from ESPN: Warner Announces Retirement (1 Viewer)

Looks like he's planning to retire and wants to announce before the SuperBowl week to take the focus off that issue....

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner will announce Friday at a news conference whether he plans to retire, according to a Cardinals source.

The widespread assumption -- one that hasn't changed for weeks -- is that the 38-year-old Warner will step away from the game.

One possible indication of Warner's intentions is that he already has begun gathering his family so they can attend Friday's news conference at the team's training facility, according to sources.

Warner also has another added motivation for a quick decision: He has multiple promotional appearance commitments during Super Bowl week in Miami. Rather than answer retirement questions then, Warner would prefer to remove the focus from his future as quickly as possible so it's not an issue next week, according to a source....

EDITED FRIDAY Jan 29

He's retired:

The shark move is to announce the retirement just days before the Super Bowl and become the focus like Emmitt did.

I dont think Boldin was going to be there anyways. His value still is dependent on where he ends up. I think his value in Arizona takes a loss but could come back nicely in right situation.

That sound you hear is Larry Fitzgerald owners throwing up right now
Yessir...the reason I've been following it so closely. Ouchers.
no, i think the shark move would be to step in and swipe fitzgerald from people like you. he's still top 5.
On what planet? And with who throwing the ball because I have zero faith in Leinart at this point, absolute failure as an NFL QB and nothing is gonna change between now and week 1. Is Fitz the most talented WR in the NFL? Quite possibly, but with no QB to throw him the ball he becomes a bit limited. Randy Moss looked like puke in Oakland so don't say that QB play will have no impact.

One day I was flipping channels during preseason and came across a game on. It was St. Louis vs someone. Wasn't looking to watch a game but was excited for any football so I watched. A dude I had never heard of was Qb and he was throwing darts hitting his receivers on the numbers but they were dropping pass after pass, knew the drops would go away and why not take a shot on this dude late. I thought to myself, no way anyone in my league will draft this guy, no one has ever heard of him. Fantasy football wasn't so popular then, websites didn't tout him, this website wasn't even around. Most fools got their info from 3 month old fantasy mags for their draft. I don't remember who I took in the first round, I got rookie Edgerrin James in the 2nd round. I took Kurt Warner in the 14th round to a round of "Who?" :lmao: , obviously I didn't know his potential or I would have drafted him earlier, but I did see for myself and had the nads to wait to late to draft him . I rode him and Edge to the championship game. Lots of fools won their league with him that year getting him off waivers.

thanks Kurt.

It's amazing a team can go from the top of their division to the bottom of their division with the absence of one player. The Cards need to trade for a proven QB in a bad situation, they are built to win. I wonder if the Eagles would let a guy like McNabb go at the right price.

Sad to see Kurt go, but you don't hold press conferences and call your family together to say your playing another year. Uness, perhaps, you are Favre.

IMO this hurts Fitz some, but not a huge amount. More in redraft. Talent wins out. In a year, Leinart will show he can get it done or can't and they will have a QB who can. Without Boldin, I think Fitz gets a much higher percentage of fewer team passing yards.

I also think it will give some boost to Beanie, but not a whole lot. He would have had a bigger piece of the pie next year with either Kurt or Matt, but I think a big play passing offense helps RBs as much as it hurts - never 9 in the box, D-backs spread deep to cover WRs and lots more chances to score (and run in TDs) makes up for a lot of extra carries into stacked defense. If the guy can catch, I think a big passing offense often helps RBs more than it hurts.

Leinart is going to shock the world, and I've been saying it for three years in this place despite people berating me...guppies.

I still dont think there is anyway he walks from 10 million dollars, plus the fact that his team is going to be a contender again next year. 10 million dollars for one year, say that out loud and there is no way he walks.

Agree PC, but don't most QBs walk away form big money at the end? Marino was going to get a big payday to play for a year or two in Minnesota but he walked away. Lot of other QBs have followed suit. Rare that a QB has no contract remaining and just retires, not often anyways. I want Warner to continue but his press releases sound like a man who wants to hang'em up. He siad the game isn't fun anymore and he has nothing left to prove really. He will go in the HoF right or wrong.

It is nice to see a guy go out on the top of his game......HOF career IMO
Without a doubt.

If the offer is Boldin, they can have him. I think it would be a good move for the Cards to acquire Donnie Mac. Gives them a QB to contend with for the next few years while they draft a long term replacement. Any Cards fans have any interest in McNabb?

