Friends Feed Organic Filet Mignon to Their Dogs (1 Viewer)

Over Thanksgiving we stayed in SF with some friends and found out they buy organic filet mignon from Whole Foods and add it to their dogs' regular dog food.

Thought it was a joke at first but they made it clear that they do it and think nothing is wrong with it.

Are these people insane or am I making too big of a deal out of it?

Some people like to burn money and others like to serve filet mignon to their pets. Both are ridiculous, but it's their money. People do all kinds of weird ####.

I think you're fine. Seeing rank inequality like that and watching people feed their pets gourmet food is grist for any mill, social or political.

Good to know that you know some one percenters besides Chet.

On thanksgiving, we give our dog a thanksgiving dinner, a little turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce.

I don't make my dog his own steak, but when I make steak, I'll give him a bite or two of mine. When I make eggs, Ill scramble him one.

Nothing wrong with feeding your dog food, even steak, but what was most disturbing is that they cook steak specifically for the dogs even when they aren't eating it.

Picture of the receipt of it didn't happen.
I didn't see them personally do it but they weren't trying to pull our legs with it. The wife (Japanese and not the joke playing type) was a little bashful about it but thought the dogs deserved a treat once in awhile.

What's that going for per pound? $20? $25?
Even more than I thought - $34/lb.

These people aren't crazy wealthy but aren't hurting for money in any way so they must think it's a really nice thing to do for the dogs - not realizing they don't know the difference between a filet and a round steak.

Was it bone in? If not I bet they would have preferred organic T-Bones (unless that's their regular food?)

That's really dumb. They shouldn't cook it. Dogs should get raw meats.

I'm solidly in the "who gives a ####" camp.

So many dogs in the world being mistreated, I'm certainly not going to call anybody crazy when they go overboard spoiling the hell out of their dogs. The more people doing that the better (so long as the spoiling doesn't lead to little misbehaving ####heads that bother other people).

My parents' dog is battling kidney disease, and they've always been the type that probably feeds her a little more than they probably could really afford. Telling them the are crazy for it at this moment would be a good way to get punched in the nose.

If you eat organic steak at Whole Foods because you disagree with the treatment of animals at huge factory farms, it doesn't matter who it's for - either that steak was "ethically" raised or not. So if that's your reason for organic, free range beef, then you should always buy it no matter who it's for.

If the have the money and that's how they choose to spend it, good on them.

My mom fed her old dog regular chicken and we're very sure that helped to extend its life for more than 2 years. That is over 15 dog years so we think it's worth it.

Latest update - and I swear this isn't BS (wish it was):

One of the dogs is now on a special diet for six weeks to see if he feels better...roasted duck and salmon.
