Friend to seek political asylum in the U.S. (1 Viewer)

Remember the woman we visited in Hangzhou a couple of years ago... the one with lots of political connections? Well, back in May she entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and probably 8 months pregnant. I thought she would be turned back by customs when they saw she was pregnant; she was allowed to enter. While my wife and I were in Europe in late May, she gave birth to a baby girl in California.

Now she's staying at our house and will meet with our immigration attorney next week to discuss a case for requesting political asylum in the U.S.

I thought the whole idea was crazy but it would be unlike her to do this without having researched it first. Sure enough... the U.S. approves more cases from China for political asylum than from any other country - and there's lots of news coverage about this being a back-door shortcut through the immigration process, especially if a U.S. citizen child is involved.

Note: she is here legally as of right now, as her tourist visa is still valid, and I suppose there is nothing illegal about her asking for asylum now that she's here.

Anyhow, that's the news for this Friday.

Imagine wanting to be a citizen of another country so bad you'd go there 8 months pregnant and have your baby there simply to try and improve your odds. Imagine wanting to leave your country that much

here half of our citizens don't even want to be here bad enough to vote for president

That would suck being pregnant all those years.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder how much she thought this through, but she's no dummy, and I imagine she did her research quite diligently before going through with this. The big kicker is, from what I understand, once asylum is granted, she cannot go back to China. At all. And that's a big difference from the situation my wife is in... she can come and go as often as she pleases.

Should be no problem, the borders are wide open for all to stroll in....
