Game Thread -Divisionals-Pittsburgh V Indianapolis (2 Viewers)

I think Dungy's calm, even-keeled demeanor really helps in situations like this. The players can look to their coach and calm down despite the big hole they were in. I can only imagine what it would be like if Mora was still there. ;)

Quick question. At what point do they start taking half the distance to the goal line? An offsides on the 6 yard line gives them room to get to the 1 right? But it obviously doesn't happen that way.

Did anyone see Manning telling the crowd to be quiet as soon as the flag was thrown for Indy's false start. The Indy crowd is still making too much noise while their team is on offense. Idiots.

Lot o' Stillers fans there too.

Does the NFL ever wonder if it is wrong that at 3rd and goal at the 1, the offense gets a 5 yard penalty and then the def gets a 5 yard penalty that it is goofy to be 3rd and goal at the 3?

They should change the 1/2 the distance penalties if the yardage allowed for the foul still wouldn't put the ball into the endzone. Similar penalties on both teams and the Dolts lost 2 yards in the transaction.

the def got indy 1/2way to the goal

At any point where the penalty would exceed 1/2 the distance. So at the 29, a 15 yard penalty is 14 1/2.

actually i think they should make the rule to be, if a defensive penalty would be half the distance, than a similar distance offensive penalty should be half the distance away from the goal line.

I know that and understand that but it is still goofy to have equal penalties hurt 1 team worse. I know how it got there but was curious if the NFL ever explained why equal penalties can hurt one team worse.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Once the penalty length is more than half the distance to the goal for anything but a spot foul (i.e. pass interference), they assess half the distance to the goal as the penalty.

You mean twice the distance?

That wouldn't fix the problem. False start from the 4 would be 2 yard penalty moving it back to the 6. Same yardage penalty on the def then would be 3 yards moving the ball to the 4. Still hurts 1 team more for an equal yardage penalty.

You are Peyton ManningYou are down 14-0You have 3rd and goal from the 3You haven't sustain a drive the whole game until nowand you call a sweep? This is the playoffs bud, decisions like this will keep your title as the best QB in the regular season.

One way to think about it is that the rule never changes:The penalty yardage is always the smaller of the textbook yard penalty or half the distance to the goal.

So a 10 yard penalty at the 40 would be a 10 yard penalty (since 10 < 20) but a 10 yard penalty at the 10 would be a 5 yard penalty (since 5 < 10).

Terrible sequence for the Colts there. Why run it on 3rd and goal from the 3 if you aren't going to go for it on 4th?
I'd imagine they'd go for it on 4th if the third down play had been more successful.

In the first matchup, Ben threw an INT in the final 30 seconds of the first half that gave Indy 3 points.I'll take a 14-3 halftime lead and be happy with it.

Anyone care to predict the final score? The way this game has gone, I think Indy makes a comeback, but the Steelers hold on to win 20-17. Indy has just done very little to make me think they will win. If they had scored a touchdown on that last drive, maybe, but they did not.
