I stalled in that same range. Have you had a cheat day every 8 or 9 days? After I was stuck in that range I had a cheat day to take myself out of starvation mode, and it really seemed to click. Not sure of if "starvation mode" science is real but it does seem to have impacted me.
My discipline over the last month has been... wanting. Exercise has been good and I feel my legs finally coming back on the bike. Fair trade. I'm still down 25lbs over the last 6 months, so it is coming off, if slow.

4 months progress, 105 lb lost: https://imgur.com/gallery/IV6uAHc

I have got to start lifting weights. If I hit goal weight like this it's going to be recovering meth addict stages of gaunt.
My wife weighs 105. :lmao: That's Incredible.
It's that your way of subtly saying you'd also like to lose 105 pounds?
Just amazed at the magnitude of what Hags has accomplished. He's lost a human sized amount of weight. That's astounding.

Anyone tried the GLP-1's for weight loss? Ozempic, Wegovy, etc. The results have been pretty remarkable. The drug manufacturers are also researching the potential cardiac benefits of these drugs.

I haven’t but know two different people who have and both had good success. The thing that is confusing for me (as someone who doesn’t follow it closely) - why is there a shortage for so long with some of them and why won’t insurance cover for weight loss? Knowing how much obesity impacts health it seems like a no-brainer to cover it.

Not claiming any expertise here, but I believe the shortages came about as a result of the drugs being utilized for off-label usage. In other words, these drugs were developed to control diabetes, but once they were shown to be really effective with weight loss, the demand for the drugs skyrocketed among non-diabetics, thus creating the shortages.

I’m even further from being an expert but seems like these shortages have gone on for a while- just seems weird that these companies can’t get enough with demand so high.

Health insurance companies are the bane of the USA. Medicare has an administrative rate of 2%. Many health care companies run well over 40%. They exist for profit only. Nothing else. Nothing. Just have a relative in critical care for a few months to see how bad it is. The care is atrocious even at the best hospiitals w the best doctors. Do you think your insurance company really wants you alive if you are costing them $8K+ per day in a hospital? Your doctors (most do care) and hospital might (so the hospital can keep charging), but they are all beholden to what the insurance companies allow them to do. The US healthcare is simply a mess with the insurance companies in the pockets of politicians. Just like in most other things.

I stopped paying for anything except the highest deductible plan I can. It was costing me $2400/month for me and my wife. Now it's like $1200, which is there mainly to cover max out of pocket for serious diseases, hospital stays, etc which could easily go into the hundreds of thousands. With the extra $1200/month I can buy Ozempic from overseas ($500 for a 6 week packet), we added a VIP plan with our doc for $450/quarter which means they see us immediately and will do prescriptions over the phone, and some of our docs charge us less now that they don't charge our insurance. Even with the poor co-pay situation and paying for blood tests, etc ... still come out way ahead with far better service and understanding of actual costs.

As for GLP-1s, I've had several friends drop 50+ lbs in ~4 months from Wegovy. With Ozempic the results are good but less, only because the dosage is less. I started a couple of weeks ago. Lost a few lbs, but am told it doesn't kick in until I move to the higher dosage after 4 weeks. If you search hard enough it's cheaper from overseas sources. In the US you are pretty much paying $900/month for Oz and $1300/month for Wegovy. Heck, you can buy a flight to Costa Rica, stay in a hotel for 3-4 days, and get Oz for $130/month. It also costs 40% less in Europe. Anywhere in the US, you are overpaying for no reason other than people will pay it.

Thankfully, I don’t need it and if I’m being honest I would be leery of taking it because I’m leery of being on any meds regularly - but, for those who truly need it (diabetic and/or obese) then it seems like a great drug. Hoping it can help you!

Back in May 2022, my A1C was 12.5

Was just checked on Friday; results came back today: 5.5 (below 5.7 is considered 'normal')

Still taking Metformin for now.

It's been a tough trip....
Just saw this - fantastic work! Metformin seems like a pretty safe drug - I don't think I'd be in a rush to get off of it if you aren't having any reactions to it. Seems like it has come up in a couple podcasts as potentially beneficial for longevity and cancer.

