General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

It's starting to annoy me a bit that there are only like 5 voice actors in the whole game. I'll start talking to someone, hear the voice and think "where did I meet this guy before and what did I have to do" only to realize that I've never met the guy before but it's the same male voice actor. Again.

Yup... bugs me. It wouldn't even be expensive... you could get fan boys lining up to do it for free.

As for the other comment, if she dies at someone else's hand, she will respawn?? I figured dead was dead. I wonder how many battles I may have unecessarily re-fought because I didn't want to lose my pack mule?
I think the way it works is that if your follower goes down to 0 health, they kneel down and rest or whatever and recover. If you do the damage that takes them down to 0, though, they don't. They also don't if they take some massive hit of damage that puts them down to -50 or -100 or something. So a big hit from a dragon or giant can kill your follower as well. And then once they're dead, they're dead.
When they get to 0 they kneel down. If they take any damage after that, from anywhere, they'll die. The nice thing is that monsters will stop targeting them. So they only way they can take damage is if you hit them, if there's an area effect attack (like dragon breath) or if you put them in between you and a monster (then the monster targets you but the attack hits the follower).

Or how about how several different voice actors say the same lines? (*see my last post*)They could afford to pay these people money and reserved the dataspace to save their lines, but they couldn't bother with writing 1 new effing sentence for them? Really?

It's one of those things you just have to have a sense of humor about (hence the "arrow in the knee" meme). Oblivion was even worse than this -- everywhere you went, you constantly overheard different NPCs having the exact same conversation about mudcrabs. But you're right that it wouldn't be that tough to triple the number of voice actors and write 3-4 times as much random dialog.

I would have done more lines but I took an arrow to the knee.

So I have a small side quest where I have to go get this jewel thing appraised by some guy in Riften (I think). So I go and he keeps telling me to leave. The dude sounds like he doesn't like me for some reason. I keep trying to talk to him and he keeps acting like a putz. I got mad and tried to kill him but he didn't die. Whats the deal there?

You have to join the Thieves Guild to get him to help. Annoying, right?

I guess that wasn't a fine day (even though I was around).

I tried and got lost in a cave that had a bar in it and still don't know what to do. It was like a dead end.

They actually did do a real effort at it this time. There's over 70 voice actors for the game and there is actually a pretty lengthy list of possible dialog options for guards depending on what achievements you've done. But go through it for 150 hours and it is going to get old and repetitive.ETA: Wow.

Bethesda have told OPM that Skyrim will feature over 60,000 lines of voiced dialogue.
The Wiki lists 73 lines of guard dialog.
Yes, Skyrim is much better than Oblivion in this respect. And through a "normal" playthrough, the dialog probably stays pretty fresh. it's like how Classic Rock radio can have a 1,000 song rotation, but listen long enough and it'll seem like they play "We don't get fooled again" again and again.

Yeah, take it down to Vex in the bar in the ratways.

Has the Ps3 version been fixed?

My kid got this for Christmas so I may just borrow his instead of shelling out $$ for the PC version

70 voice actors? Really? I must have just had some crazy luck or something because in one 3 hour setting I ran into 3 different guys that all had the same voice as Belethor.

I have the PS3 version. I've finished all six major quest lines (main quest, thieves guild, dark brotherhood, mages college, companions, civil war) along with all the daedric quests. 12 MB save file, level 53 or 54. I haven't encountered any noteworthy technical problems at all. My game has frozen up 3-4 times, but honestly lots of games would have frozen once or twice after this much play so that's not that big a deal. I've never had any of the lag or other issues that some people have complained about.

Whats the most amount of people/dogs you can have accompany you at once?
1 person, 1 animal
Is there a downside to stealing a horse? I came across one at a bandit camp that was... recently abandoned and had the option to "steal" it, but didn't want to be accused of being a horse thief and rounded up like it was a western.
I stole one and as soon as I got off it, it split.
This. I've never gotten in trouble for snagging an unattended horse, but as soon as you jump off, it'll wander away.
Weird. I've only stolen one (from a bandit camp where all the bandits were already dead). This was early in the game, level 15 or so, and I left it outside of Whiterun. At level 60-something now, that dumb horse is still standing at the front entrance doing nothing.

ReallyAlthough some, like Max Von Sydow, I imagine only play one role as their voice is so recognizable. So maybe 40-50 voice actors for the hundreds/thousands of NPCs that are in the game. It is going to get repetitive, no matter what. But they really did try.
Oh it's much better than Oblivion and 100X better than any other video game I've played. I just like making fun of it. Good laughs.

Congrats. I've heard three in the last hour. No shtick.
Level 61. I don't think I've heard them say it yet.
Wow. I've heard very often.I wish there was a counter/limit to some of these comments. I literally LOLd the first time I heard "Looking for my husband? Check the Jarl's backside." But I've heard it so often I avoid her even if I have to run the long way around a building.

I was beginning to think she was indestructible. I mean I have seen her take shot after shot from dragons and we walk away fine. How did you get her killed?
Area magic spells (fireball) will do her in pretty quick.
Also any spells with lingering damage if she's already low.

Yeah, I think I heard that the first time I walked into Whiterun. Maybe level 5?The sweet roll line still get's me. :lmao:

Playing my 2nd character and the drinking game is very different. I think I messed it up the first play through because I did that one, bought a house, acquired Lydia and got married all jumbled together so I got very confused on what I was doing for which quest - but there were a lot of wedding rings and houseguests going on. I think if you bump into an NPC that several steps along the quest you can skip some of it.

