Game Thread W7 - Baltimore v Miami (1 Viewer)

Wow. Chad Pennington just made one of the stupidest plays you will ever see. Panicked under a rush, throws a pick six trying to avoid the sack. He wasn't playing that well anyway but at least it was tied.

Dolphins mount a nice drive following the turnover but on third-and-eleven at the BAL 12, Miami just runs it into the line content to settle for a FG. Strange.

The Ratbirds have done a pretty good job defending the wildcat in the first half but the key to them winning this one may still be a very patched together O-line giving Flacco a little time to work the intermediate passing game. Playing pitch and catch with Mason for 8-10 yards a pop is when they're at their most effective.

Pennington played poorly in the first half. Missed wide open guys in the end zone, overthrew passes, and had that disastrous INT returned for the TD.

Ratbirds put together a pretty decent drive to open the second half but have to settle for 3 when Flacco misses a wide open Heap in the end zone -- on 2 successive plays.

Very slick (and easy) 74-yard TD drive there by the Fins. Pennington was finding guys running loose with good accuracy. A one score ballgame midway through the 3rd.

Yeah, that was a huge break for Miami. Pennington suddenly caught fire and Miami drove down the field fairly quickly for a TD they had to have.

If the Fins dig out of this deep hole and get a score here, all of the momentum will be on their side. The wildcat may not be working but Chad is finding his mid-range targets. Those are not great CBs on the purple side of the LOS.

MIA badly defenses an obvious screen on third-and-long and McGahee takes it almost all the way for a TD but MIA strips the ball and recovers inside their own five.

And that was the Ratbirds' most explosive drive, with Rice getting another big gainer on another screen.

McGahee TD probably ices it for the Ravens. The pass to Mason on third-and-long was the backbreaker on that drive. MIA couldn't get a stop when they needed one.

Two untimely penalties contributed as well. But the Ravens did move the ball pretty well in each of the last two drives, when this game was very much in doubt, and that has to be kinda disappointing for the Fins.

First win on the road for Baltimore this season and probably their most satisfying win as Miami showed much more life than did the Browns and Bengals. Rex Ryan had the answer for the Wildcat and a makeshift offensive line gave Joe reasonable protection and dominated the LOS in the fourth quarter to protect and expand the lead. Good production from the 3-headed backfield of McGahee, Rice and McClain, all of whom contributed key plays in this game.

After watching the Ravens get annihilated last week (and self-destruct in the loss to Pittsburgh), the Fins have to be pretty disappointed here as this one probably looked like a home win for them when they were analyzing the schedule at the beginning of the year. Still, they look a lot better than they did in 2007, despite the fact that they beat the Ravens then.

Going almost unnoticed in this game was perhaps Harbaugh's first bold move as a coach -- benching Chris McAlister for ineffectiveness. We all saw McAlister get lit up by Marvin Harrison the week before and rumors out of camp were that he hadn't been practicing well so he was asked to take a seat against the Fins. With no Samari Rolle in the lineup either, the Ravens got away with it against Chad Pennington but this exposes a potential weakness down the line against the better QBs they're gonna face.
