Gartrell Johnson (1 Viewer)

Had a lot of hype after being drafted by San Diego last year, knowing what SD's RB situation might look like going into 2010 (they need one). But, SD cut him and NYG picked him up (much worse situation with probably 3 RBs ahead of him).

Is he on anyone's dynasty radar? I know very little about him.

I would'a loved him in SD next season. Not really sure what they were thinking. Being low on that Giants depth chart though, he might as well be lost in the desert.

I drafted him in a rookie draft and if he was still on the Chargers I would be very excited about his chances. Now I don't think there is much going on.

What's ahead of him? Jacobs, and Bradshaw are both injury riddled, and Danny Ware is an RFA now.

I think the smart move is to hold onto this guy for an impact in 2011......hopefully you have the room on your roster.

You answered your own question: three guys are ahead of him. And don't forget about that other Giants RB who got injured last year whose name escapes me. They have more RBs than most teams have offensive linemen. But I'm sure you can pick him up AFTER next season to hold him for 2011 if you want. He won't be on anyone's fantasy roster.EDIT: Andre Brown, that's the guy.

There's an outside chance of him becoming the next Derrick Ward. At the same time, it's a little bit troubling that SD cut him and NY barely played him (even with all their RB injuries). I like his skill set. I just think he's a step slow for the pro game.

The Chargers cut him because he didn't show much in his preseason carries. I watched all their preseason games and was unimpressed with him. I don't think he'll be much more than a 3rd or 4th string NFL RB. Not worth rostering for FF purposes.

I'd go as far to say "two steps".

I like Johnson. I think he could really do well as a short yardage back. He is really buried in NY though and I'm not sure I see him making an impact this year. I would roster him if your team is desperate for RB's, but any decent championship caliber team can safely stay away.

If you don't need to make roster cuts now, you wait. I like Bradshaw, but both he and Jacobs (and A BRown) are all recovering from injuries and surgery. Who knows how that will play out.

bob Papas was on the Network and he gushed about Andre Brown only and nothing was said about Gartrell

I'd let Gartrell sit on my dynasty roster if I could(deep roster). Coughlin likes him and if he's out of NYG due to a numbers crunch, some team will scoop up a RB who practices with enthusiasm.

Not for nothing but I saw Gartrell play vs UNLV a couple years ago- in town on business- and he ripped them for 200 yds. He's always been on my radar. In fact he will be my LPOD pick this year (Last Pick Of the Draft). Probably won't amount to anything but... That's my plan.

A friend of mine from work is a big CSU and Bronco's fan. When I asked him about Johnson after he was drafted by the Chargers he was unimpressed. "Too slow" he said. When I tried to hype him a bit he wouldn't come off his original college game day impression; too slow.

A. Brown says he's physically healthy and running full speed. It was asked in the comments for the above article "What RBs have come back from that injury" Edgar Bennett did as a Bear but was a shadow of his old self. It was likely the end of Joe Montgomery's career, and there was a lot of hope for him as a Giant.
I would think age would have something to do with this also. Bennett was nearing end of career when he went to the Bears. Almost like saying a guy like Thomas Jones would be done now if he did it. Of course he would be since he was on downhill of career. Add in medicine is much better today but I still think youth changes things and am very encouraged from everything I am reading on Andre Brown.

Montgomery and Bennett were years ago or millions of surgeries to advance medicine in that time. I'm not sure that's so relevant. Wish I knew more about what advancements have been made, if any.

My understanding is that Ware was tendered, so he will be in camp competing with the rest.

Brown is recovering, but seriously, let's say he does recover, is he really going to make a complete recovery in just one year? Usually a complete recovery from a serious surgery takes more than one year.

As long as Johnson is on the roster he has an outside shot too.

But in the end, I predict that Bradshaw will be the lead back and Jacobs will be used in short yardage situations and to spell Bradshaw, similar to how Tiki and Jacobs worked at the end of Tiki's career. Unless those two do not recover from their own injuries well, I don't think the other three will be signficant fantasy players in 2010.

 This is my (hopeful) take as well.

no, he has to sign it still and other teams can make offers. It's a huge step, no doubt, but there's still another step to be made. I heard from a couple excellent Gmen sources that Ware had issues with Coughlin as the season closed. I have not followed up on it though.
