future stud wr in SD? (1 Viewer)

so who are people betting on next yr in SD, Naanee or Floyd? with all indications that this is chambers last season in SD, can either of these guys become a reliable WR2 in that offense? or do you think SD with draft another wr?

My money is on Naanee. He's younger, and the kid makes some freakishly athletic catches. Floyd has had trouble staying healthy, but he'll be in the mix too.As stated above, they drafted another WR in Byrd. From what I remember, Byrd would have been a 2nd or 3rd rounder, but got into a car accident and dropped like a stone down to the 7th (iirc). He is spending this year rehabbing.EDIT:From a FBG's email update this summer:
SD - WR Byrd motivated to contributeSource: Casey Pearce, Chargers.comCasey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers WR Demetrius Byrd, chosen in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, continues to recover from the automobile accident that landed him in the hospital two weeks ago and is motivated to eventually contribute to the team. 'Now that I have survived an accident and was drafted by the Chargers, I have so much motivation to play with this team,' Byrd recently said through his agent David Dunn. 'I appreciate the Chargers for recognizing my hard work and helping me live out this dream. I promise you that I will work hard every day on and off the field.'[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]Before the start of the 2008 college football season many considered Byrd to be a 1st day pick. As the QBs for LSU struggled, so did the entire passing game and Byrd's draft stock went on the decline. The Chargers picked him up in the 7th round despite the fact he was in a serious car accident the week before the draft. Byrd has been released from the hospital and if he regains his form the Chargers could have a late round steal on their hands.

That is a good question. Naanee has looked good in spots this season but not as good as Floyd last season and something to consider with Floyd is that he is scheduled to be a UFA next year.

Floyd has 7-178 this year and had 27-465-4TD last season. Will they just let him go without trying him in a starting role to see what he can do?

My guess is that they extend V-Jax and Chambers leaves at the end of 2009. I think Floyd takes Chamber's outside spot and Naanee plays in the slot. Who has more production is anybodys guess at this point. I "think" we'll see Floyd with bigger games but inconsistent scoring from week to week while Naanee is more consistent week to week. So Naanee would probably be a safer bet in PPR leagues.

Naanee has that "freakish" look to him (meant as a compliment), and has more upside than Floyd. He's a big athlete with speed and has good hands. Floyd is big, and is a good target in the red zone, he is strong and does use his body well. Floyd will be 29 years old by the time the 2010 season starts.

I think there is a good chance Floyd will be starting at some point this year. So they will try him out. He just had 5 targets last week, after having only 8 targets in the first 4 games. Perhaps a sign of things to come...

Floyd is too much like VJax. I think they will spend a mid round pick on someone to fill the role Buster Davis was supposed to fill.

I've liked Naanee since he was drafted, but leaving him completely out of the equation...

Floyd is 28 years old, in his 5th season, and has 59 career catches - including seven in five games so far this year.

While Floyd was on the roster he was passed by VJax and the Chargers brought in a near-defunct Chris Chambers, who started in front of him.

I think Floyd's a nice complementary piece (esp since he was an UDFA), but he's had tons of opportunity in SD (with no one of note in front of him) and through five years he hasn't been able to take the #2 WR spot.

In addition, the assumption in SD from the bits that I've followed recently is that both Chambers and Floyd will not be there next year.

I agree. He was more involved last week and I think that was a foreshadowing of things to come. I like him a lot as a sleeper pick this week.

Both of these guys would be huge upgrades from Chambers in the starting lineup NOW. I have no idea why Chambers is even on the SD roster.

Last week, it was almost as if Floyd was starting.Didn't even notice Chambers on the field til much later than Floyd.

I don't think there's a quality #2 WR on this team.

Whoever the "future stud" that may be playing across from VJax in the future will have to come outta the draft or FA, cause they aren't currently rostered.

The body of work produced by Floyd is significantly better than Naanee, up to this point.

But, my perception is that this is a result of Floyd being more NFL ready when he came into the league.

I do not think it's because Floyd has superior talent.

But...I think the gap is starting to narrow...and I think by next year, Naanee will be routinely more involved in the game plan than Floyd.

I think that if your evaluation of the two is focused on stats...you'll favor Floyd. But, if you evaluate them based on watching them play...I think you'll quickly see Naanee as potentially special. He plays strong. Reminds me some of Boldin.

I agree that either/both would be an upgrade to Chambers at this point. But, if you can only take a flier on one, my money is on Legedu.

Naanee and Floyd are obviously completely different WRs. Naanee has a career ypr of 8.9, while Floyd's is 16.9. You compared Naanee to Boldin, whose career ypr is 12.8. To me, Naanee reminds me of a guy best suited for a slot WR and possibly an H-back kind of role.If Naanee was the #2 and played a lot of snaps split wide in 2 WR sets, his ypr would presumably go up, as would his TD opportunities. But Floyd seems better suited to being an outside WR, and Naanee better suited to the slot. And that seems to be how the Chargers are using them this year.By game:Game 1 - Naanee had 27 snaps - 16 in the slot and 11 wide; Floyd had 6 snaps - 3 in the slot and 3 wideGame 2 - Naanee had 29 snaps - 22 in the slot, 6 wide, and 1 at H-back; Floyd had 8 snaps - all wideGame 3 - Naanee had 23 snaps - 12 in the slot and 11 wide; Floyd had 23 snaps - 2 in the slot and 21 wideGame 4 - Naanee had 23 snaps - 17 in the slot and 6 wide; Floyd had 26 snaps - 3 in the slot and 23 wideGame 5 - Player Participation Log not yet available at profootballfocusNot including game 5, Naanee has had roughly 2/3 of his snaps in the slot. Meanwhile, Floyd has had more than 80% of his snaps wide. I think when the log is available for game 5, it will confirm this trend. I also think it will confirm the trend of Floyd's snaps increasing. As someone said, he was very visible early in the game. That data above would be even more interesting if we could tell where the players were lined up on plays when they were targeted. I suspect Naanee was targeted much more when he was in the slot than when he was outside, and vice versa for Floyd. If the Chargers view Naanee as the likely successor to Chambers as the #2, I'm not sure why they aren't using him outside more, since that will be an important part of his job... it would seem that he needs to gain more experience out there.I have been higher than most everyone around here on Floyd, and I think he has great potential. His problems are age and durability. However, if he holds up and plays well this season, I think the Chargers could probably sign him to a reasonably priced contract to keep him, and keep Naanee in the slot. Then they would be set at WR and could focus their efforts elsewhere, since they need help everywhere except QB and TE. I think there is a good chance this will happen. If so, unfortunately from a fantasy perspective, the presence of Jackson, Gates, and good receiving RBs will probably continue to limit Floyd and Naanee next year and beyond. For disclosure, I picked up Floyd in my dynasty league last week and plan to hold him while it plays out. Naanee was available earlier this season (not last week), but I passed.
