General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (3 Viewers)

Fallout 3 is still the high water mark for me as far as exploration, survival/scrounging, side missions, dark humor, cheesy humor, and overall "style".

New Vegas was a slight disappointment to me and I just didn't get into the western theme or the factions that much.

FO4 - the jury is still out. In many ways it tops FO3 so it's likely to turn into my fav over time.
I've revisted FO4 to play survival. No fast travel, so a lot more time walking, but I love it. More immersive and challenging, and a lot more fun.

I could see that.  I did get excited as I was scaling down a mountain by a waterfall today and saw some gold ore to be mined.  I think that was the first gold that I have come across.
Find Kolskegger Mine (or something like that) as long as you can fight through a handful of Forsworn there's boatloads of gold there. :moneybag:

I am glad to see (shouldn't be a surprise, as it's from Bethesda games too) that the weirdness and humor of Fallout is here too.  Last night I followed a talking dog to a den a vampires to be told to get an axe by a cocky statue.  I guess thanks to that dog, I also realized I was trying to get to the Greybeards the wrong way, so I climbed that mountain and talked to them last night too - I still have to complete the next part of that quest though..  I think I have been to most of the major holds that showed up on the map at the start.  Figured if I did that I would have more options buying and selling stuff.  Still haven't been to Riften and I think Dawnstar?   Also starting to notice the leveling.  Now more Bandit Outlaws running around, see better armor on enemies, and have been finding elven and dwarven weapons more.  Good times.  "limited' my playing to 2 hours last night.

If you didn't recognize his voice, the head Greybeard was Christopher Plummer.  Max von Sidow also voices a main plot character, and Joan Allen does Delphine in the Riverwood tavern. A few other voice actors you can spot are Claudia Christian (Ivanova from Babylon 5) and Michael Hogan (Saul from Battlestar Galactica)

I would suggest going to Riften early.  In fact, when I play a new character, after unlocking dragons in the main plot, one of the first things I do is go to Riften and play all the way through a major quest line there as the benefits are a big time saver throughout the game after.

Thieves Guild is there. As you progress it you unlock fences who you can sell any item type to including stolen items. If you finish the quest line and do enough of the extra minor quests (stealing individual items, etc), then those fences will be given a lot more money than regular merchants. Saves a lot of time selling stuff off to have those maxed out fences available to buy any kind of item and with extra cash on hand..

Oh, and if you haven't noticed, there's wagons outside of each town that you can pay a few coins to take you to major towns (including those you haven't visited before so can't fast travel to yet). Though I never use them, I prefer to have to walk there myself and explore along the way. Makes it feel like I earned it.

It's a good idea to play through the Graybeards quests until you get the whole Unrelenting Force shout (Foos Roh Derp) and Whirlwind Sprint.  Truth be told, shouts are fun to play with but I rarely used anything other than those two as they will get you out of pretty much any situation in a pinch.

I'm tempted to get this when it comes out for the XB1, but here's my concern.  The only Elder Scrolls game I ever tried was Morrowind on the original Xbox.  While I loved the idea of the game, I felt like I needed a notebook with me to help me keep track of everything I was currently doing, and seeing stuff I wanted to come back to and explore.  Throw in tips from people like "make sure you finish this quest to get this reward" and it seems overwhelming.

The menu system is very good at helping track quests IMO so you don't need a notebook.

Yep, it just keeps track of missions you have activated, and then you can turn on and off the markers that you don't want to do right away.

ETA: The only thing that I ever wrote down for Fallout (similar to this one) was where hard/expert doors and safes were so I could go back and loot them when my skill was up.  Not an issue here, as you can try any lock, but it just takes more patience.  I did manage to pick an expert lock the other night.

There have been a few voices that I could have sworn that I recognized, but just assumed I was wrong.

Riften was soon, but just haven't had to go that direction much in general, so I guess it ended up being toward the end.  Like I said, I think I only have a couple main ones to get to.  I have an idea what's in the spoiler for what I have picked up in dialogue, and I have a mission to get some booze for a Jarl anyway, so the trip will be soon.  I am sure as I get to these places I will know more on my next startup on where I want to get to first.  Some of these have been pretty disappointing when I get there, as there doesn't seem like much to trade or do there.  However, even if they are disappointing, I still love the look of them and the journey to get there.