I've had no bad reactions to it.

Though I do have a 30-45 minute 'buzz' hit me after I take it.

Doctors think I'm imagining it.

What do I know...they're the experts

Staying out of the political arena, but want to point out that the cost of these is about $1300/mo in the US and $250/mo in Germany and similar places. That is massively expensive and I can see insurers balking at that price tag.

That said I've read articles on these that a lot of folks get off of them pretty quickly. Very expensive, very significant side effects, and a propensity to gain it all back when you get off of them. It just isn't a panacea. The heart benefits are consistent with general weight loss. So a lot of folks are getting off of these and doing it the hard way.

Wegovy is the real deal. I've been on it for 7 weeks and lost about 20 pounds so far.

You really don't feel hunger pangs at all. I'm trying to eat a more normal and healthy diet that is sustainable after I'm off wegovy, but if I wanted I could eat even less and lose more weight. Easiest diet I've ever been on.

Just to add to this I just heard an ad on the radio from Morgan and Morgan (our big ambulance chaser outfit) soliciting people who have had "significant stomach issues" with Ozempic or Wegovy to call because "they may be owed compensation".

So the shyster lawyers are now homing in on these drugs. That's a bad sign.

Better food the last two days. Still need to get back to the gym. Going this morning after I drop the kid off at school.
8/8/23 292.00

Feels a bit low. Probably some dehydration and pretty hungry. Hopefully can maintain over the next few days. I'm coming for you 28X.
Was 293.0 on 8/11. I consider Thursdays kind of my official weigh in day. Getting to the gym has been pretty non-existent the last couple of weeks. I think once a week. Also had some fast food lately with busy life stuff going on. Decided to check today and was pleasantly surprised at 291.4. I figured I'd be up a couple pounds at least.
8/16/23 289.6

Kinda sorta don't believe it. We'll see if it holds for Thursday "official" weigh in day but I'll take it.
8/17/23 289.0

Cool
8/24/23 288.6

Not a great week food wise. Also pretty much zero activity. Somehow I willed myself to be slightly down instead of up a pound or two that I expected. Probably lack of water.

Next doctor appointment is a month out complete with bloodwork. Time to recommit and get serious. Would love to see if I can get to 280. Even more important I need that A1C number to drop. After I eat my 2 McDonald's egg McMuffins that is. I've largely stayed away from fast food but have allowed myself a little here and there and am treating myself this morning.

July 2022: Weighed in at 268 with a plan to lose weight. I don't think I stuck with it for more than a week.

July 15th 2023: Weighed in at 261.4

August 6th 2023: Weighed in at 243.4
------------

August 24th 2023: Weighed in at 237.6

So, I lost 18 pounds in the first 22 days, but have only lost about 6 pounds in the past 18 days. Down 23.8 pounds total in 40 days. Calorie wise, I'm eating about 1,100 calories per day (Nurtisystem) and tracking via MyFitnessPal. I have yet to have any cheat meals or treats, and haven't missed a day of exercise yet either.

Starting August 17th, I changed my workout from 3 miles on the treadmill at 3mph to doing an hour on the elliptical machine, I'm not sure how accurate the machine is, but I usually complete between 4.5-4.75 miles on the elliptical in that hour.

Have I hit a plateau, or after my initial drop, am I just now getting into the "normal" rate of weight loss, that I can expect moving forward?

I think there is going to be a natural slow down. I just hit the 12 week mark of exercise/eating with purpose. I lost 17 pounds in the first 4 weeks and 10 pounds over the next 8 weeks. Over those 8 weeks, 2 I've gone backwards (1.3 and 2.2lbs). I think it is just sticking to the plan, recording what works for you, and realizing it took us quite a few years to add on the pounds.

I'd try to play it as a directional game. Work in 5lb increments. When you hit 235, aim for 230, but don't let 245 hit your scale again. If it hits 240, you have an emergency protocol (you pick - for me it is a day of salad and eggs and no salt). Keep the trend line pointing down and pick some future dates and targets that seem realistic. Keep up the good work!

Another step in the right direction, no matter how small! You have really made tremendous progress. Keep making the next right decision.

