he'll definitely be on the roster. They'll cut Bennett before they'll let him go.wouldn't overpay, looks like he's behind Bennett in the pecking order at this momentcould be tough for him to win a roster spot if they keep both Hester/Tolbert. Hester could always serve as the #4 RB
the announcers watching the game yesterday seemed to disagree with you and mentioned that he needed to make plays to make this roster. Not sure where you are getting your information? I tend to listen to beat writers and guys close to team such as the hometown TV guys that have been in production meetings with the coaching staffhe'll definitely be on the roster. Bloom and Cecil have been very high on Gartrell, but of course for 2010 or 2011. He can still sit a year on their taxi squad without a lot of concern.the announcers watching the game yesterday seemed to disagree with you and mentioned that he needed to make plays to make this roster. nope. I follow the Chargers pretty closely and they are looking at him to be a Turner like player in the future. They drafted him with a 4th this year, he's had a real nice camp and is a tremendous worker. They have no other back on the roster for the future (I don't think Sproles is in SD next year). I don't know what the announcers said but it would be a big shocker if he didn't make the 53 man roster.I don't think he'd make it to the taxi squad...Bloom and Cecil have been very high on Gartrell, but of course for 2010 or 2011. They also use Hester as a full back, so that can be justified. They could cut Bennett with the option to re-sign him later without nervously waiting for him to go through waivers. Can't say the same about Johnson. I know I'd be surprised to see Johnson cut.Banger's right in that the Chargers like Gartell, but the numbers game makes it a tough call. Can the Bolts keep LT, Sproles, Hester, Bennett, Johnson, and Tolbert? Tolbert and Johnson both have to play special teams in this scenario.
At this point, I think Bennett is a lock to make the roster and Gartrell is an underdog.he'll definitely be on the roster. If you follow the Chargers that closely, than you probably also understand that this year is almost a make or break. Don't they have a ridiculous # of guys coming up for new contracts? Rivers, Merriman, Sproles, Jackson, and more? Do you think they are going to make roster decisions with this concept in mind? I think they'll pick the 53 that give them the best chance to win this yearBanger said:nope. I follow the Chargers pretty closely and they are looking at him to be a Turner like player in the future. Was just going to post the same. Johnson hasn't shown much in the two games so far, while Bennett's looked strong. Johnson's auditioning to take over from LaDainian when he's done, and I'm not seeing anything in Johnson that makes me think he can do that. I think he'll be gone and they'll give it another shot in the draft next year.I think I would have drafted a surer bet 4th rounder then. He's running with 3rd string O-linemen too. That would be a big bruised ego of the front office if they let him go this year.Maurile Tremblay said:At this point, I think Bennett is a lock to make the roster and Gartrell is an underdog.Banger said:he'll definitely be on the roster. I dunno about that. 4th round guys get cut all the time. You think that's going to be a big bruised ego? Wait untill you see what happens with Craig "Bust" Davis - dropping Johnson will be small potatoes in comparison. The Chargers don't have roster space for a ton of projects right now. Tomlinson, Sproles, Hester are locks. I think Tolbert makes the team. That leaves Bennett and Johnson. Bennett has outperformed Johnson (who is running against 3rd stringers as well as behind them) - he's even made plays on special teams. Johnson is the last of 3 4th round picks. Of the rookies English, Vasquez, Vaughn Martin and Ellison are locks to make the team IMO. That doesn't leave a lot of space for other rookies/FA's, and they've got some guys at other positions who are playing very well that are on the bubble like Charlie Martin, James Holt, Nwagbuo, Spillman, etc. I don't think the Chargers are going to sweat it if they have to cut Johnson loose and try again next year, there's little to nothing invested in him. I think 3rd stringers from years past like Buckley and Gross looked better and they got cut loose too for one reason or another.I don't want to offend any Johnson "homers" but unless he shows something in these next preseason games I don't see him being rostered.I think I would have drafted a surer bet 4th rounder then. If he's costing that much let them have him and when his value nose dives come September/October consider pouncing. He isn't the answer this season, but he could be something next season. I'll be interested to see if the Bolts keep Bennett and try to slip Gartrell through waivers or if they hold onto him and cut the old speed back.Gabbo88 said:In my online auction pool a lot of guys seem to be bidding him up he s up to like 10 percent of your salary cap, who is this dude, I know he s a charger back up , but am I missing out on something?
I liked the look they gave toward the end of the game Saturday with Tolbert at FB and Hester at TB. They could really punish some people running out the clock with that. Hester looked pretty good with the ball too.I think it is going to come down to four tailbacks and one fullback, or three tailbacks and two fullbacks. In other words, it's between Johnson and Tolbert. And so far, I think Tolbert has looked better.
I don't think Bennett and Tolbert are costing the Chargers much.On the other hand, let's look at contract moreso than performance. If you're talking about a 4th RB, a 4th round rookie contract is very easy to keep. About as cheap as they come and for a couple years usually. Now if they've got big contracts coming up, does it make more sense to keep the cheapest one?
player has to be waived, then clear waivers, to go on practice squad. It's not just assigning him to it.Banger said:nope. when you get into the depth of a position, whether or not they play ST is often a deciding factor. Do these two? Yeah, Gartrell Johnson is a pound-the-ball-up-the-middle type of rusher, but Hester looks better in that role than Johnson so far.I liked the look they gave toward the end of the game Saturday with Tolbert at FB and Hester at TB. I'm sure Bennett has been. Not sure about the other two - I haven't seen them do anything noteworthy on ST so far this preseason, while Bennett has.when you get into the depth of a position, whether or not they play ST is often a deciding factor.
