Game Thread W16 - Detroit V San Francisco (1 Viewer)

What an awful first drive for the 49ers

Alex Smith sacked on 1st play

Frank Gore 1 yard Rush

Alex Smith with a late handoff to Gore for a 5 yard loss

Pretty quick first quarter.

Calvin heavily involved for Detroit, for those fantasy owners brave/desperate enough to start him. Stanton looking okay; regardless he'd an improvement over Culpepper. Lions again looking decent against the run, but very susceptible to the long play.

Detroit does a good enough job to hold SF to a FG. Lions defending a lot better that you'd expect, but I'm surprised that the 49ers didn't put in Gore's hands at least once that drive. Of course, maybe I shouldn't be....

following game on net.

what is it with all these 1 and 2 yard pass completions for smith? that's like 4 of them.

Looks like Gore was shaken up on that 11-yard completion to Crabtree. He's been on the sideline since. No update yet (other to note it), but if I hear anything, I'll let you know.

Detroit's D has actually been getting a lot of pressure -- 3 or 4 tipped balls and several times where Smith has had to get rid of it quickly. And now a blocked FG after calling a TO to "freeze" the new kicker. Looks like Detroit will escape a 3 turnover half down 6-3, thanks to the D.

26 passes to 7 runs for SF in the first half. Great. I think they are trying to get Smith 2 years worth of experience this year.

are you surprised? they said they wanted to see what they had in smith in the last two games of the season. pretty sure they know whether or not he can hand off to gore.

And Detroit's first penalty prevents their biggest gain so far... Another 3 and out. Great game, if you like punts.

TD Davis? -- Detroit's challenging that Smith was across the line of scrimmage. Hard to tell from the only angle they've shown us so far.

Why throw it? I don't know if this will stand but either way it pretty much tells you what kind of smarts Smith is working with. Incredibly dumb.

you are the one delivering pizza's. Big Vern was wide open in the endzone and Smith was about to get drilled if he tried to run it in.

I deliver pizzas?Anyway, I'm not sure if he was going to be hit. Even if he was, you take the sure thing, if you are worried about getting hit you may want to think about a career change.

Arguably, he was only wide open in the end zone because Smith had crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing it (although there wasn't conclusive video evidence of this)

Another bad pass = INT for Stanton. He had Calvin open, and could've had a TD if he'd hit him in stride.

Culpepper warming up after Stanton throws a 3rd INT. I doubt it matters for this game, but I'd almost prefer they leave in Stanton, as Drew at least has a chance to be playing for the Lions next year. I guess we'll see if Daunte has any spark left in him.

I would hope not. He sucks. Won't be a starter, and would be a terrible backup. Even as a 3rd QB you want somebody with upside, not someone who has already proven he doesn't have it and never will.

Drew Stanton can`t play in this league..even as a backup. Another brilliant second rd steal from Matt Millen.
Ehh. They only bypassed Sidney Rice, LaMarr Woodley, David Harris, and Steve Smith to take him. So not like they lost anything really. Granted Rice and Smith are maybe unexpected results, but a lot of people were clamoring for Woodley or Harris with that pick.
