I feel like I've missed add some new potential candidates to the second circle of hell list but gosh darn it if I can remember what they were.

There are now two open slots for potential channels

Request for comment on the suggested categories

  • Jazz-Rock Fusion
  • 1800s on 18 (19th Century Music)
  • 1900s on 19 (Music from 1900-1949)
  • Featuring... (Songs with Guest Shots)
I'm not a huge fan of single artist channels but Bowie, Stevie and Neil Young would be good future candidates.
@Eephus There was some discussion of these around p. 151.

Dayton play-in games to advance to the round 20.

Jazz-Rock Fusion vs. 1800s on 18 (19th Century Music) followed by

1900s on 19 (Music from 1900-1949) vs. Featuring... (Songs with Guest Shots)

👄 Rolling Stones Radio 👄

LOL those are the ones on my list.  I thought there were some others.

If the proposed channels were brave and true, they will return.
Looks like Northern Fork suggested Lilith Fair, the theme of which should be obvious. He also had some suggestions for harder songs from women but those may be covered by Grrrrls Grrrls Grrrls (Women Who Rock).

Someone (KP?) suggested a channel of artists who aren't in the R&R HOF but should be, though I dunno how serious that was.

Thanks, I've made note of these.

They're open for comment.

I think that Lilith Fair w/r/t music is a lot like inviting a communist to give a free speech lecture.

Sarah McLachlan was Lilith Fair queen, and I don't think she's ever been selected in the music drafts that I've ever been a part of. I think Grrrls Grrrrls Grrrrls is quite enough.

Things I think, Part Two:

I also think Second Wave is running step-and-step with Lithium. It's redundant.

Radio Free Bird. Kick-### name. Short on songs and bands.

WLUV and KSEX? Three hours is a reach for anything remotely resembling a slow jam in these demographics. It might be a heart attack before three hours. Maybe just settle for an awkward fumble?

I guess other than that no qualms no jump out really. That's surprising, actually. The rest can be made a go of, IMHO.

One of my running house gags is to tell Alexa to play Sarah McLachlan when Louis is begging for Mrs. Eephus' food in the kitchen.

In three hours, I can finish and make it through a couple of REM cycles.

I was trying for another R&B-centric channel.  Based on my shuffles, The Groove and the Prince channel are mostly up tempo so there should be lots of ballads available.

It took me 166 rounds to figure out that PopRocks is basically modern Power Pop.
And that Green Day and The Killers are very well represented in the Power Pop Sirius XM Spotify playlist.

"Who says rock is dead? Check out this track by Green Day!"

"And here we have more proof that rock's not dead. More Green Day!"

"And the final nail in the coffin for those saying that rock is dead. Here's Green Day with..."

Well I toss and turn all night thinking of your ways of affection
Just to find out they're no different at all
Well, I throw away my past mistakes and contemplate my future
That's when I say...what the heck

Will it last forever?
You and I together
Hand in hand we run away (far away)
I'm in for nasty weather
So I'll take whatever you can give
That comes my way (my way)

My way yeah

So you want this thing to end?
I think the playlists that aren't fleshed out yet should still be eligible to be retired at the whim of the dice somehow. The Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads and all, regardless of song number or length of playlist. A little musical/critical Darwinism and/or fate, as it were.

I went to the first Lilith Fair with no idea what it was all about. A friend got free tickets and asked if I wanted to go. He said it was an all day festival with Sarah Mclachlan,The Pretenders,Natalie Merchant and like 20 other bands so I said hell yeah! The crowd was at least 90% female and I'm pretty sure we were the only straight guys there. We went up on the hill to smoke a joint and as we crowd watched noticed there were chicks making out all over the place. We ended up hanging out and partying with a group of black lesbians who were pretty much the only people of color there. Some of our friends still give us #### about it but we had a great time and it was one of my fav concerts I've been to..

Fantastic 1-2 punch of  Queensryche's I Don't Believe in Love and Whitesnake's Still of the Night in my earholes just now.

I figured that Hair Nation would be all stuff I've heard before, but then Junkyard and Cats in Boots was thrown at me.
I had to look up who picked Junkyard after pretty much sussing out who it was. Brian Baker, formerly of Minor Threat, went on to play in a band heavily devoted to drikin'. I think Baker was voted Flipside's "####### Of The Year" one year, and seemed pretty proud of it in a press junket for Junkyard.

Drinkin...drinkin' my blooze again

I had the cassette back when. My hardcore friends hated, I mean hated it.

Last time out in the Genrepalooza hair metal category, Eephus got us with Jetboy, SF glam metal stalwarts of 1988, named after the New York Dolls song from '73 and featuring Sam Yaffa of Hanoi Rocks.

*chef's kiss*

Round 167.xx

Category: Hair Nation

Artist: L.A. Guns

Song: One More Reason

How could you have a hair metal category that nearly forgets Tracii Guns, the other former half of the hair metal band that managed to transcend the genre because of sick musicianship and otherworldly songwriting, Guns N' Roses? Guns, before Roses's first album, had split with Axl due to what can only speculate were "differences," and went on to form a not nearly as successful but admirable band in L.A. Guns. Fronted by probably the more versatile and vocally talented yet less memorable Phil Lewis (a Brit) on vox, L.A. Guns cut a phenomenal debut hair metal album lost in the wake of Axl and the boys's Appetite, released months earlier.

People probably remember "The Ballad of Jayne" off of Cocked and Loaded, their sophomore album, meaning that they sort of broke it big. That was when balladry was huge, and every hair metal song was tripping over itself to appeal to the ever important female demographic. Twice as nice, sell more! Often songs of fractured love did the trick in that department. "Jayne" wasn't what I was particularly digging as a fourteen year-old. Lots of guys weren't. So L.A. Guns faded into the limelight like every shaky music industry outfit not from Seattle did when that all came about. The powerful demographic for balladry remained, however, and once we were done with the self-immolation and loathing coming out of the Pacific Northwest, bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday followed the old hair metal trick of being cute and non-threatening while screaming and wailing their eyes out over lost loves again.

I know some of their songs - Stars of course.
Sure. They were once considered a Smashing Pumpkins clone because they came full assault with guitars drenched in feedback and they were from the Midwest like the Pumpkins, but they were really a bit different. Pop-prog, maybe. I dunno. I dug it.
