Topic for the day. How do you guys see yourself splitting your commitment between the Daily Format games and traditional Season Long Format games?

I've asked the question about how you're spreading your "commitment" between the two formats this year. "Commitment" is maybe not the right word. Don't get too hung up on it. Think of it as your time / money / interest commitment to the format.

Footballguys clearly does both. We were founded on having Season Long format content and we run the Footballguys Players Championship traditional Season Long type format. But we also provide content for the Daily Games and advertise for them.

The Daily Format is of course the newer format and generates a ton of buzz. But I'm wondering how the Fantasy Football market (or at least our Shark Pool guys) are approaching it. I hear some folks saying the Daily Games have completely taken over and the Season Long format is dying quickly. I hear others saying the Season Long will stay forever and the Daily Games are a fad. Others say there is plenty of room for both to flourish.

I personally tend to be on the "plenty of room for both to flourish" angle. But I'm way more interested to hear what you guys think.

Thanks.

J

I'd also love to hear more on why your split is the way it is. What about the Season Long format do you love that is keeping you there. Or what do you dislike about the Season Long format that has you moving to other. What do you love about the Daily Format that's pulling you there. Or why doesn't the Daily Format interest you.

Thanks.

J

Just to provide some background"

Been on the boards since 2003...been playing FF since 1997 season and Jeff Blake was my first pick ever.

I just started playing on FanDuel halfway through this season and enjoyed it...with that said, I can easily see how it would suck someone in, and I think the line as to whether it is "gambling" gets crossed (not a huge moral issue for me, just an observation). Where I find myself gravitating to is "Option C"; I have been part of the SSL/WSL leagues for a season or two on the boards and just love them. I can draft throughout the offseason, and then just wait and watch as the season unfolds...no anger whether I started the wrong guy, no scrambling on Sundays at noon to fix lineups. It is very casual and relaxing and I think there is a market for some $$ oriented games to be organized (ala FanDuel) for this draft and watch genre of FF.

To answer your question, for me, I enjoy the entire season. I put the time in before my draft and can't remember the last time of was "out of it" before the last week. FanDuel type stuff is fun, but it actually rewards luck more than in general FF IMO...when I draft and manage throughout a season, I have contingency plans for my contingency plans...I don't need to reset each week.

I have been playing for 15+ years and feel I will always prefer the season long format to the daily format. Season long requires significant time and effort to build something(s) and I think for that reason it will always be more rewarding to play. The Daily format seems so much more like gambling plain and simple (nothing wrong with that).

I put down an 80-20 Season-Daily commitment, but it really depends on how my season goes. I never played daily before the 2nd half of last year when I came to the realization that all my 2013 ff teams had fallen and couldn't get up. I was riding out the year and figured what the heck and I gave it a try. Once I got the hang of it I had a some success.

I think as long as my season long teams are competitve I have enough to keep me busy. I don't want to pit daily teams (fast women) types against my season long commitments. Unless I find that my season long commitments have left me for another ;)

I used to enjoy betting on games and occasionally I still do (but very rarely). The thing that I like about the season long fantasy game is that it provides me with enough of a fix, and I'm not going to lose my shirt or get sucked into trying to win my money back and make a foolish/desperate play. The daily format provides a never ending array of choices and options - I'm not sure that is a good thing?

I have played the daily format and have enjoyed it. I have looked at the daily format to get action on times when I have no fantasy involvement (week 17 NFL, college football, occasional NBA). I treat the daily format as something that I look to sparingly as a special treat.

The daily format is essentially gambling and I'm a little wary of getting too into the daily format.

I have never looked into the daily format and I don't foresee myself doing so in the future. From the very outset when I heard about these types of fantasy formats my first thought was that they would suck-in the gambling types who need that type of instant gratification. That just isn't for me. Way too much luck involved vs actual skill in my opinion, plus, I'm not really a gambler. Yes, season long formats also are type of "gambling" but I have more control over the outcome of my "gambling" because I can do so much more over the long haul of a full season to mitigate that luck. Spreading it out over a full season diminishes that luck factor by a good degree for those that actually do their homework and research (skill). There is an inherent recovery time from which relatively early-to-mid season bad luck can be overcome in a season long format. I have zero interest in trying out the "dailies".

I've been playing FF since 1997 and totally love the season long format due to the commitment it takes to be fully involved. It's extremely rewarding to be successful at something you've put a lot of effort into.

I too have been heavily involved in the message board mock drafts here at FBG over quite a few seasons but have not had the time to devote to those drafts the last two years. Those types of "draft and forget it" formats would probably do well on a national scale and it's one that FBG has missed the boat on for years, even though it's been sitting there right under your noses. FBG even has a forum dedicated to them and they've been refined over the years to the point which you could probably take your cue from the them and run with it. There doesn't have to be a large monetary commitment from those who want to play for it to be successful. Just ask any staff member who has participated in them, and there are quite a few, and you might get the same opinion.

Voted: 100% Season Long / 0% Daily

I want to try the daily format, but know myself too well. Same reason I don't bet on games. I'd get sucked in.

I've played in the same 2 ff leagues for over a decade (one dynasty and one redraft). That's the level of engagement for me that keeps me interested but doesn't make me sacrifice other commitments (family, work, friendships).

I've been on these boards since the days of "old yeller" and have played fantasy football since 1993. As my life has evolved (marriage, kids, increased work demands), I've spent much less time on fantasy sports, but still consider it a hobby. I play in a few leagues, probably laying out $400 to cover my leagues for the year.

I still really enjoy the research and debates on these boards. That, and playing with the same core group of friends in multiple leagues, is what keeps me engaged. At this point fantasy sports for me is about friendships and being able to get together for drafts, have a few cocktails, and reminisce about our days as bachelors.

I admittedly have no interest in daily leagues, as that's all about straight up gambling, which just doesn't fit with my lifestyle right now. Had these daily leagues come around in my single days, chances are I would be a regular player. The closest analogy would be to online poker

I'm interested to hear how many long-time fantasy players have switched to daily games full-time

I love drafting teams and that is still my main attraction to the traditional season-long format (both baseball and football). I enjoy drafting and managing a team over the course of a season.

I definitely see the appeal of the daily games but I haven't gone all-in yet.

I find the year long leagues especially dynasty leagues to be the most interesting as you get to build a team over time and really cheer for "your guys". The daily game is something I'm going to do a bit this season but it doesn't have nearly the same appeal to me.

I was about to post nearly the same thing. Been playing Fantasy Football since 1991. I am in one long-time Dynasty League, but I don't play for the money, nor do I invest a large sum to play. I play for the love of the hobby. I play for the camaraderie and to add an element of excitement to the NFL season. Daily games simply do not appeal to my current lifestyle. I have no desire to gamble, and between my work schedules and my commitment to my family, I choose not to make the time investment into this hobby which I am certain I would be inclined to make if I participated in daily games.