And yeah - I appreciate the tip, but at least initially I want to get there on my own.  I do fast travel a bit after I find places, but like to explore initially.

Experiencing the greatness that is Skyrim for the first time because I just built a sick gaming PC, so I have Skyrim beautified to the gills. It still holds up nicely today and it's great to just explore.

I stuck to White run at first until there was just about nothing more I can do, then went on the long hike to Riften. I agree with Greg that Riften should be one of the first cities you explore.

This is where I am, and I don't think I played nearly as much as some folks here. Hard to fathom playing it again. Not sure how folks stay interested so long. To many other games I'd rather try out.
At least for me there are very few games like EOS so it has a ton of replay value. If it weren't for the fact my 360 is no longer hooked up anywhere I'd still be playing.

I am cheap, and don't like the "feel" of a lot of video games, so usually I only have 1-2 games I fall for and then play the hell out of for a long time.  Don't do any online stuff, so that limits my options, and usually don't like the 3rd person games, so again, limits it a lot.  Fallout series, Bioshock series, RE4, Civ IV, and GTA (still haven't played newest one) are probably the only games I have gotten into and played over the last decade + (not counting FIFA and Madden)  I have tried other stuff, but they didn't grab me enough to buy.   I still go back and fire up Fallout 3 and RE 4 from time to time.

I really might need to buy a house, as I still haven't earned one (probably because I am wandering and killing and not sticking to an area and clearing out missions).  Still always feel like I am at full capacity most of the time I am out wandering.  I think I have a carry capacity of 360 now, but usually head out of a town at about 310-320 or so.  My map is lit up with locations, but haven't explored a lot because I feel like I go somewhere, find some loot, but can't carry it back.  Last night I hit the road so I could get to the last 3 holds - Riften, Dawnstar, and the mining one I can't remember the name of.  I have no decent metals for smithing, so I am guessing I want to wander around the last two as they seem to be talking about their mining areas.  Just got the ability to make Elven gear, but not going to buy the ores and metals to make it, so I need to find me some mines.

Not sure if it's the areas I am at, or that I am leveling up, but got to kill 3 dragons last night.  Also bagged my first Mammoth and Giant!

I have never played any RE game but I have heard good things, at this point though there are so many that I don't know where I could reasonably jump into the series without missing out on too much background.  Is it worth going all the way back to the first one or is the game play going to be too clunky?

The one in Whiterun is easy to get, and cheap (just do a few missions for the Jarl). That's prettymuch everyone's first house.

I didn't mean t imply there is anything wrong with it. I was just talking me personally. I have played the heck out of many games. Any Elder Scrolls or Fallout games to name a few. But like old music that I used to play repeatedly until my ears bled, at some point I get tired of it and just have no desire to go back. And that's where I am out with Skyrim. I'd rather wait for the next installment so it is "fresh" than fire it back up and have the new one come out and be more "meh" because of it. To be honest, I almost wonder if they'll regret this re-release, depending on the release date of the new one. They may end up sort of numbing many folks to the new game.

I thought when I was poking around I saw someone claim that VI was still years away.

Could be. I don't follow that stuff to closely. If that's the case, they are likely fine. Then again, maybe they should have been putting that tie in to the new game rather than remastering the old one? Then maybe it wouldn't be years away?

Unless I'm forgetting, there aren't quests that just gift you a house normally. You can't 'earn' a house in the vanilla game. You earn the right to buy a house. So I'd just go ahead and buy it. By the end of the game you'll probably have bought all of them. Or go do the DLC stuff to make a house.

You can earn an individual room/bed/etc from factions like the Mage's Guild, Thieve's Guild, etc, plus in some cases nicer ones at the end of their quest line.

Also if you marry someone and they have a house, you can move in and I believe your stuff will be safe there as well.

Assassins gear?
The Dark Brotherhood. You can get started with them once you hear a rumor about a boy performing a dark ritual. Ask innkeepers about gossip and news is a good way to unlock such quests.

Curious if you played through the Mass Effect line.

Go to winter hold and do the quest line to become the arch age. You get a sweet penthouse.

stupid auto correct. What are we playing, sky rim?