BTW, has anyone helped Senna clean up the temple? I tried but no matter how much a picked up she wasn't satisfied - ended up paying for damages again.

I did it without a hitch. In fact, I remember thinking "all of that #####ing from you and all there was to pick up were 3 or 4 things? <_< "

On another note, am I the only one who seems incapable of seeing wolves before they are biting my shirt? I really, really need ED-E in this game.

A lot of the random dialogue is triggered based on your stats. It's possible the arrow in the knee line gets said frequently to people with archery as one of their highest combat stats for instance. Archery is by far my highest non-magic combat stat (50 while the others are 20 or below) and I hear it all the time.

That's the Thieves Guild's bar.You should have met a guy in town who wants you to help him discredit a merchant, planting on a ring on him while he distracts everyone. Once you've done it, he tells you to meet him in the bar you're talking about. Once you have, talk to him again and he gives you a quest to go collect money from 3 people.Once you finish that, return and talk to him. Get led into an alternate area of the cave to talk to the leader and get inducted into the Thieve's Guild. When you're done, go back to the bar and talk to Vex and she'll appraise it for you.

I think a lot of my trouble is that Lydia is such a beast I'm not having to shoot as much as I was before. She tends to just bull her way into places and kill people while I'm sneaking around and trying to set up my shot. I like the extra protection she gives, but she's taking all my fun.
Just tell Lydia to stay home.Archery is kinda slow-leveling. I use it on most dungeon crawls where there's a few guys and I have it up to maybe 55 or so. By comparison, my Destruction (my default damage-dealer) is about 83, my Restoration is about 63, and my Sneak is at 95 or so. But you definitely get credit/experience for sneak-bowing an enemy. Just keep using it, and keep Lydia out of ####, and it'll eventually keep moving up. The game has a pretty nice balance of how fast to level skills if you don't spam/grind them out on something.
Yeah, same thing in Oblivion where Archery and Restoration both seem like the two skills that are really slow to level. That's where I always used to put my training sessions.Now... I kind of wish all the other skills leveled as slowly. I'm level 55 and feel like my character is so powerful I'm just going to wipe out anything I come up against with a challenge. Finally hitting 100 Enchanting again was a big part of that.Improving my character is a big part of the fun in these games for me, so now I don't want to do the quests because I'm just doing them to tick them off the list, not to improve. Really can't wait to be able to edit the leveling system.

This is probably the most useful quest to do early on. I was lucky enough to stumble on it with my first character when I was like level 15, and the item you win from it saved me more times than R2 did Solo and the Wookie.

To be honest, it's actually pretty annoying/disappointing when you get it appraised. You should do it, but be prepared to be irritated.

I went heavy into archery early and it's been my primary attack method for the whole game. Don't know why people won't share their knee problems with me. :sadbanana:

Probably a silly question but, are skill trees always one directional? I am going up the left side of the blacksmithing skill tree. I got all the way through Glass with only Dragon to go. Once I get Dragon, I am wondering, will I be able to "keep going right" and grab Daedric? I'm assuming not, but hey, I can hope.

confirmed one directional only. I was in the same boat, I wound up spending the 4(?) perks to get daedric on the right side of smithing after I I had the leftside ladder completed up to dragon.

Finally got to play the two sides of my character (charming assassin) in one town tonight. Let's see, resolve romantic dilemma (ah love) and now off to my contract killing.

Already starting to get a hang of this sneaking/sniping thing. Had to load a save 45 minutes back because I hit a dead end unknowingly. I like the favorite thing, but to swap in and out of weapon setups Gears style would be so easy to implement. This will eventually really start to piss me off.

Just got this game for Xmas for my PS3.

Looks great but I am competely lost. I'm on Level 1 or 2 runing around like a lunatic. Killed some dude in a town and now the whole town is after me. They don't let me give up and bring me to jail - they hack away at me until I'm dead.

Reading this thread it seesm like most of you are dozens of hours into this - the language some of you use doesn't even make sense.

Other than "save often" does anyone have any tips for a beginner. So big it's confusing as hell. Which chararcter should I choose to use? I think I need to start from scratch - I messed up my first time through and it's still early to start from scratch.

Any sites out there that can help? Any tips on what I need to do?

Edit to add: What should I be buying? Selling? Should I just save my gold? Steal stuff? Pickpocket as much as I can?

Yeah once you kill an NPC they will be after you in that town. I would suggest starting over personally doesn't sound like you'll miss much. As far as what character to play that really depends on your style. This will give you lots of info Skyrim UESPWiki

Tips:1. Everything you do has consequences. Yes, you can kill/attack anyone and steal just about anything that isn't nailed down, but doing that will create a response from other people. Being level 2 and Kill on sight in a town probably isn't a good situation, and if it were me, I'd probably start over (or just revert to a previous save before you killed that guy). The penalties for getting caught stealing are less, but they're still enough that you should consider whether its worth it to steal something or not. 2. I guess the corrolary to 1 is that If nobody sees you do something, you can't get in trouble for doing it. If you're in an empty room and pick up something off a table, there's likely no reprecussions, but you might not get any benefit either. If you "steal" (it'll be marked in red as an option) something, you either need to be able to use it, or have a fence to sell it to. If you're just stealing some random tankard on a table, or a piece of cheese it probably isn't worth it.3. Talk to people. You never know who will give you an interesting little side quest that will take you to a new area, or just give you an excuse to explore some other part of the map.Others probably have better tips, as I'm a noob, but those are my quick tips.
