Genrepalooza - Whoa oh ohhh, Listen to the music (5 Viewers)

I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me

I'm very happy with way this draft has worked out.  My main objective with the rules was to try to keep interest going through the later rounds.  That's always been a problem for me with mix drafts where I get locked in to a concept pretty early.  I don't know if it's been this way for others but I've made a bunch of recent picks of stuff that wasn't on my radar the first time the categories came around.

I've enjoyed the playlists I've listened to so far, especially the ones that are a little out of my usual wheelhouse like Old Metal and Trip Hop.
The playlists also give this draft staying power. I think we should have listening parties. i.e. next Friday at 10 sharp we all at the same time listen to riot grrrrl and we all comment in this thread, and obviously drink too for entertainment value.

I feel like posting They Might Be Giants lyrics, because on their own, without knowing John and John have written them, they take on a weirdly morbid import I haven't been able to wrap my head around for years. I think the lyrics are genius.

This one is from the greatest of all time, if that makes it easier...

What are we coming to
No room for me, no fun for you
I think about a world to come
Where the books were found by the Golden ones
Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned
What we came here for
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay
Still had to Google it.

You'll either recognize this or not from the first word...

Rosemary...
Heaven restores you in life
You're coming with me
Through the aging, the fearing, the strife
It's the smiling on the package
It's the faces in the sand
It's the thought that holds you upwards
Embracing me with two hands
Right will take you places
Yeah maybe to the beach
When your friends they do come crying
Tell them now your pleasure's set up on slow-release

So awesome, that band. I didn't get them until a decade too late, and by then they were touring in CT the same day as Modest Mouse.

I chose Modest Mouse in Wallingford, caught the after party show of Kurt Vile at Toad's after Interpol had played.

Good night in CT for once.

I think this may have been drafted here (not by me):

Sick to death of my dependence
Fighting food to find transcendence
Fighting to survive
More dead but more alive
Cigarettes and speed for living
Sleeping pills to feel forgiven
All that you contrive
And all that you're deprived
All the bourgeois social angels
Telling you you've got to change
Don't have any idea
They'll never see so clear

That would be awesome, but I have the feeling I would need another big bottle of booze by then.

Oh yeah, Northern Voice and JZilla came up the other day as possible FB friends I would know.
I don't think I'm FB friends with JZilla, but he's one of my longer term internet friends. Basically not FB friends with any of you, though I'm open to it if you want to see more pictures of my dogs

I will friend your ### then.  You will get pics of my cat trying to drink my ####in' gin.

I've been FB friends w/ Zilla for years but I never post anymore.  But now that I've hugged his girlfriend, everything is up in the air.

Weird what songs come up in my playlist. I have one that I was trying to get to 1000 songs but am at 912 now.  Forgot what years I haven't gotten too.  Anyway, this one just came up and I chuckled because it's actually a lyric that I love and song that I learned the lyrics to:

By the way I don't believe you're leaving
Cause me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it's that girl
And I think they're pieces of me you've never seen
Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well

Straight ahead is the doorway, see that lady that lady with the shopping cart
She keep a shottie cocked in the hallway
Damn she look pretty old Ghost, she work for Kevin, she 'bout seventy seven
She paid her dues when she smoked his brother in law at his bosses' wedding

Flew to Venezuela quickly when the big fed stepped in
3 o'clock, watch the kids, third floor, last door
You look paranoid that's why I can't juks with you
Why? Why you behind me leery?

Shakey Dog stutterin', when you got the bigger cooker on you
You is a crazy mother####er, small Hoodie dude
Hilarious move, you on some Curly, Moe, Larry ####
Straight parry ####, Krispy Kreme, cocaine, dead bodies, jail time you gon' carry it

Matter of fact, all the cash, I'm a carry it
Stash it in jelly and break it down at the Marriott
This is the spot, yo son your burner cocked?
These ####in' maricons on the couch watchin' Sanford and Son

Passin' they rum, fried plantains and rice
Big round onions on a T-bone steak, my stomach growling yo I want some
Hold on, somebody's comin', get behind me, knocked at the door
Act like you stickin' me up, put the joint to my face

The 3 or 4 genres at a time have focused discussion a bit.  Big drafts with lots of diverse categories have a tendency to disperse interest.  This format has kept us more or less on the same page or three on any given day.

You climb out the chimney
And meet me in the middle
The middle of the town
And since there's no one else around
We let our hair grow long
And forget all we used to know
Then our skin gets thicker
From living out in the snow

You change all the lead
Sleeping in my head
As the day grows dim
I hear you sing a golden hymn

Absolutely. but also, post draft listening parties

Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett are touring together in the fall but I'm already committed to so many fall concerts in Toronto (Japandroids, The National, New Pornographers, Alvvays, maybe Arcade Fire)... #firstworldproblems.

Ok sign #2 that the gin is really sinking in:

3 times now I have tried adjusting the sound on the outside of  my computer speakers.... while my earbuds are plugged in.  I guess it doesn't quite work that way.

My dear friend @Steve Tasker confirmed he was coming to Wayhome with me tonight. The rest of you are welcome to join. The lineup is kind of just okay (no, I don't know what a Flume is either), but fun times and in person FBG music draft? What could be better. Also your US money is worth like 1.5X here.

Another shout out to the FFA and these drafts.  This song came up on my playlist:

Walking up to me expecting
Walking up to me
Expecting words
It happens all the time

Present company accepted
Present company
Except the worst
It happens every night

It just reminded me of bands/songs that I definitely would not be listening to if not for these draft thingies that we do.  This is one of my favorite songs now, much to the annoyance of my child.

DON'T YOU WANT ME TO WAKE UP?

Get to the slot machine almost dead on arrival
Just hit me one more time with that live wire
Maybe they told you you were only a girl in a million
You say I've got no feelings
This is a good way to kill them

Select the control and then insert the token
You wanna throw me away but I'm not broken
You've got a lot to say, well I'm not joking
There are some words they don't allow to be spoken
Sometimes I almost feel just like a human being

Yeah, I really don't pay attention to lyrics.  This song just came up up on my playlist, and :oldunsure:

Back back way back I used to front like Angkor Wat
Mechanicsburg Anchorage and Dar es Salaam
While home in New York was champagne and disco
Tapes from L.A. slash San Francisco
But actually Oakland and not Alameda
Your girl was in Berkeley with her Communist reader
Mine was entombed within boombox and walkman
I was a hoarder but girl that was back then

Yeah, I guess when they stand out that like, we do pay attention. That's Vampire Weekend, right?

Any other day, I would call, you would say
"Baby, how's your day?"
But today, it ain't the same
Every other word is "uh-huh" "yeah" "ok"
Could it be that you are at the crib with another lady?
If you took it there, first of all, let me say
I am not the one to sit around, and be played
So prove yourself to me, if I'm the girl that you claim
Why don't you say the things that you said to me yesterday?

It's just interesting how people process art, especially music.  I am 99.7% about music/beat and the rest lyrics.  My wife is probably the opposite.  I rarely could tell you WTF a song is about or sing along to the lyrics.

Round 34.14  -  The House Is Rockin'  -  Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble  -  Drinking

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but those people sure seem to be having a good time.

And I have my category for the next of these drafts.

My favorite punk bands will not get selected by me this draft; most have been covered. I've already covered my favorite in previous drafts. I was going to pick the Dead Kennedys for this, but this band (FAT WRECK ALERT! So many indie bands and labels I haven't chosen that it feels wrong) hasn't been picked yet, so I'll go with them.

Genre: Punk/Hardcore

Artist: NOFX

Song: Linoleum
