Furnace issue - who is resposible for this? (1 Viewer)

We are experiencing insufficient hot water right now. Sometimes its hot, other times its cold.

I called our oil company to come fix it. They came and replace a mixture valve. The next day I took a shower and the water was cold again.

Now I just got the bill for $80 for the valve, but it didn't solve the problem.

Do I have to pay them the $80?

I am confused what they fixed. Do they own the water heater? Can you explain why you wouldn't be responsible for payment on work complete?

sorry If I am mixing up the terms.

We have an oil burner (is that the name)? I have a contract with my oil company who installed this burner about 15 years ago.

Lately we have notice that the water isn't staying hot for too long, so I called the oil company to look at the oil burner.

They decided it was a mixing valve that was the problem, but it didn't fix the problem and they are trying to charge me money for the part they replaced.

Am I responsible in any way for the cost of the replacement part?

i guess you would have to look at your contract to see if you are responsible for replacement parts? I would definitely try to make the argument the installation guy didn't know what he was doing so you don't want to pay for his mistake. Although, at the end of the day, it is somewhat like a mechanic. When they are trouble shooting an issue the generally start with the cheapest fix first. They may not guess correctly the first time so there has to be some latitude given.

You called your oil company to fix a problem with hot water?
And it somehow has something to do with the furnace?
People have furnaces with oil?

Is this 1890's Norway?
Pretty common here in the NW.
Common here in North Carolina, too. The house we just bought has one.
but do the furnaces heat water?
Yes. My in-laws family own a farmhouse in VT that uses heating oil. The furnace heats water for the radiant heating, and a separate tank heats water for normal use.

The house was built in the 1940s, and heating upgrades happened in 1980s.

Indirect Water Heaters....that's the phrase i was looking for

Had a similar problem with ours back in December. The furnace wasn't heating water consistently. They replaced the mixture valve at first but that didn't work. Turned out to be the flux capacitor. It's a difficult repair so they were reluctant to do it at first. Guy was lazy and didn't want to spend the time.Call your oil company and insist they come out and replace the flux capacitor. I suspect they'll hesitate at first but don't take no for an answer.

If it's not the mixing valve most likely it is the thermostat in your water holding tank. The mixing valve isn't a bad idea for the problem, and$ 80 for a new one is not robbery. I would pay it unless your contract says something different.
