Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (7 Viewers)

What exactly is the Velvet channel?  I've drafted two songs for it, but I'm not sure if they fit. Is the channel centered around velvety vocals?
It's around strong vocals/vocalists for sure. I don't know if it's so specific as "velvety vocals" or if that's just the adjective they chose for the station.

Round 326.xx

Category: Velvet

Song: You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory

Artist: Ronnie Spector

Written by the great guttural guitar god/songwriter Johnny Thunders in the midst of a creative spurt, this version is sung by the ever-reliably competent Ronnie Spector, so it checks my boxes. A little string instrument in the background, and a little rock n' roll.

Always sounds to me like the riff to "Lonely Planet Boy," but hell, he wrote that, too, so...

Also, I expect some Shock G bonus action tonight.
I got to know Greg (Shock) through my good buddy Earl who played keyboards and sang backup vocals with Digital Underground.

I met Shock before Doowutchyalike came out.  He was a funny dude who enjoyed digging through the Jazz records in my crates.  Shock and I weren't real close but we took psychedelics and hung out at my place one time so there's that.

Greg lost a lot of his stuff including his beloved blue Pantera in the Oakland Hills fires of 1991. ditkaburgers was born shortly after that and Earl and I drifted apart.

I know they aren't from down south, but would Greta Van Fleet be in the mix for Radio Free Bird?   There was a band or two like them that I didn't pull the trigger on for the channel, but thought maybe the sound would fit in the mix.
Kings of Leon were drafted for it (I know because I was going to draft a Kings of Leon song right now if they weren't), so I think Greta Van Fleet would be fair game, though, sorry, still terrible.

Yeah, I was thinking specifically of you when I posted that.

Jones has a new album coming out tonight
cool. my bro and i have a guilty pleasure karoake place (restaurant) near a huge retirement community in the vegas area. i do delilah and ##### cat... for grins. i am way out of my depth doing tom, but he's baritoney bruh. and too fun. gimme three steps is also up if i am, so maybe some skynyrd? and the chorus on the free movement song is what wives are for. (also i think it's there but muted where i have heard it. no what i mean? like a lil help.)

Oh, I'm just catching up to the news. I took the Digital Underground track "Doowutchyalike" earlier in the draft. RIP, Shock G. Sorry, Eeph, even though you knew him very casually, that still must be sad. Reminds us -- maybe wistfully -- of old times and of our own mortality as we reach that age (for some of us, anyway).

Peace, everybody. Take care of yourselves.

Yeah, back where I lived in CT it was the same thing, at least last night, apparently. That's quite unlucky.

Here's a wintry mix song for you. Sounds very snowy, too.

Bonus Sleet, doowutchyalike for the playlist: The Walkmen - The Blizzard Of '96

Thought I'd add to Velvet since it's going away and a little skinny, but I looked at the playlist and still don't understand it.

325.k4  The Rolling Stone - Moonlight Mile  (Rolling Stones)

Is everyone being too "cool" with our picks and not getting the best stuff on some of these mixes?  I assumed this would have been there long ago.  Until Dr. O did his countdown, this was my favorite RS song.

326A.k4  Guided By Voices - 14 Cheerleader Coldfront  (coming in at 91 seconds)

6.5 seconds per cheerleader

326B.k4  Nick Drake - Harvest Breed  (a tight 95 seconds)

I suppose nominating Indie 1.0 (a real channel! - has to be at least 10 years old) as a replacement channel would be pushing my luck at this point...

Great bands and artists. I'll have to give the short songs a listen.

As for the Stones, I think I'd pick all the obvious ones. It's not that I'm too cool, it's that I'm trying to hit on a perfect song that otherwise might not show up, and knowing how much Dr. Octopus likes them, wanting to be up to snuff.

Sorta like you and The Beatles. One wants to pick a good and maybe lesser-known song. Not intimidated, just want it to be good.

That's my psychology, anyway. Plenty of great undrafted songs by the Stones.

I think there's just so many good songs for these artist specific ones. I was pretty surprised no one took "A Quick One..." for The Who before I did in the last round, but there's lots of great options.

Yeah, this all makes sense.  I know sometimes people don't want to draft something they've taken in another draft, either.  I look at some of these like, "if someone landed here from Mars and I wanted them to know about the Rolling Stones, what would I want them to hear?," rather than "what's a good mix for this highly knowledgeable group?"  I should probably go more in the latter direction.

I have the exact same push-pull, and depending on the day, I'll assuage either impulse. You're not alone. I also always think of people looking at the lists (they are collaborative and public on Spotify. If you do a lot of searches, you'll see a lot of personal and public lists. It is Facebook, after all.) and them going, "Who the heck are these people? Why these covers instead of the meat of the repetoire?" But then I have to remind myself to forget that and just pick away for the group and myself, mainly.

Long way of saying that I get what you're saying.

I still have I Write the Songs as a potential new channel but need a better definition than "songs written by non-singers"

I was looking at a couple songs by them for this category, they're probably on the Mt. Rushmore for it...?
Yeah, they have a lot that fit.

Well, I'm like that, too.  After you mentioned the Beatles channel, I realized I'd done mostly less "known" songs for my picks there to try to make it more interesting for the crew here.  So I have definitely not been consistent.  Generally I don't think about it much but then occasionally like Village Green or Moonlight Mile I just find myself surprised, but I shouldn't be come to think of it.

I was saving this for Strings and Things. 😄

Replacements for XMU2 and Velvet

  1. This is the End -- songs with great endings, codas, etc.
  2. Radio Alpha (Songs off debut albums)
  3. Moar Cowbell
  4. Chemistry 101 (Songs about drugs)
  5. Tripping Balls (Psychedelic tunes)
  6. Surf & Skate Shop (Surf music and songs about skateboards)
  7. Songs from Movies (non-instrumental except for Shaft)
  8. Harmonicalooza (songs featuring the harmonica)
  9. Shake Rattle & Roll (songs with any of those three words in the lyrics/title)
  10. Keyboard Warriors (Uber piano, organ, synth, celeste, harpsichord, accordian, etc.)
  11. Songs to Play at the End of the World
2d11, rolled once.

Roll set 1
Die rolls: 5, 8
Roll subtotal: 13
Roll total: 13

If a Martian came here they'd see the Political Forum and leave

Songs to Play at the End of the World :scared:
These two categories made me think how this is so awesome that we have such a deep supply of awesome channels and we can keep this draft going on indefinitely.

Tripping Balls (Psychedelic tunes)

Harmonicalooza (songs featuring the harmonica)
These made me think, okay maybe not so much...

Thanks to whoever updated the spreadsheet today. Tomorrow my mother comes to visit for the first time in more than a year so I had to get a lot of work done and then a lot of cleaning done.

Bonus Velvet to get it over two hours

Ledisi - In the Morning

Another acquaintance who passed through my life. She dated a friend of ours (and @ditkaburgers godfather I think) in the mid-90s before she left to pursue her music career in New York.

I don't have many memories of her other than she was very patient with our kids and said things like "Jeez Louise" which struck me as funny at the time.