Great job first of all! In my charts, you will see dramatic weight loss the first couple of weeks, then it levels off. A lot of that is just water weight of course. My normal daily calories are around 1450, plus I added a cheat day once every 8 or 9 days once I hit the same plateau that you are talking about. It seems to have jump started me. I'm not going bonkers on my cheat day, just eating well above my normal target (say 2500 to possibly 3000 calories 1 day). It seems to take your body out of starvation mode.

Exercise wise I've been pretty consistent with a spin class on Monday nights and weight training on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Tue - Thu at lunch we usually walk about 1.5 round trip. Saturdays I try to do something active but not super consistent with that (and it has just been a wet oven in Alabama).

Keep up the great work!

Great advice and pretty similar to my journey. Don't sweat the small weekly losses, doctors really don't recommend more than a 2 pound drop per week. It's all about not having the disaster week (or month) and sending things out of control.

So, not a great eating week for me :) Joint birthday I cooked out, then had leftover hamburgers and hotdogs (and chips and cake). I'm always torn between nutrition and value. I know I should value nutrition more and not worry about "wasting" that food, but I struggle to overcome my upbringing. Ate a lot Monday and Tuesday (but not what I would call insane) and jumped up 3 pounds. Rebounded good yesterday, but then had an event at my church tonight and overate from the buffet. Plan to get back to it this weekend.

Slow is better. You didn’t gain the weight overnight, so you shouldn’t expect to lose it quickly.

Body composition tends to be more favorable when you lose slowly, and conventional wisdom holds you’re more likely to keep the weight off.

Hit my goal - 179.4 this morning but then I’ve been hungry all day and eaten more than usual. I’ll be back up over 180 tomorrow for sure but nice to see the progress. If I’d stop pouring a whiskey every day I’d be couple more pounds down.

Mixed results the last two weeks. Eating has been good, drinking bad (not really bad, bad but with the Fall season beers released I’ve been a weak man). 179.8 this morning - so, maintained my goal of sub-180 and leave today for my trip. I’m going to enjoy the next 6 days but try to not go too crazy. Next goal is to be 170 on 9/28 when I do my next AT segment.

LET’S GO!!!!

I understand the conventional wisdom. But, for example, working my *** off all week and still seeing 203 on the scale this morning sucks balls. I really want to drop to 1XX and my body has been hovering on the precipice for forever. And then lose another 25 this winter.

my next AT segment.
What segment? You're likely to lose during this trip, so you have that to look forward to.

Will be covering the Smokies early September and then finish it early October. I wanted to do the full thing in one shot but couldn’t make the logistics work.

I’m going to enjoy the next 6 days but try to not go too crazy. Next goal is to be 170 on 9/28 when I do my next AT segment.

LET’S GO!!!!
Great job! Enjoy your trip!

Slow is better. You didn’t gain the weight overnight, so you shouldn’t expect to lose it quickly.

Body composition tends to be more favorable when you lose slowly, and conventional wisdom holds you’re more likely to keep the weight off.
I understand the conventional wisdom. But, for example, working my *** off all week and still seeing 203 on the scale this morning sucks balls. I really want to drop to 1XX and my body has been hovering on the precipice for forever. And then lose another 25 this winter.
This is why I’m not a fan of frequent weighings. While it helps some people, others are discouraged by unfavorable numbers that might be reflective of water weight, lack of BM, etc.

I prefer checking no more frequently than monthly, to get a better picture of long term changes. On the 75 Hard challenge, I checked 3 times, for example.

Anyone tried the GLP-1's for weight loss? Ozempic, Wegovy, etc. The results have been pretty remarkable. The drug manufacturers are also researching the potential cardiac benefits of these drugs.
I mentioned these drugs in the Fred: Kevzilla walking on thread a while ago. They work, with about 10-15% weight loss, on average. Some people lose a lot more, and a small % don’t respond. They promote early satiety and make people nauseated initially, though the latter usually eases up.

There are more potent drugs coming out that rival bariatric surgery results, but for now, the drugs beat the weight loss most people get from lifestyle changes. I favor all three concomitantly, for obese people who’ve failed initial diet/exercise, especially if they have risk factors for vascular disease (most obese people do). Or have diabetes.

