Sheffield has put up some decent numbers playing for 7 teams at this point and some people might be surprised by his stat line. I don't think he's ever really been thought of as one of the game's uber talented players, and I'm wondering what people think about his HOF chances.

He just tied Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 21st on the all-time HR list today. I think if he plays out his current three year contract and is hitting like he is this year, he's a shoe-in.

Absolute lock.

He's .297/.398/.526, will end up with over 500 home runs and has a career 145 OPS+.

Yea he's a pain in the ### a lot, but he's one hell of a player.

Assuming he gets elected (which he should) what team does he represent? He's easily the greatest mercenary in professional sports.
I think of Marlins first because of the WS. Then Yankees. I'm sure George will lobby hard to get him in as a Yankee.
I think he'd go in as a Marlin, then a Dodger. He had seven of his nine best seasons with those two teams. Definitely not the Yankees.

Comparing numbers across eras (e.g., "He just passed...") doesn't compute, anymore. Especially for the juicers.

He'll get 3000 hits no problem. Guy is a hitting machine. Yanks were crazy to get rid of him. There season may have well been different if they had kept him. He would have solidified the lineup instead of the constant lineup changes we see now. Jeter, Sheff then Arod would have been a constant. He's a difference maker. Guy can roll out of bed and hit. Stud. HOF for sure. Guy mashed in Florida and Comerica park.

They did pretty well without him last year. :lmao:

I think a lot of live-ball/steroid-era sluggers are in for a rude awakening if they think they'll be waltzing into the hall with the same numbers that did the job in years past. I like Sheffield; I hope he makes it. But he's not there yet.

Too soon to call but he is in a great place with that awesome lineup. Too bad the Tigers will find a way to screw it all up come post season. :-)

I do not believe Gary Sheffield should be in the Hall of Fame. He has been a decent player. I don't think he is a good person though. I think he probably used steroids too, and anyone who used steroids should not be in the Hall of Fame I don't think.

This is Kige Ramsey for YouTube Sports.

I really hate the guy, but if his stats are there he will get in. If he plays at his current level for a couple more years his stats will be there, so it will be hard to deny him entrance. The only way he doesn't get in is if he is found guilty of using steriods, but I doubt that will happen. I don't want him to go in as a Yankee, though. I don't want him to have anything to do with the Yankees in any way ever again.

Not surprised that the board's resident steroid apologist would have this reaction. But, seriously, are you really going to argue with the fact that the numbers that one got you into the HOF are no longer applicable? The 500/3000 rules simply don't apply anymore as mortal locks. No matter how deep your head is in the sand on this, you can't deny that the standards have changed.

I don't see how he DOESN'T get into the HOF. 2500 hits, 500 HRs, 1500+ RBI for now.......has an outside shot at 3000 hits.......

He probably has a better shot if he retires right now (less competition come voting day). If he hangs on a few years to pad the stats he'll be competing with the likes of Bonds, Frank Thomas, Bagwell, maybe even Griffey.
