Gartrell Johnson waived (1 Viewer)

Per Rotoworld:

Chargers waived RB Gartrell Johnson.

It's not a good sign for Johnson that he got the boot over undrafted rookie S C.J. Spillman. The Bolts will hope to re-sign him to the practice squad. Johnson, the team's fourth-round pick in April, got a $400K signing bonus.

Odd timing. Maybe they waited for others to sign waived backs in hoping to sneak him on the practice squad. Since nearly all other teams have played their 1st game and the salaries are guaranteed they may be mote reluctant to add Johnson to their 53 man roster.

If so smart move.

I'm a little surprised by this. I thought he was a nice sleeper and he showed some flashes in the preseason.

I think there's a decent chance someone else will pick him up, but this doesn't bode well.

There are several teams who could use a physical north-south runner:

Texans

Jaguars

Packers

Chiefs

Eagles

Bears

Lions

Seahawks

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get a shot somewhere.

I don't understand the rotoworld blurb. Spillman was already on the roster, they cut Johnson to bring DE Andre Coleman off the practice squad:

Chargers sign Coleman

Posted 43 minutes ago

The Chargers have signed defensive end Andre Coleman to the active roster. To make room for Coleman on the roster, the team waived rookie running back Gartrell Johnson.

Coleman (6-3, 287), who has been on the team’s practice squad, will be eligible to play in tonight’s ESPN Monday Night Football season opener against the Raiders. He wears No. 78. Coleman spent the 2007 and ’08 seasons on the team’s practice squad and has yet to appear in a regular season game. Johnson was a fourth-round choice by the Chargers in this year’s NFL Draft out of Colorado State.
I take it to mean Cesaire probably isn't ready to go tonight. I wasn't impressed with Johnson this preseason. Of the 6 RBs in consideration for the roster he did the least for me. Stock up for Hester and Bennett as the mop up guys I guess.

I doubt he'll clear waivers. It'd be nice to have him on the practice squad, but somebody will snap him up.

I didn't think he was impressive during the preseason. Michael Bennett and Jacob Hester were both better. But Johnson should land on an NFL roster somewhere.

Steelers came to mind first for me.

I think we fantasy geeks overvalue RBs compared to the front offices. I was of this very opinion of Kory Sheets when the Niners cut him, but he slid through waivers and is now on the SF PS without a problem.

Wonder if the Giants take him. Danny Ware has a dislocated elbow and Andre Brown is on IR.
This is what I was thinking too...Kinda of a hardnosed runner ala Jacobs...
Nice call:Giants claim Chargers RB off waivers: The Giants added a running back today, but it wasn't the one that was expected.

Rather than promote Allen Patrick from the practice squad, the Giants claimed Gartrell Johnson off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. The 5-11, 218-pound Johnson was the Chargers' fourth-round draft pick out of Miami. He is considered a powerful inside runner who was could be good in short yardage.

Johnson is out of Colorado St.

It was confirmed they tried out Booker monday or tuesday. Supposedly TJ Duckett too, though the articles I've read weren't able to confirm Duckett being at the tryout.
