Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (4 Viewers)

Round 301.xx

Category: WLUV and KSEX-FM

Song: Birthday Sex

Artist: Jeremih

I'll never forget turning on the radio while living in New Haven, CT, and hearing this song. I almost choked on my own laughter when I figured out this was serious. Remember the old SNL R & B skits? Well, SNL never had it so good. I forget what this hit on the charts, but it was ubiquitous.
I would not recommend playing that for your girl.  Not unless her sense of humor is unusual.

That was hilarious.

#4 on the Hot 100. Also Jeremih had a very close call with COVID. Sounds like he is ok now but was very touch and go for awhile.

My first post on FBG in almost a year and a half. Who the what the holy hey. I. read. perused. scrolled. every. single. page. It took a couple weeks. Listening to stations as I did so. Carry on you crazy kids.
Welcome back, Chaos! Good to see you kicking. Hope things are good with you and hope things are good for your daughter. I remember your taste running more towards EDM these days because of her, if I'm not mistaken. Pull up a chair or join in. We've got some stuff to take care of.

@Chaos Commish  - any stations sticking out as you listen?

Also, feel free to drop 300 songs on us.. ;)
I put considerable effort into ignoring the past "played" century to not be that dad who tells his kid her music sucks in comparison. But she's been out the house three years now and this draft made me nostalgic. Love the semi-deep tracks on 60s, 70s. Similar picks peppered throughout other playlists. But It was Soul Town that really nailed me.

And just a bit of friendly advice, it may not be wise trying to domesticate chupacabras bro.

I don't think that's really an issue, but I'll try to steer clear, regardless. I'm thinking and can't help but note that there are definitely about three women I've dated seriously that would laugh and have unusual senses of humor.

Glad you're one of those that found it at least humorous.

Sadly, two of the girls that would have found it funny also found R. Kelly's music legitimately "hot," so there's no accounting for taste. I haven't gone back and asked what they think of the R. these days. Probably a discussion best avoided during trifles while catching up.

Of course it was funny.  No one was playing that for me.  It is way self-absorbed.  And I doubt he's really all that good at secks if he's thinking that much about himself.

Thanks, all good here. Fun to see all of you alive and kicking too. I listen to edm-ish stuff more than her these days. Woke up with a kitchen in need (isolation makes me a little pig since no one is stopping by). So this and similar was playing a little too loud for comfort as I cleaned house.

Higher than a mother-####er, dreaming of you as my lover
Flying like a streamer, thinking of new ways to do each other
I prefer youtube if you're picking her my old classical and jazz loving friend. She is a guilty pleasure.

Yet another thing in common, a fellow vapor has joined the draft. Well, not sure if I'm joining the draft or the peanut gallery. For grins I grew a plant indoors and learned to diy vape juice from the flower. I can post pics of weed porn. Growing it was more fun than the harvest.

Sorry but all our picks go into the Spotify playlists, that's that is the only source I use. It does lack the visuals though. Nice to hear about success with the plant and vape juice. Something I would like to do but I also know I am not so good at long projects like that. It's easier to just buy it. I am jealous of people who have that kind of mindset though. I am all for pictures.

Round 302.xx

Category: Strings And Things

Song: What's Going On

Artist: Marvin Gaye

The strings swell at about 1:10 into the song. If this song didn't make the overall playlist, we'd be remiss, though I know there are already three songs off of this album.

I was going to take this tune if it was still around when the political channel gets rolled again.
Nice. Yeah, I had two songs that had maybe more of a string influence in them, but one is really screamo punk/metal that probably wouldn't be great in the mix (I still reserve the right to use it if we get a bad category day) and the other was one that has been jammed in my head since the category got drafted. Marvin trumps both. It comes from what has become my favorite album ever, right up there in my forties like Pet Sounds was to my twenties. (My thirties are a hole filled with conviviality and drink, so disco-punk and hip hop ruled the roost, and picking one would be problematic, as they all factored in so heavily. )

Now that you have my bio...

Round 302

Summerpalooza

Fun trivia. Their name stands for Yesterday and Today. It was the album they were listening to when they got their first record deal and needed a name for the band.

Y&T- Summertime Girls
I remember Y & T and also did wonder what the heck the name was all about. Now you've answered it. But what the heck is that baby doing on the cover of Yesterday and Today? Please answer that one to move on to the Jeopardy! final round (you're in the red...).

All the babies have given head 🗣️

Soul Town is the best playlist.

Soul Town is the best playlist.
Yeah, I will be revisiting it a bit for sure. I even remembered several I hadn't thought of in years to add if I was playing along. 4 years of HS basketball on a half black team in the 70s, it was the playlist of many a bus ride. Such great times, such great music.

And man, your... well, it was a tough part of the thread to get through, and you have my deepest condolences. Hang in there.

Listening to Faction radio right now. I delved in from "SDE" on through "Gimme Some Truth" and I think it's damn good. That toots my own horn, of course, but I'm not even sure I dig one of my selections so it's really everyone else that picked some winners in that block of songs. I think "Queen Of Hearts" by ####ed Up and "A-OK" by Face To Face might be the standouts so far.

Shout out to krista4 for making the Beatles and their solo efforts absolutely work in the mix.

I didn't realize until pretty late into it that 90s punk was fair game. I assumed it stuff from the last 10ish years. So my picks ended up being a bit more emo/indie in some cases. Though as we discussed, the line is very blurry for some of those genres.

Same here.

As for nineties punk in general, if you asked me for a history of any genre and any era, that would be the era and genre at which I'd be most proficient. That's when I was young enough to travel just to buy records. Plus, there were breakthroughs in distribution, taste, and even some mainstream record stores stocking the stuff, etc. It was also the rise of Borders and Barnes and Noble, which were boons to the music seeker. The big box went a little more punk than their mall counterparts. So even if you couldn't travel about two hours to an independent record store, you could find something during down times that way. But mainly youth and travel were the main things to procuring a varied and deeper collection.

I wonder what Steve Albini thought of Mogwai. He recorded "My Father, My King" by them (I'm trying not to use it for Genrepalooza -- it's seventeen minutes long or so) and Mono and Mogwai travel in the same post-rock circles.
eMk4 said he can't recall anything specifically that Albini said about them, but they toured with Shellac a couple of times so he figures they're pals.

I know you love that album, and I think it was great pick. I didn't realize how much the strings were swirling in the background of the song until you picked it for the category. It fits well with the lyrics and their message.

Thanks for the shout out!  I need to listen to this mix.  Now that I'm finally listening, there are a squillion I want to hear.  I'll have a report on the several I checked out today on my long drive home.  Home, yay!!!  The only thing I love more than going on a trip is coming home at the end.

Oh that is such a good and another instance where it's fortunate the song made it this long because the fit is perfect
I had to do the ctrl F to see if it was taken yet. I've had my teeth cleaned twice, two second molars pulled (how weird), decorated for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day, and Easter, and turned another year older since we have been doing this draft.
