

Our little league has a huge complex with soccer and football fields and I usually park next to one football field since it is a shorter walk to the fields my sons played on a bunch. I remember seeing 2 ambulances come, several players hurt on the fields bad enough to have parents and coaches out there and several players sitting on the sidelines with ice packs on their necks. This is same 8-10 type age range.

With all of those helmet to helmet hits, I can't imagine what 10-12 years of consistent hits (playing spring and fall) before reaching college will do to these kids. I was never the best athlete and went to a top 10 college, so let's just say I am realistic about my sons chances on college scholarships and I know their brains are their best assets. I am keeping them in baseball and basketball as long as I can.

Right, so like I said.. my kids play in the league. I got Bob Magaw'd for a week, sorry for delay.

I'm both glad and annoyed our team didn't agree to do the show. Glad, because this show is an embarassment. Annoyed because our coaches would shine a better light. The team is very competitive and uber-organized, and the coaches do a lot of yelling. BIG difference though is that it is always focused on developing the kids, whether it be their fundamentals or their attitude/work ethic. They are taught to play hard through the whistle. They are taught sportsmanship.

I will be pulling my kids after this show confirms what we parents suspected from a couple of these other coaches. My kids were both victims of dirty play against the Broncos, my oldest against both Colts and the Outlaws. They aim for the head, they chop engaged kids, they hit late (VERY late), they hit defenseless players.

That Broncos coach needs professional help. He taunts opposing parents after said dirty plays, clearly has his priorities out of whack. TYFA could not have chosen a worse representative of the league.

The draw here is that mot of these teams have direct ties to the High School programs (even wear the uniforms and share the name), and from age 5/6 you are brought along in their system.

Coming through this process pretty much puts you on the team, not coming through the process creates a higher bar.

This is where the ego comes in for the coaches. Power trips.

I am not trying to start an argument with ya here but I find the bolded about lots of yelling to be counter intuitive to the whole developing kids. I get it, football is a physical combat sport. I just don't see the need for the belittling, berating and yelling of 8 and 9 year olds. I have never coached football. I have coached other sports lots of times. We get into our kids and motivate them but we aren't yelling and screaming at them. I guess I just don't get it and this show shows the absolute worst of what it all is. I won't watch it and help support this crap by giving the viewer rating one more person.

Exactly. I'd also bet that every "yelling" coach thinks their yelling is "different" because "it is always focused on develping kids". They can see how wrong it is when they witness other coaches, but they don't do it like other coaches. They do it the "right" way.

Any coach that yells at 8 and 9 year olds should never coach children of any age ever again.

I understand how it seems ridiculous for me to try to differentiate.

But there is a huge difference between the COMON JOHNNY type of yelling to push kids and the YOU ARE WEAK JOHNNY yelling you see here.

These coaches are in the process of being removed. Apparently I am one of hundreds that have pulled kids out.

You dont know the context of the "yelling." I coach and I run an org. Sometimes the yelling is done to get the attention of the players. It's never done to belittle a kid. I yell praises as well. Should I not do that either. Many times a yell is to make sure the child and his parents, seated 20 or 30 yards away can hear it too. When we practice we are just one team of 6 practicing on a field with 150 boys ages 5-15. I also have another 125 cheerleaders doing their thing within earshot of our football practice are. Its very noisy at our field. I've never yelled or screamed directly in the face of one of my players nor would I ever.

Categorizing all yelling that occurs on the field as negative is short sighted.

I agree with NCC that those antics would not be tolerated in Pop Warner. These independent leagues like TYFA think they know better and have all the answers. The fact that they do their own in house coaching certifications is a bit disturbing to me as it seems the training is of very poor quality.

I agree. "Yelling" doesn't have to be a negative thing. It's very common to yell words of encouragement. "Yells at" gives it a bit more of a negative spin.

Watched the last show, the fact that #28 was allowed back in the game after he appeared to be knocked out was jaw dropping. Also forcing your kid back out there after he threw up on the field in a 40+ to 0 game is insane.

This is like Toddlers and Tiaras for boys

I don't want him getting into it too early and getting injured/concussions or burnt out, but he's been obsessed for the past year now. I think if he is still this passionate about it in the fall, I'm going to let him have at it and see if he likes the real thing. At least maybe he'll stop tackling his little sister around the house.
Have you looked into flag football leagues?

I'm coaching my two kids (7 and 5) in one and they're having a great time.

It's 5 on 5, no tackling, no blocking, everyone's a live receiver on every play.

They both had played on the town's flag team but that was 7 on 7 with a line and blocking and they both hated blocking. At 7 years old the town's flag league ends and they have to move up to tackle with 4 practices a week and a game on weekends. My wife was worried about the hitting at their age and I was pretty sure football 5 days a week would have burned them out pretty fast and they would have lost interest.

The flag league we're in is one practice per week (1 hour) and one game on Saturday. We're playing indoor in the winter so its like an arena league right now. That's the other bonus, this league runs almost every season so we can jump in or out depending on what other sports they want to play. They've played 2 seasons in a row so far though and are geared up for it again in the spring.

That's about as far as I made it, too.

Yes, he's disgusting and should be out of the league.

Parents,
Reminder that Midget (1st year tackle) ages are now 6-7 y/o with age cutoff 1 Aug 2014. Meaning that if your athlete turns 6 before 1 Aug 2014 they will be grouped into the Midget division NOT Flag.

I would like to have a limited equipment issue for the Midget team this Sunday from 2 - 3 pm. If you plan on playing Spring football please let me know if you will be able to make it and I will send you the address.

I know some of you have expressed concern over the recent TV show "Friday Night Tykes" and the actions of coaches from the other teams on the show (Jr Broncos, Predators, Jr Rockets, Outlaws and Colts). TYFA executives have also expressed those same concerns and informed the league membership that changes and punishments are coming down to help ensure that type of behavior is eliminated from our league.

If you do plan on drawing equipment Sunday please make sure you bring a deposit check and a paper copy of your Paypal receipt to show registration payment. Just in case it is not showing on my roster yet.

I hope to see you all for our Spring season!

Good Morning Members,

I am sending this email to address actions that have taken place against coach/volunteers in the Friday Night Tykes TV Show. As the previous email stated...TYFA does not support nor do we condone the actions, language and behavior of the coach/volunteers in the show. We are 4 weeks into the show and we continue to see violations of rules, but more importantly we have seen blatant violations of the code of conduct and we will not stand for this.

As of Jan 26, 2014 TYFA has taken disciplinary action against Charles Chavarria (Broncos) and Marecus Goodloe (Colts) for violations of the code of conduct. I am not going to go into what the specifics are, but I am sure you are aware of what they have done.

The following disciplinary actions have been taken:
  • Charles Chavarria - was removed from his duties as a TYFA Black Shirt, he has been suspended from coaching for the entire 2014 season (Spring and Fall) and is required to write a letter of apology to the entire TYFA membership for embarrassing the you and the league.
  • Marecus Goodloe - Has been suspended for the entire 2014 spring football season and is required to write a letter of apology to the entire TYFA membership for embarrassing the you and the league.
In order to maintain transparency, we will make public the actions taken against said coaches and any other coach/volunteers. As of now these are the actions that have been taken by TYFA and we will continue to monitor the show and punish those coach/volunteers that have violated our rules, policies and code of conduct. I want to reassure you that we have taken this seriously and just because theses coach/volunteers participated in the show it does not afford them amnesty for their conduct. They all took the certification course and they know that they have not displayed the type of conduct expected by the league."
My son begs me daily to let him play this year. It is the sport he truly takes to and is good at... hard to weigh.

Fear for your kids is a powerful thing to shake free of.
