Game Thread W13 - San Francisco V Seattle (1 Viewer)

3rd and goal at the 1, you have Frank Gore, obviously the smart play is 2 pass plays in a row with Alex Smith. :kicksrock:

Not a fan of SF abandoning the running game. Almost ended up with no points there after 2 possessions in Seahawks territory. Bailed out by the VD TD.

Obvious PI. Incredible non-call on 4th and goal cost the 49ers.
Seahawks EVERY TEAM IN THE NFL have had some bad PI calls go against them this year, that was a BIG makeup call. pile of crap. Hopefully that's the only atrocious call/noncall from the refs.
I didn't mean to imply that it was on purpose or overly deserving. I was being sardonic. I don't like makeup calls anyway, I'd rather see the refs get the calls right, not compound mistakes. That said, the Hawks have had several prominent calls go against them in key games (Chicago game in particular with 2 scoring plays that shouldn't have been) and PI calls against Trufant have been a joke.

Anyone know where I can get a much smaller version of Singletary's parka? Looks like the guy is wearing a cali-king sleeping bag.

Nice play Bly.
Or maybe a horrible play where he got smoked and Hasselbeck saved him with a horribly underthrown ball. But he should get credit for his hustle getting back to the ball. I wonder what his coach says to him when he gets back to the sideline? "Nice play", or maybe "How about we don't allow the guy to run by you next time".

4 rushes for Gore in a half? What's going on? Are they trying not to win?
Their O-line hasn't been able to open holes for Gore for a few weeks now. I'll agree that it's a hilariously lopsided offense, but it's been the most successful O they've had all year.

What I don't understand is how they think this is benefitting the team in the long run.
How is it hurting them?
Because:1. That sort of extreme split isn't viable long-term/over the course of an entire season2. It likely won't continue into next year, meaning you're squandering valuable opportunities for growth with young players3. It isn't helping Alex Smith overcome his struggles in traditional formations, making it difficult to assess the future of the position

6 punts in 6 drives now. It's obvious when they're going to run because they come out of the shotgun offense to give it to Gore. Terrible play calling, reminds me of the Bears.

Nick Reed has a nose for the ball and some serious drive to excel. He'll never be a starter but when he's in he just makes plays.

Agreed, but this situation is in large part due to the injuries on the O-line.

2. It likely won't continue into next year, meaning you're squandering valuable opportunities for growth with young players

The first part is also true, but the young players that most need experience are primarily Alex Smith and the receivers, and they're getting a lot of work with this play calling.

3. It isn't helping Alex Smith overcome his struggles in traditional formations, making it difficult to assess the future of the position

Unfortunately, there isn't time during the week to help him with learning to play better under center. So, in real game time, Singletary has to let Alex play in what he is most comfortable. And this has shown a lot more about Alex than the previous offense ever hoped to.
Nope, I think it's the right thing to do. Alex Smith getting confidence like he is will help this team immensely more than shoehorning him into a traditional offense at this stage of his development. And of course they try a regular run while I'm typing this, and Gore Fumbles. Doesn't prove my point, but it definitely doesn't hurt it.

Since you agree with what I said about an extreme run/pass split being not viable long-term, I'm not sure why this discussion is even happening. I think if they're going to utilize this offense, they need to be more creative with their runs. Where are the draw plays? The quick screens to Gore? Etc. Still, even if you think it’s awesome that Smith gains confidence in this sort of extreme situation, what’s the most beneficial to your franchise? Finding out that Smith is completely shotgun-reliant in July, or finding out eight months earlier and giving yourself a chance to address it in the offseason?