Yup. If Warner retires, McNabb to the Cards would be about as good as it could possibly get. It's not like there's a bunch of good QB's out there just waiting to end up on the Cardinals. I'm fully aware of McNabb's shortcomings but if you can name a better QB that might wind up in AZ I'd like to hear it.

Warner said he was praying to God to remove the desire to play football. Even God would probably tell him to stick around one more year for 10 Mil. Sounds like he was losing the desire to play when he asked God to remove the desire. I think he's just plain tired of football and the money doesn't seem to be a concern. Seems to have a look of indifference in his face on the sidelines. If Leinart isn't the guy to run this team I wonder how Kurt feels turning the reigns over to him. Maybe the Cards told Kurt they'd get a vet QB,other than Matty, to start next year thus making Kurt's decision to retire easier. I'm sure he's still passionate about his team and wants them to be successful. So thanks Kurt for all the great play you've given us over the years and we hate to see you go but if it's the best decision for you we understand.

Now, if Kurt retires what do the Cards do? Go for a QB early in the draft and let Leinart lame-duckly waddle through the year? Do they go after a FA QB, really not much talent available. Heard a lot say to go after McNabb which would really be an upgrade over Leinart and would still put them in line to contend for their division. Kyle Orton's a FA and would probably would like to throw to the receivers they have but not the future QB for the Cards. If they can't get McNabb I say the better option for the Cardinals would be Jason Campbell of the Redskins who many feel won't be in Shanahan's plans for 2010. Campbell as well would certainly be a better option than Leinart. If the Cards do nothing and roll with Leinart, which I'm actually hoping happens, that'll give my 49ers that much more of a chance to win the division. So with Warner expecting to retire the Cards are in a bit of a quandry. They had to know this would happen in the near future and it doesn't seem like they've prepared for it too well. We'll see what happens but my opinion is the Cards need to go after McNabb or Campbell to be their starter next season.

10 million dollars sets up his great great great grandkids. Still dont think he is going to do it.
A little bit focussed on the money, are you? When Kurt already has 20 or 30 mil (complete guess) out working for him, with that generating one or two more every year to live on ... I don't think the extra 10 makes you go back to do something as all consumming as pro football if you don't have the burning desire to do it. At some point, extra cash just doesn't matter that much any more. I think Warner is there and is done. And I say good for him to walk away when he wants to, on his own terms and at the top of his game. (And that's about all the cliches I can think of to toss in.).

It's 4 Million (not that that's not a lot of money), the 2 year contract was front loaded. Sure that's still hard to walk away from, but he has a ton of money already and one has to think he'll be capable of making big money during his retirement - as an analyst, public speaker, book deals etc.

Warner's already lined up as a speaker for the "Get Motivated" tour stop in Phoenix Feb 4th.

He only has this opportunity once in his life to make that kind of money. I can imagine once you have that type of money you start to think about the bigger things you can do with more. Whether it is 4 or 10 million you give yourself some wiggle room with bad investments and like I said earlier you set up your great great grandkids.Lets say he has banked 20 million. Not hard to imagine that he has that in liquid cash. You now have a chance to make 20% more (assuming its 4 million next year) that is hard to walk away from especially if you team is still loaded.I say no way he walks.

Even if he doesn't retire, his decision to play one more year would have nothing to do with the amount of money he is being paid.

You can't say this about many athletes, but you can about Warner: The money for him is secondary. It's nice, but it's secondary.

keep hope alive, keep hope alive. and Leinart was going to start last year too, and then when Warner was put in he was going to fall on his face in a matter of weeks. Two years later.....

What's done is done. Moving along, how does the Cardinals salary cap situation look for 2010? I'm assuming this is a nice chunk of change cleared out of the way.

How far does Fitz drop in redraft rankings this year if Leinart starts the season?
People will show you stats that say Larry doesn't drop very far without Kurt. For all of us who have watched Leianrt we know the sayings "stats don't lie" sometimes isn't completely true. I think Larry show drop from about #3-#5 to about #7-#10.

Great great respect for this guy. I hate to see him retire but he's going out in the manner I think most would want to. Big fan, Kurt. :lmao:

I don't see the McNabb to Cards connection.

How about C Pennington? UFA, cerebral, accurate, and a good leader.

Cards go to the run first and shorter passing game.

Warner wasn't going as deep this year compared to the past.

J Campbell is a good choice for an up and coming team but the Cards

are contenders right now. Bring in competition to push Leinart-hard.

Real wild prediction -J Garcia or B Leftwich.