Damn you guys.  Every time I think I'm out, you pull me back in.

Skyrim loaded and first set of mods added. New desktop I got back in November, able now to play with triple monitors with all settings on Ultra without any performance hiccups so far. Mods I'm running with to start:

  • Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch
  • SkyUI
  • Categorized Favorites Menu
  • Skyrim 2k HD texture pack
  • Glowing Ore veins
  • Quality World Map
  • Lockpick Pro
  • Ultimate Follower Overhaul
  • Valdacils Item Sorting
  • Weightless Ingredients
  • Marriage Dynamic Outfits
  • Guard Dialogue Overhaul
  • UNP Base body, Texture Replacer, Armor Replacer,
  • Stormcloak Chainmail and Tartan replacement
  • Enhanced Character Edit
  • SG Textures Renewal UNP
  • KS Hairdos Renewal
  • Eyes of Beauty
  • My own economy and perk edits I call MISER.
Also have the Famous Followers mod with the awesome looking Daenerys and Khal Drogo ready to go but haven't loaded it yet.

That SG Textures pack is probably the best I've seen for improving character appearance. Much more realistic looking faces.

LOL.  don't think I've even gone into an Inn.

Nope, I have never tried any of the Mass Effect games.

Yeah mass effect is a great series for the single player offline gamer. I just fired up my skyrim character again after a few months, and my guy is built kind of stupidly, but still dominates. One tip- plan your early points out to max whatever skill you want. When you're lvl 50 it takes a long time to get another point in the skill tree. I have stuff spread out over a few skills but the skills unlocked are planned out. I went to my house looking for my sneaky armor and couldn't find it. After playing for a couple hours I remembered I have a house in whiterun where I leveled my smithing. I have hoarded so much stuff. I have probably 400 potions. Not even exaggerating. Probably 5 matching sets of armor and a whole bunch of random armor. 30 or so weapons, a crapload of dragon bones and scales, ore, bars, jewels, all kinds of crap. So don't get too caught up with what to keep. Sell it, or upgrade it and sell it to level those skills if that interests you.

Now, when you and others say Level 50, does that mean overall level, or skill level (or both?).   ie - if I am at Level 20, but have 50 in archery is it going to be a lot harder to level up for archery, or are you just talking my overall level?

Both, it gets harder to level overall and within a skill as you go up.

For example, when I'm power leveling Smithing, I usually start mass making dwarven bows until its too hard to get to the next Smithing level and I move on to Ebony and eventually DragonBone bows.  Your overall skill scales as well so later in the game while you may have moved from 20 - 35 in Archery, you may have only gotten 25% further overall.

ETA: Also, when power leveling, there are times that you can link a few skills together while doing so.  Make the bows, sell them for ingots, make more bows, enchant them...

WTF is power leveling?
It varies from skill to skill but for example but, for example, sitting around creating hundreds of dwarven bows to level up Smithing.  Just a long focus on a particular skill or skills to improve them.

I'm a Skyrim hoarder so at some point, I just have so much of X lying around that I may as well try to quickly gain a bunch of levels in a skill.

Note: Enemies level with you until your overall level 50.

Dude, you should be leaving for adventures under 150 lbs. What the hell are you carrying, kettles?

I think my current character has gone legendary like 5 times in smithing. There are millions of gold worth of weapons in my chateau.

I love making super enchanted DragonBone weapons and decorating every single house with them once I no longer care about gold or buying other stuff.  At a certain point, it just doesn't matter to get the gold and is actually more fun for making your places look bad ###.  Same with armor.

I might have to fire this up tonight.  You guys are talking about it too much and I haven't played it since Dec/Jan or so.  And I certainly haven't played it since getting my 4k monitor.

Yeah I'm kind of here with you.  I probably put in 400+ hours into Skyrim on PC (using mods and all that) and a "remaster" just doesn't seem like anything to get geeked up about for me.  Oblivion is the only other Elder Scrolls game I have played so I am excited about the Skywind release (Morrowind using the Skyrim engine or something like that) and there is the Skyrim expansion that I am forgetting the name of that seems very cool.  But jumping back in with the base game I just can't see doing at this point.