There’s probably a role starting them early, even for overweight BMIs (25-30), with no other health problems.

And the drug class has been around a while (the first in the class was FDA approved in 2005), so I wouldn’t worry too much about long term safety.

1. Shortages exists because pharmaceutical regulation and manufacturing infrastructure are broken, and have been for a while. Some of the problems are delineated Here. While many of the reasons apply to generic medications, GLPs are in such high demand manufacturers can‘t keep up - as it turns out, we have a lot of people who want to lose weight.

2. Only Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss. Insurers are reluctant to approve meds for off-label use, in the event a late adverse effect crops up, and comes back to legally bite then.

Insurers also aren‘t great at estimating the savings of preventative healthcare.

So, after a week of less than disciplined eating, I was really pleasantly surprised with my weight this morning. I felt for sure this was going to be the week I gained weight instead of lost weight (of course I did that once already with the mission trip). Leftovers from the birthday party led to bad eating Sunday and Monday, a vendor brought us lunch from a chicken place Thursday, and on Saturday my son took us out to eat at the pizza place his girlfriend works at. Didn't go crazy but was definitely taking in more than my target.

awesome thread. I started my journey 11 days ago. I'm 5-10, 255 pounds, and 46 years old. Joined the gym with my thirteen year old son. It's been a great bonding experience and I already feeling better . my goal is to get under 200 pounds by next June. So, 55 pounds over 10 months.
All right, one month in, down to 244 pounds. Lost 11 pounds so far. Feeling great.

Better food the last two days. Still need to get back to the gym. Going this morning after I drop the kid off at school.

8/31/23 - 288.4

Flatlined the past two weeks. Broken record but I need to be a little more conscious with food and gotta get moving.

I hit those same plateaus, a reasonable "cheat" day worked for me. Lets the body know that food is around so you don't have to shut down. Stay with your program and the results will come.

I just really don't have an explanation but I've dropped quite a few in the last couple of days. The last 2 weeks were still steady, with just under a pound lost both weeks. This week was a jump start. Sticking with the diet and being consistent with my 3 night workouts and walks during the other days. I'm actually in the "zone" I was looking for between 190 and 195. I'll just stay on the plan as I feel good (not hungry) and see if I can drop into the 180s. May explore ramping up weight exercise to get better toned, but I'm also dealing with tennis elbow and the doctor said rest was the best thing for it.

absolutely. And it's cool to see his transformation and his self-confidence growing.

Ok I know I've been joking and all just got back from a week long softball tournament for my kid. Her final one ever. Scale this morning was heaviest I ever been. 235. Looking at pictures I look gross. Didn't even recognize myself. I am fully in.

My goals. 10 pounds by 9/1. That should be easy since I'm bloated right now. 20 pounds by 10/1. 25 pounds by 11/1. 30 pounds by 12/1. Hold 30 until 1/1. 40 pounds by 2/15.. 50 by 4/1. 60 by this time next year

I'm tired of being the guy I used to tease about
got sidetracked with some impromptu vacations

up to 236 at some point did not hit my intended goal 1 but progress is on its way.

9/4 229

A lot easier to stay focused now summer is over and no more planned trips for a while. SO i am at 7 pounds. Could still outside shot hitting the 10/1 goal

It is great to have the long term goals, but don't let those distract you. They can seem overwhelming if it is too far out of sight, and you may be tempted to just give it all up. Focus on the next day and week ahead. You will lose a lot of water weight when you really start, but then the real weight loss (safe) will be about 2 pounds per week. Keep that steady pace. Good luck!

If anyone is looking for Protein Bar recommendations, Quest Hero bars used to be my go to and they're still great but a brand called Barbells have taken the title. These things are amazing. If you get any sweet tooth cravings, they help alleviate the urge. They basically taste like a Millky Way or Snickers. They really do. Solid macros and a great snack imo (200 calories, 20g protein, low sugar). A game changer for those that can't stomach traditional protein bars. Creamy Crisp has been my go to flavor:
